Dark Knight swings past $500 million mark

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Batman's rich alter-ego Bruce Wayne has added half a billion dollars to his riches. "The Dark Knight" on Sunday became the second movie in Hollywood history to top $500 million at the domestic box office, raising its total to $502.4 million, according to estimates from distributor Warner Bros.

The film hit that mark in just over six weeks, half the time it took "Titanic," which reached $500 million in a little more than three months. "Titanic," the biggest modern blockbuster, remains No. 1 on the domestic charts with $600.8 million.

Despite its brisk pace, "The Dark Knight" is not expected to approach the total for "Titanic," which put up smaller numbers week after week but lingered at the top of the box office for months.

Dan Fellman, head of distribution at Warner Bros., said he expects "The Dark Knight" to finish at about $530 million, though it could reach $550 million if business persists as strongly as it has.

"I keep raising the number because it just keeps holding better than expected," Fellman said.

"The Dark Knight" will climb to about $505 million by Labor Day, the conclusion of Hollywood's busy summer season. That amounts to nearly one-eighth of Hollywood's overall summer revenue of $4.2 billion, which edges the previous summer record of $4.18 billion set last year, according to box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

Factoring in today's higher admission prices, "The Dark Knight" would need to take in about $900 million to match the number of tickets sold by "Titanic."

No. 2 Buckeyes win 43-0

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—It was as if a stadium full of more than 105,000 people was suddenly empty.

An eerie silence descended on Ohio Stadium when Ohio State’s Heisman Trophy prospect Chris “Beanie” Wells went down with a foot injury in the third quarter of the second-ranked Buckeyes’ 43-0 victory over Youngstown State on Saturday.

All of a sudden, what seemed like a nice tuneup for the mammoth showdown in two weeks against No. 3 Southern California seemed secondary.

“First and foremost, you really can’t replace Beanie,” wide receiver Brian Robiskie said.

The star tailback was hurt in the third quarter after taking a handoff from Todd Boeckman on first and goal at the Youngstown State 2. His feet slipped underneath him as he planted to make a cut, with the ball rolling free as he hit the turf.

I've never  understood why they went back to TURF from GRASS. Turf tears up your body and is very hard on it.

Wells was helped off the field, and later returned to the bench in the fourth quarter wearing a boot on his right foot.

“I may have rolled it or planted wrong a play or two before,” Wells said through Ohio State spokeswoman Shelly Poe. “Something just didn’t feel right. Then I think I felt a pop. But the X-rays are OK, so we’ll see how it feels in a day or two.”

Before the injury, Wells ran for 111 yards, including a 43-yard touchdown run. Boeckman tossed two touchdown passes and freshman quarterback phenom Terrelle Pryor looked solid in his college debut.

Wells is on most Heisman short lists, behind 2007 winner Tim Tebow of Florida. Wells rushed for 1,609 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago as a sophomore despite several nagging injuries and said earlier this week that this is the healthiest he has been going into a season in years.

If Wells is out, it would be a a huge blow for the Buckeyes, who host Ohio next week and play at No. 3 Southern California the following week.

Tressel declined to speculate if Wells would be available for either of those games

MARION - River Valley Local Schools is celebrating a series of firsts as it becomes the first Marion County school district to be designated as "excellent" by the Ohio Department of Education.

The district received the top ranking on Ohio Department of Education-released state school report cards released to the public on Tuesday, Aug. 26. River Valley High School also received the excellent designation while River Valley Middle School and Heritage and Liberty elementary schools earned the ranking of effective, making it the first time each building received the ranking of effective or above.

"Truly, this is a testament to your commitment, the quality learning experiences we offer, and an outcome that is worthy of the state's highest recognition," Superintendent Tom Shade stated in a letter sent to the district's employees.

"Our teachers and staff members work every day to focus on what matters most, student achievement," he said on Tuesday. "This rating reflects that philosophy, the hard work of our students and staff members, as well as the support of our entire community.

