The unwillingness of 2k5's admin to curb Inquisitra and Sunder have cost the game one of the damned finest facheads it's seen in years.
Also, having lightning take out internet, phone, and cable on a night that involved RP that actually required my character's presence is highly vexing. At least I finished coloring Keeper's alt mode and laid down Fury's palette. Still not happy about missing the scene though. u_u

Glofish arrived, although one died! The others are settling in well, though. I'm happy. The aquarium looks quite nice, I'm thrilled to death (still) with it.
Been doing some drawing again, and digital coloring. So far, it's art for characters on 2k5. The first is Keeper, an Autobot OC based on Monsterbots! He transforms into a fu (foo?) dog. Loved the idea, and decided to use him to practice digital coloring on. I think I am dwelling on the coloring too much, I don't think the image will get a good attention/time invested ratio. ;) But the creator, aka Vitacus, loves it. He's made several good ideas over the past years on multiple MUSHes, so... why the heck not?
Art! Lookit.

Keeper, OC Autobot Monsterbot by *Heatherbeast on deviantART
Quote: "Stand against the storm. Make it bow and cower. This is living."
Keeper is a natural born security guard who has never aspired to be anything different. He is used to standing guard and being alone for very long periods of time. So much so that his social skills are severely lacking. Once he was a Walking-Tank back on Cybertron, he recently underwent an experimental rebuild to take on a 'Monsterbot' altmode, becoming a fearsome horned Guardian Dog. In this monsterous mode, Keeper is capable of breathing extremely hot flames that can melt down a car to a puddle of liquid metal. His large claws can tunnel through mountains and, combined with his horns and massive jaws, can tear up and devour just about anything. Unless needed in a fight, Keeper tends to remain in his relatively less intimidating robot mode.

Fury, Decepticon OC Inks by *Heatherbeast on deviantART
Also, Fury!
Decepticon Seeker. TINY RAGE.
Quote: "I'll show you just how much size matters."
Profile: Fury is a parasite fighter, X-85 Goblin. In her robot mode, her armaments consist of arm-mounted machine guns, as well as flame throwers. In her plane mode, she's got her cannons and firebombs. She's one of the most vicious of the Decepticons, capable of anger entirely out of proportion to her size. With her thrust to mass ratio, she's extremely swift. She's also wordy, talkative, impatient, and loves charging into battle at the head of her comrades.

Oh gosh this thing is so amazing. :O
Pics!!
I'm currently at the house, waiting for a delivery of a mixed-color school ofgenetically engineered SCIENCE fish. More pics and gushing to come for sure. :)
I've done some searching on PubMed, and was very happy to learn that they're using EGFP based fluorescence in these animals, which means I do not have to IRRADIATE THEM WITH UV to get them to glow. For now, I have two full-spectrum bulbs (luckily the aqua hobby already makes these for corals and plants) in the mail that have a fantastic spectral peak in the blue light (420 nm, with smaller bell curve to 500 nm) range, so these guys will be blazing. Perhaps for Christmas I'll get a reef hood setup that can hold full-spectrum bulbs and actinic (blue light) bulbs for some deep blue nighttime aquarium action punctuated with red, yellow, and green traffic lights.
Eeeee they should be here by 3 pm at the latest. Eeeee. In the meantime, I need to write up my end of project summary for EPA and get this in manuscript format so my butt can get pub-lished again. Life is pretty sweet for me. Just need to shake this sinus headache. ;)

As those of you who are on my friends list know by now, Dan and I are no longer married. The divorce was finalized on the 23rd of June, and Dan has moved back to New Jersey. The parting was amicable (albeit tear-soaked). This marks the start of improved lives for both of us. So, no hate mail, okay? ;>
Turned 29 on the 27th (this past Friday). Forewent the male strippers for a pinata party. Microbiologists are entranced by FLOW. Can't blame them. XD Pics here!! Drunk scientists with whacking sticks! Go lookit. I'm so proud of that (destroyed) pinata. I can't even begin to say how much fun it was.
Also, this marks the second year in a row that
doom_bees has gotten me something of exceedingly fine taste -- ie, I already owned it. The Yukikaze model is still well received though, and I'm happy to make it 3 for 3 next year if you're willing to be sporting about it Mark, hah! :)
Had a dream come true in the form of a 70 gallon aquarium popping up in my dining room! How could this be?! ;) GalvEdTron from 2k5 is good people. And well... he really wasn't using it anyway, he claims! The accessories aren't cheap, either. C&P into a new window to see the WIP -- it's only a few hours old in this pic, be gentle! Plants and fish to be transferred later this week. http://wingsplatinum.tripod.com/aquariu m70.jpg After that, my tinfoil barbs should have room to roam. I will probably restock my hatchetfish and black neons, and then, cheese off conservative aquarists by firmly embracing the designer genetically engineered wonder of GloFish.
It's crazy late, and it's time to bid this very awesome weekend a fond farewell. Hope the rest of you guys had a good time.

