I wrote the script. Mal drew the pictures, inked them with a B-nib, and rendered them in beautiful watercolor and crayon. He's a talented fella.

Originally this was a submission for a speculative fiction site. We weren't too jazzed about the contract, but we finished it anyway, and I'm so glad we did. :)

EDIT: By the way, this man was the inspiration for Nola. He was evicted partway through the drawing process, and the structures in his yard were destroyed. Very sad. I used to jog by and see him welding away, and I still miss that.

Big thank-you to everyone who hopped over to Amazon and reviewed the book. I very much appreciate it!

Quick request

  • Aug. 4th, 2008 at 11:41 AM

I've been keeping an eye on the Chiggers Amazon page, and lately I've gotten a slew of very negative reviews from parents and teachers. Several of them bought the book unaware that it's a graphic novel, and most of them don't seem to understand how one reads a graphic novel in the first place. If you've read the book and you have a couple minutes to spare, could you please go review it here? I'm not asking you guys to go give me 5 stars and tell me how great I am, but I'd appreciate some comments from people who are, at least, familiar with comics. I just want is your honest opinion. Thank you!

Here's a profile of me from this week's Mountain Xpress, which is Asheville's weekly paper.

There's also a very brief mention of me (and Dash Shaw) in today's Wall Street Journal.

On Saturday I'll be signing at Spellbound Children's Bookshop in West Asheville from 1-4 PM. See you there!

P.S.
I am now twittering.

Drawn on a piece of special paper given to me by Chris Schweizer at HeroesCon. Verdict on the paper: Nice smooth surface, but it didn't take the ink too well. In a way it reminded me of that crazy plastic watercolor paper. Still, fun for an impromptu procrasti-sketch!

Camp Store *Finally* Online

  • Jun. 24th, 2008 at 9:54 AM

It's up! I'm sorry this took so long. Bandanas are $7 USD, including shipping & handling. Officially I'm only shipping to the US and Canada, but if you live abroad and you really, really want a bandana, e-mail me and we'll work something out.

I had a brief moment of terror this morning when I thought I was down to 14 bandanas and would have to reprint, but I found the rest in a box and . . . there are a lot more than 14. :)

Thank you thank you to everyone who came out to HeroesCon! We had a pretty good time down in Charlotte, as always.

This week I'm answering questions over at Barnes & Noble's Family Room message board. If you'd like to ask me something, click the link and fire away!

Out today

  • Jun. 17th, 2008 at 11:25 AM

Chiggers should now be available in bookstores. I'm not sure when comic stores will have copies, so if you know, please fill me in!

This Friday/Saturday/Sunday I'll be at HeroesCon in Charlotte, NC. I'll have be selling the same stuff as at MoCCA, including the Chiggers Value Pack.

I apologize for still not having bandanas available online. It'll happen this week. I promise.

EDIT: Chiggers should be in most comic stores tomorrow. :)

Win Skim!

  • Jun. 16th, 2008 at 10:47 AM

Jillian and Mariko Tamaki are running a Skim fanart giveaway contest similar to the Chiggers fanart contest from a couple weeks ago! Skim is one of my favorite comics of this year, and if you like my work I bet you'll love theirs. Details on [info]sumoandso's blog.

MoCCA was GREAT. I sold about 124 copies of Chiggers, which blew me completely away; I was only hoping to sell 60. The level of interest from all kinds of people was far beyond what I expected, and I appreciate everyone who stopped by to check out the book, whether or not she ended up buying it.

The bandanas sold remarkably well, too, and a bunch of people wore them around the con. It was like a (very well-behaved) gang. I'll have the online store up Wednesday or Thursday, when I've had a chance to recover. Don't worry, there are plenty left!

Highlights: Meeting my editor, Ginee Seo, and meeting Lynda Barry. Breakfast with Raina and Lucy. Actually, the whole thing was a giant highlight; even being evacuated onto the street in 100-degree weather was exciting. My stomach did happy flipflops all weekend and is still doing them now.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone. I can't wait to see you again next year!

See you at MoCCA!

Bandanas, Ready to Go!
Originally uploaded by hopelarson

Guys! I leave for NYC tomorrow, so here's my final pre-MoCCA post. I can finally announce my hot, hot con-exclusive Chiggers value-pack.