Downey Disses 'Dark Knight'

I think he's got BAT ENVY... LOL

The Hatfields and the McCoys. The Yankees and the Red Sox. Jennifer and Angelina. When it comes to a long-running feud, people choose their side and they defend it to the end. For comic book fanatics, it's always been the divide between the two major publishers -- Marvel and DC Comics. Devoted readers on both sides have argued for years over which was better: DC, with it's stable of classic heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman, or Marvel, which has always prided itself on more flawed characters like Spider-Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Leave it to Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. to stir up the hornet's nest again. After his movie opened huge in early May, it looked like Marvel's steel-plated superhero was destined to be the box office champ of the summer. Until, of course, The Dark Knight broke records with its gargantuan July debut, making DC's Caped Crusader the season's richest crimefighter.

In an interview with moviehole.net, Robert Downey Jr. shared his thoughts on the complex story of "The Dark Knight," and he left no doubt where his comic book loyalties lie:

"My whole thing is that I saw 'The Dark Knight'. I feel like I'm dumb because I feel like I don't get how many things that are so smart. It's like a Ferrari engine of storytelling and script writing and I'm like, 'That's not my idea of what I want to see in a movie.' I loved 'The Prestige' but didn't understand 'The Dark Knight'. Didn't get it, still can't tell you what happened in the movie, what happened to the character and in the end they need him to be a bad guy. I'm like, 'I get it. This is so high brow and so [expletive] smart, I clearly need a college education to understand this movie.' You know what? [Expletive] DC comics. That's all I have to say and that's where I'm really coming from." >>

Lance to be in DWTS

  • Aug. 25th, 2008 at 10:26 PM
do you dance mr darcy?
YAY!! I can't wait!!

from Lance's blog on myspace

Lance Bass, Kim Kardashian, Toni Braxton, Misty May-Treanor Lisa O'Connor/ZumaPress.com, Jeff Frank/ZumaPress.com, Joe Kohen/Getty Images, Bryan Bedder/Getty Images

The rumors were partly true: Lance Bass will be among the celeb hoofers on the forthcoming seventh season of Dancing With the Stars.

His pro partner, however—much to the chagrin of the blogging public, if not outspoken pro Karina Smirnoff—will be of the fairer persuasion.

Bass leads the roster of 13 for the latest installment of ABC's hot-stepping hit, a group of contestants cobbled together from the worlds of music, acting, reality TV and, in a bit of perfect timing, Olympic-caliber sport.

Here's the full list:

* Former 'N Syncer Lance Bass; pro partner Lacey Schwimmer (from So You Think You Can Dance
* Keeping Up With the Kardashians star and socialite/boutique owner Kim Kardashian; pro partner Mark Ballas
* Grammy winner Toni Braxton, who just cut her Vegas show short due to heart problems; pro partner Alec Mazo
* Retired NFL defensive lineman Warren Sapp; pro partner Kym Johnson
* Toast of Beijing and one-half of Team USA's two-time Olympic gold medalist beach volleyball team, Misty May-Treanor; pro partner Maksim Chmerkovskiy
* All My Children's resident daytime diva Susan Lucci; pro partner Tony Dovolani
* Celebrity chef Rocco DiSpirito; pro partner Karina Smirnoff
* Rock Star host and onetime E! personality Brooke Burke; pro partner Derek Hough
* Gold medalist sprinter for Team USA in the Athens and Sydney Olympics Maurice Greene; pro partner Cheryl Burke
* Up-and-coming Disney tween heartthrob and Hannah Montana costar Cody Linley; pro partner Julianne Hough
* Sitcom utility player Ted McGinley (Hope & Faith, Sports Night, Married…With Children); pro partner Inna Brayer
* Veteran Oscar-winning actress and recent Roast of Bob Saget scene-stealer Cloris Leachman; pro partner Corky Ballas
* Comedian Jeffrey Ross, this year's heir apparent to Adam Carolla's entertaining yet uncoordinated mantle; pro partner Edyta Sliwinska

Kardashian has already handicapped herself, calling in to Good Morning America today to confirm that she was rushed to a New York emergency room Sunday night after slicing her foot open on a broken mirror in her hotel room. But she will go on with the show.

