10:18 pm - Cost of Living
Why in the world is cheese so expensive?

I'm thinking of taking a drive into Rochester to pick up massive bulk quantities of all kinds of regular household stuff and groceries. With the tanking USD, the exchange rate is too damn juicy.

If I was looking for an appliance like a high end stove or something, I could save hundreds of dollars. If I was looking for a car, I could save thousands or even tens of thousands depending on the model.

Getting a big five-bedroom mansion around the Rochester area costs less than one third the price of my 700 sq ft condo.

If only the gas wasn't over a dollar a litre...

12:07 am - New Plan
So I was looking at doing Costa Rica this year but it's looking more and more like that's outside my budget.

New Plan: Fly to Vancouver. Hit as many Asian restaurants as I can in a few days throughout Vancouver and Richmond. Then take an Alaskan cruise.

Gastronomy is always a good justification for travelling!

09:43 pm - Paternal Dog Takes On An Unusual Kid
"A paternal dog has adopted an abandoned baby goat as his surrogate child.

Billy the boxer has become the constant companion of the 12-day old kid called Lilly. He sleeps with the goat, licks her clean, and protects her from any dangers at Pennywell Farm wildlife centre at Buckfastleigh, near Totnes, Devon. "

11:22 pm - Car Pickup
So I go to the dealership today to pick up my Mazda6, and it turns out the bank made an error in the draft and did not put the proper stamps on it.

STAB

Tomorrow I will visit the bank again to give the manager a piece of my mind.

09:50 pm - US Election Coverage
I've been following the Democratic and Republican nomination process for some weeks now, and one thing puzzles me: If you look at each state's results, it is almost always the Democrats that have more female than male voters, and the Republicans who have more male than female voters. Weird.

08:16 pm - Car Financing: Most Insane Deal I've Seen
OK, so this is a $17.5K 2007 Ford Fusion. Off-lease. Almost new. Very low mileage.

Finance with $2000 down and $72/month for 320 months. WHO THE HELL WOULD WANT TO FINANCE A CAR FOR 26 YEARS?!

11:42 pm - Video From Japanese Nuclear Reactor Leak
This video is the centre of much controversy, as it was taken during a 1995 Nuclear Reactor leak in Japan, where 700 kg of molten sodium leaked from a cooling unit. Radiation was not leaked.

Is it just me, or is the background noise in this video extremely creepy, especially toward the end?

... maybe I get that feeling because it is so reminiscent to System Shock 2.

Dear Local Auto Body Shop:

Considering that it is your job to repair things so that they are like new, it does not engender confidence when the glass front door of your business has cracks, and you have repaired those cracks with packing tape.

12:05 am - UltraPortable Notebook Computers
I finding it amusing that as soon as the last MacWorld Keynote passed with the announcement of the Macbook Air, both Dell and Fujitsu started filling my inbox with adverts about their ultraportable offerings. (I'm on their mailing lists.) Apple sets the tone as usual.

Though I think the real benchmark in the industry is still the Asus Eee PC. The standard model is only $399 and it is plenty of computer for most people who need an ultraportable solution for light use and network access. This sort of appliance is what will drive the low end of the market. And it's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for.

I see this as a very bright and promising time in the ultraportable ultracompact PC market because so many other manufacturers are targetting the Eee PC and will need to embrace Linux to keep the price down. Competition will rise the solid state dynasty will truly begin. My dad was predicting this type of thing thirty years ago.

And I am practically salivating at the possibilities of ultra compact low cost low-end PCs that are exactly what I'm looking for.

Beautiful.

09:34 pm - Ah, The Song & Dance of Used Car Sales
So it's about time to sell off my old faithful Camry. At 304,000 km, it's showing its age, and I just spent $450 on it fixing a failing oxygen sensor in the engine. I do not relish the idea of putting so much money into a car that's really not worth very much money.

Knowing that I don't drive a lot and don't want to spend a lot, I'm considering abandoning my principles and getting a used Hyundai. Something with 4 years warranty left on it can be had for a comparatively low amount of money!

My dad and I went to this one Hyundai dealership to do the typical used car song&dance. Anyone who's done it knows that it's a veritable charade of treachery, backstabbing and false camaraderie.

We were eventually sitting in the office of the dealership manager: A brown guy who was a cross between a human & Jabba The Hutt. As soon as I realised this, I needed every ounce of my strength to prevent myself from snickering at the guy ... ("Bring me the trade-in and the Wookie!!")

We test-drove three cars and honestly I am 100% impressed by how the Sonata drives and handles. Very smooth. Very nice. Very quiet. Much improved compared to Hyundais from previous years. I like it.

Mr. Jabba tried all kinds of stories and tricks to get us to commit to buy on the spot; Logic, cajoling, the good salesman / bad salesman act, anger, sympathy and more. I had to squeeze him to get him to tell us he would give $2000 for the Camry, which is honestly a fair price.

Just as we were leaving, he walked out of the office...

Jabba: "I got a call from one of my wholesaler friends, and he'll offer you $2500 for your trade!"
Me: "So you didn't tell us this before?"
Jabba: "No, I had just left a message for him before and he phoned me back just a minute ago!"
Me: "So, $2500 you say ... "
Jabba: "No, it's actually $2600!"

And they say money doesn't fall from the sky ...

We got a good laugh all the way home. :D