For $20, you will get:

- a hardcover copy of Chiggers, signed & sketched in,
- a bandana,
- and a minicomic of your choice.

:)

By the way, it looks like Chiggers is already available on Amazon.com.

Chiggers minisite

  • Jun. 3rd, 2008 at 10:09 AM

Presenting: the Chiggers minisite

Finally done! Some of it's pretty ghetto, but it should work fine in Firefox and Safari. It has some cosmetic issues in IE, but if you're still using IE you're a chump.

Well-intentioned design criticisms will not be taken kindly because this week is hellish and I don't have time to address anything but typos and misdirected links.

The "Camp Store" will go up next, since I'll be at MoCCA this weekend and unable to process orders.

Bandanas!

I'm very happy with how they turned out, even if they look huge on my tiny nubbin of a head. There's a picture of Abby and Shasta on one corner (check my Flickr for a picture), or you can fold it the other way and have just plus and minus signs.

We're between Paypal accounts right now (consequence of moving back to the US), but I'll be selling these online as soon as I'm able. $5 plus shipping.

Addendum

  • May. 29th, 2008 at 9:24 AM

The contest is still ongoing, and I'm floored by the submissions. Really. They're all incredible, and I have a request. I'm working on a Chiggers minisite that will be up next week, and I'd love to include these drawings in a fan art section. I'll be hosting them on my own server. If you're okay with that, can you please go comment on your piece with a copyright notice?

Just write "Art © 2008, Your Name." (Or, if you don't want to post your name, an e-mail address or "yournickname at http://yourwebsite.com" is okay, too.)

If you don't post a copyright, I won't share your art anywhere else.

I should have asked about this before, but I was only expecting 2 or 3 people to submit art! :D

Free books!!!

  • May. 28th, 2008 at 7:22 PM

Hello! I just got my complimentary copies of Chiggers in the mail, and the first five people to reply get a free paperback copy. Residents of the US & Canada only; shipping everywhere else is too pricey for me. Comment fast!!!

I'll also be giving away two lovely HARDCOVER books, but you have to work for those.

OPTION #1: Post an embarrassing camp story. Best story wins the book. (I'm flexible in my definition of camp. It can be a story about computer camp for all I care.)

OPTION #2: Post a piece of Chiggers fan art. Best drawing wins the book.

Color reference:

Shasta's on the left and Abby's on the right.

For the hardcover contest you have 24 hours, so go go go! Entries must be posted here, in my LJ, for consideration. Good luck!

Tokyopop's Manga Pilot Pact
(PDF format)

Download it and weep. This is the most screwed up, out-and-out evil contract I've ever seen, and I've seen some lousy contracts. Kids: Stay away from Tokyopop. There are other ways to get your work out there than selling it to a corporation that doesn't care about anything but $$$$$.

I'll try to post about this again, hopefully with photos, but here's the stuff I'll be selling at MoCCA this year:

- Hardcover copies of Chiggers
- Gray Horses
- Salamander Dream*
- Minicomics: Henry & Elizabeth and Chiggers: Séance
- Chiggers bandanas screenprinted in royal blue on red fabric
- Blank red bandanas that I will draw on with a fabric marker for $1
- Head-in-the-clouds ladies' t-shirts

Also, bowls of those freaking weird Wild Cherry M&Ms, because they're round and red like chiggers. I bought six bags of them at Target (they were on sale; wonder why), so if your blood sugar starts tanking in the middle of the con, make a bee-line for table C10.

Friday, the night before the con, I'll be taking part in a panel at NYU's Post Bang comics symposium: Comics and the Internet. It runs from 5:30 to 6:45. I'm getting off a plane and cabbing it over to the school quite soon before the panel starts, so please forgive me if I'm a couple minutes late. Immediately after the panel I'm running off to dinner with my agent, so I'llmiss both an interview with Lynda Barry (like a god to me) and the Jason (also like a god to me) exhibition at Rocketship. Sorrow! But at least I'm spared the agony of choosing which one to attend, since they're happening around the same time.

*The AdHouse Books edition of Salamander is about to go out of print. I'm working on getting it back into print with another publisher, but I'm not sure when that's going to happen, so get it while you can.