Meanwhile, for those playing DWTS Trivial Pursuit: Linley is set to be the show's youngest contestant ever at age 18; Leachman is the oldest at 82.

Several familiar pro faces are returning for the new season, with Mark Ballas, who strutted his way to victory with Kristi Yamaguchi, back to defend his title with help from new partner Kardashian.

The rest of his hot young thing pro triumvirate, including Houghs Derek and Julianne, will also return, the latter somewhat surprisingly as rumors she would take a sabbatical from the show to focus on her recently launched country singing career had been making the rounds since last spring.

The most notable new addition on the pro side is Corky Ballas, who teams with Leachman. Ballas is the father of Mark and was the live-in dance coach for his son and the Houghs back in London.

The celebs met with their pro partners last week and have already begun a grueling practice schedule in anticipation of their three-night premiere, Sept. 22-24.

As with last season, two couples will be eliminated during the first week of competition. The Jonas Brothers and Jesse McCartney will perform on the first results show Sept. 24.

beijing
here is the link to the full story, I just pasted a little. I think they SHOULD look into it. They owe everyone an explaination for the documents that have seemed to be changing to accomadate the Chinese sport. Fishy if you ask me.

BEIJING (AP)—The International Olympic Committee said Friday it had asked gymnastics officials to investigate whether the Chinese women’s gymnastics team that won the gold medal had underage athletes, saying “more information has come to light.”

“We’ve asked the gymnastics federation to look into it further,” IOC spokeswoman Giselle Davies said. “If there is a question mark and we have a concern, which we do, we ask the governing body of any sport to look into it.”

The IOC, which also asked the Chinese gymnastics federation to investigate, would not give details on what new information prompted it to act now, three days after the gymnastics competition ended.

Messages for the International Gymnastics Federation were not immediately returned.

Chinese coach Lu Shanzhen told The Associated Press they gave the FIG new documents on Thursday to try to remove the doubts about He Kexin’s age, including an old passport, a residency card and her current ID card.

He said all these documents were issued by various departments of the Chinese government and that he felt there was nothing more that they could do to put peoples’ minds at ease.

Earlier this month, the AP found registration lists previously posted on the Web site of the General Administration of Sport of China that showed both He and Yang were too young to compete. He was born Jan. 1, 1994, according to the 2005, 2006 and 2007 registration lists. Yang was born Aug. 26, 1993, according to the 2004, 2005 and 2006 registration lists; in the 2007 registration list, however, her birthday has changed to Aug. 26, 1992.

If the FIG would find evidence supporting the questions that the gymnasts are underage, it could affect four of China’s medals. In addition to the team gold and He’s gold on bars, Yang won bronzes in the all-around and uneven bars.

“We played fair at this Olympic Games,” Liukin’s father and coach, Valeri, said after they arrived back in the United States. “… If somebody cheated, shame on them.”

LOS ANGELES - LeRoi Moore, the versatile saxophonist whose signature staccato fused jazz and funk overtones onto the eclectic sound of the Dave Matthews Band, died Tuesday of complications from injuries he suffered in an all-terrain vehicle accident, the band said. He was 46.
Moore died at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was admitted with complications that arose weeks after the June 30 wreck, according to a statement on the band's Web site. It did not specify what led to his death, and nursing supervisor Galina Shinder said the hospital could not release details.
On June 30, Moore crashed his ATV on his farm outside Charlottesville, Va., but was discharged and returned to his Los Angeles home to begin physical therapy. Complications forced him back to the hospital on July 17, the band said.
The band went on with its show Tuesday night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where lead singer Dave Matthews dedicated the entire show to Moore.
"It's always easier to leave than be left," Matthews told the crowd, according to Ambrosia Healy, the band's publicist. "We appreciate you all being here."

