I hope 16 is a very good year!

The World Championships of show jumping were on CBC this afternoon. It was absolutely amazing to watch the horses and riders tackle jumps as tall as 5'6" and more than 6' wide. I love watching the different jumping styles of the horses and the varied approaches of the riders. This competition is particularly interesting because each horse and rider pair jump several rounds before the top four go to the final round, where all four riders jump the same course four times, once on each horse. The riders only get to jump two jumps on each horse before they must go out into the competition ring to perform for the world title. The format really highlights the superiority of both the horses and riders.

This year the top four included three women (only one woman has ever won the event), and all four riders were completely clear until the final round, during which only one competitor was eliminated. So there was three-way jump-off for the championship. It looked like Beezie Madden (the final rider) was going to go through clear with a faster time when her horse knocked down a rail on the last jump!

I wish equestrian events were on more often. They are definitely my favorite sporting event to watch. :)

Apologies for being a bit slow in getting the results up.

saffronjan's pick of To Kill a Mockingbird has been read by the most people (14 out of 16), so she is the winner/loser, depending on how you look at it. larkvi's choice of A Wrinkle in Time, was the second most-read book, followed by The Great Gatsby, nominated by gleodream.

saffronjan, you should definitely read To Kill a Mockingbird this summer if you have the time. It's an amzing novel.

To give me a bit of distraction from major field reading, I bring you the newest version of Humiliation. This round is twentieth-century American literary classics, books generally read in high school or college English classes that, for some reason, you never read. I realize that "classic" is somewhat subjective, but I'll be fairly open to what is included in nominations.

I'll take nominations until Saturday morning, then put the poll up on Sunday afternoon.

[EDIT] I decided to limit it to American authors. I think that a smaller range makes for a better competition.

OK. Short review: there are a lot of problems with the show, but I greatly enjoyed it overall. It is a wonderful visual spectacle and extremely entertaining. It should not be billed as a musical, however, but as a play with music. I loved the music; it had a very particular feeling to it and I would buy the CD if it were available.


I'm sure I have more to say, but I can't think of it right now. I honestly really, really enjoyed myself. I went in with very low expectations and I threw the checklist of people, plot, etc. away before I went into the theater.