It's a shame :(

I thought this was pretty cool. This guy can RUN, omg. WOW

BEIJING (AP)—Usain Bolt of Jamaica broke the world record by winning the 200 meters in 19.30 seconds Wednesday night, becoming the first man since Carl Lewis in 1984 to sweep the 100 and 200 gold medals at an Olympics.

Bolt is the first man ever to break the world marks in both sprints at an Olympics. Not even Lewis or Jesse Owens managed that.

Showing what he can do when he runs at full speed all the way through the finish—something he hadn’t done yet in the Beijing Games—Bolt eclipsed the old record of 19.32 seconds set by Michael Johnson in Atlanta in 1996.

Bolt was an astonishing 0.52 seconds ahead of silver medalist Churandy Martina of Netherlands Antilles.

Shawn Crawford of the United States, the defending Olympic champion, was third after teammate Wallace Spearmon was disqualified for running out his lane. The U.S. protested the ruling.

The performance marked Bolt as one of the breakthrough stars of these Summer Games, coming on the heels of his victory in the 100 Saturday night. He bettered his own world record in that race by winning in 9.69 seconds—despite slowing down over the final 20 meters to showboat.

Matilda Ledger's gift

I just about cried. This is just so sweet!!!

The late Heath Ledger's daughter Matilda was spotted skipping along the streets of NYC yesterday with her mom Michelle Williams in the cutest pink sundress. Every time I see a photo of the 2-year-old I can't believe how much she looks like her dad. He definitely lives on through her.

As most of you probably know, Heath was filming Terry Gilliam's "The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus" at the time of his death. Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell stepped in to complete Heath's role, playing different versions of his character "Tim."

When the three actors learned that Ledger's will had not been updated to include his daughter, the generous trio decided to donate all the money they earned from the film to little Matilda!

It's good to know that there are a few nice guys in Hollywood.

I've edited this post, because I found this really sweet article from here that talks about Heath, at the time he died in January. It made me cry and I wanted to share it.

Pride & Prejudice

darcy dawn
I've been reading Jane's books, and watching the movie versions. Dad has a copy of the old black and white one from TCM. I've rented and watched the A&E mini-series version from the library, and of course the 2005 version with Keira Knightly and Matthew Macfadyen (see icon) in it. So, I got to playing around with my PSP/Corel today and made this:

I omitted 1 line for space reason, but here's what it says. It's one of my favorite passages from the book.

Mr. Darcy: You must know... surely, you must know it was all for you. You are too generous to trifle with me. I believe you spoke with my aunt last night, and it has taught me to hope as I'd scarcely allowed myself before. If your feelings are still what they were last April, tell me so at once. My affections and wishes have not changed, but one word from you will silence me forever. If, however, your feelings have changed, I will have to tell you: you have bewitched me, body and soul, and I love, I love, I love you. I never wish to be parted from you from this day on.
I also made some icons too. I don't think they are as good as the ones I've seen on the
[info]matt__macfadyen community I joined, but oh well. Maybe I'll get better!

Dear Fans,

Thank you for your loyalty and support of the Cincinnati Reds.
You are extremely vital to the success of the Reds, and it is
important we share with you the thinking behind our recent
personnel decisions.

Since taking ownership of this franchise, we have aggressively
tried to improve our Major League roster for the purpose of
restoring championship baseball to Cincinnati. We have sought
and signed proven players. We have extended the contracts of
select current players. We added Dusty Baker, a proven winning
manager. And, we have capitalized on our burgeoning younger
players like Joey Votto, Jay Bruce and Johnny Cueto.

We had high expectations for the 2008 season. Unfortunately the
team has not played up to our expectations and we have sustained
injuries to key players within our starting lineup and rotation.

We opted to trade Ken Griffey Jr. and Adam Dunn at this time
because we believe it provided the best outcome for the long-
term success of the organization. By executing these inevitable
changes now, we secured more players as part of our focus
towards building a deeper, stronger inventory of young talent.

We are pleased that the trades allow Griffey and Dunn the
opportunity to play for teams in tight division races. Both Ken
and Adam made significant contributions to the Reds and we are
extremely proud and grateful they wore the Reds uniform.

While the run production generated by these two veterans will
not be quickly replaced, we chose to endure the short-term
ramifications for the sake of building a strong, competitive
team for 2009 and many seasons to come.

The vast majority of our 50 draft picks were signed, culminating
last week with first-rounder Yonder Alonso and a pair of
talented pitchers. Our expanded scouting operations also signed
Juan Duran from the Dominican Republic and Yorman Rodriguez from
Venezuela, who are arguably the best amateur free agent position
players from their respective countries.

As we near September, we will continue to provide valuable
playing time to our young players and new acquisitions who we
feel can become significant contributors at the Major League
level. We ask your continued trust and patience as we build the
roster that will get us back on top. We appreciate your support
and look forward to seeing you at the ballpark.

Sincerely,

Bob Castellini

I can’t stop smiling. I’m so excited.”

Chinese Gymnastics... funny...

  • Aug. 15th, 2008 at 5:06 PM
beijing
Someone is OBVIOUSLY lying and it's not America.

BEIJING – For a long time, elements of the Chinese government itself thought women’s gymnast He Kexin was born Jan. 1, 1994, which would make her 14 and too young to compete in these Summer Olympics.

Whether it was repeated mentions in the government-controlled media – including a new one uncovered Friday by the Associated Press – or on official gymnastic meet registration forms and websites, He was “this little girl” and a “new star.”

As recently as December 2007, in provincial gymnastics meets and news reports that covered it, she was a 13-year-old prodigy, too young for the 16-year-old Olympic age limit for gymnastics.

Then, suddenly, she wasn’t.

Earlier this year China produced her passport that claimed she was born Jan. 1, 1992, making her old enough to perform a brilliant uneven bar routine and push China to the women’s all around gold medal.

The Chinese either got it wrong in 2007 or wrong in 2008. Considering 2000 Chinese bronze medalist Yang Yun later admitted on state television she was 14 that year, the reported ages of He Kexin and at least two of her teammates have aroused suspicion in nearly everyone except the powers that be – the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Women's gymnastics tonight

Ok.. how in the world can Nastia and Shawn get low scores like this? What crap! Nastia had a near perfect vault to led off tonight and she doesn't even get a 16!!!!

Can the YOUNG, under 12 China girl (Yang Yilin) get ANY MORE sparkly, pink, kiddie barrets in her hair??? Come on!! OK that has NOTHING to do with the competition, but come on. lol.

Bella is right with me on this. He thinks the scoring is crap (my word not his, lol) Nastia's score on the un-even bars, he thought should also have been higher.

What the barnacle? These judges aren't taking deductions for balance checks on China. Jiang Yuyuan gets a 15.425 on beam, with at least 4 balance checks (auto deductions, supposedly) and she mounted all wrong.. yeah... judges must be paid off here.

And Yang Yilin gets a higher score, and the announcers said it was too high for her, I think it was 15.756. The announcers were shocked.

Yay! Nastia got a well deserved 16.125 on her balance beam. Finally, a good score.

Now to floor exercise...

Nastia gets a 15.525 on floor routine.  She's surprised us all and win over Shawn. Wow. Nastia and Shawn go Gold, and Silver, Yang Yilin of China gets Bronze, for the all around champions.

American currently has a total of 43 medals, with China on our heels, with 36 medals.

America has a total of 14 Golds, 11 Silver, and 17 Bronze medals.

Ryan Lochte wins Gold in the 200 meter backstroke, while Aaron Peirsol wins the Silver in the same event.

Michael Phelps wins his 6th Gold Medal of the Olympics, in the 200 meter individual medley. He beat out fellow American competitor, Ryan Lochte, who came in 3rd, wining the Bronze. Michael also broke a world record time for this event. He swam it in 1:54.23.

Natalie Coughlin wins Bronze in the 100 meter freestyle.

American currently has a total of 41 medals, with China on our heels, with 35 medals.