Oh, Tuesday. Good times.
I'm not getting much use out of the seminars this time around, although the poster sessions more than made up for it. I feel like I've already gotten my moneys' worth out of the convention in terms of info and knowledge. There's a good poster about F. tularensis in amoeba, which is a definite area of interest to our own group because of the ramifications it has on drinking water disinfection. Also, found a poster about ethanol extraction of exopolysaccharide and how to measure the overall carbohydrate content of the collected samples. This is a good thing!(tm) because I will be able to quantify these characteristics to see if it does indeed correlate mucoid B. pseudomallei strains with tolerance to chlorine disinfection, instead of the current qualitative 'It's slimy, lookit this plate' description I have.
Lunch was had at the Barking Crab, complete with best clam chowdah in Boston. The calamari appetizer had red peppers as garnish, and man those really knocked my sinuses open in a way that no OTC medicine has ever accomplished. I loved it! That's it for my seafood this trip, I don't need anymore, thank you very much.
Apparently 'wandering for an hour before settling at a restaurant to eat' is going to be a ritual for us at this trip. :) I managed to rope Liz into eating some spicy foods (chicken curry for our roti kanai, and ginger chicken) at Penang after we found ourselves in Chinatown. The Cold Stone right beside the hotel where we're staying was closed when we got back, curse those stupid 10 pm 'seasonal' hours. Boooo. :<
Liz's labmates appear to have a lot planned for her today, she's increasing the time which she's going to be tagging along (read: dragged along) with them for things that are marginally relevant or interesting to her. Hmm! Looks like I will be venturing to the aquarium alone. With my horrible disposable cameras. ;.; I miss my digital camera, old as it is.
Think I'll close this out now. Off to go talk to vendors about swabs, ha ha.

Yesterday morning marked my official entry into the realm of 'taking travel for granted' when I showed up at 8:15 for an outgoing flight I /thought/ was at 9:45 am. Hmm! Look again, hawkeye! I think I nearly passed out when I saw the 'too late to check in baggage' message -- the flight was at 8:45 am! Oops. >.>
Got into the hotel and such fine, ahead of my two roommates, Liz and Kansas. The convention center is located in South End of Boston, while our hotel is in Back Bay -- the charter shuttle buses the convention has provided us with are 1.) at the mercy of ground street traffic, 2.) run infrequently, and 3.) are filled to capacity with 2-3 bus loads leftover by the time it pulls off! Liz and I used our MARTA legs and transit savvy to use the T, which winds up taking about the same/less time than if we were able to hypothetically board the overfilled bus. Hmmph!
Also, Boston appears to be a walkin' town. I approve! One of the local tour folks suggested it's 'a bit of a walk' to North End (Little Italy!). We passed the aquarium on the way, which had an external exhibit of their seals -- definitely a good way to rope in paying customers, which I will visit during one of the mornings or afternoons when there are no sessions of interest to me at the conference. But yeah, so it turns out 'a bit of a walk' is about... an hour? Goodness! :) Well I got my exercise for the day.
Still doing battle with my sinus congestion which never handles flying well. The cold I got over Memorial Day weekend has decided to crawl down into my lungs, where it has since (thanks to the dryness of the hotel room) died as well. I have material the consistency of hardened concrete all over my respiratory mucosa. Glee. Time to buy drugs.
Really looking forward to checking out posters related to my interests in microbiology, as well as work-related things. :) I've always had a curiosity about Bdellovibrio, and why yes, I do intend to ask each of the poster presenters: predatory or parasitic? :D :D :D I present my own research on Wednesday morning. Also on Wednesday: the commercial vendors are hosting "A Taste of Philly" in anticipation of 2009's ASM meeting in Philly. Guess what's gonna be there? TASTYKAKES OMG
Also, the ASM internet kiosk operators have wised up this year! No telnet or Java client access to MUSHes. :( I truly am in the land of serpents. *sniffle*
That's it for this installation of fractured stream of consciousness writing! Bye!

Maybe one of these days I'll start doing art again. I really want to try fingerpaints on other human beings in a primary color Fauvist detonation. Joe, aka Pyre, prodded me to download Blender 3D and also mailed down a manual/tutorial book. I have some awesome ideas in my head, and would love to make them a reality.
Sunburn from hell is finally fading, with 3rd layer peeling nearly two weeks after the fact. Left shoulder MIGHT go through a fourth layer. Right shoulder is definitely done. Sporting a delicious summer cold/sinus infection. Doing amazing things in the house now. It's nice to be able to have the windows open and fans running without the AC blasting the place into a dark ice cave.
Proud to have made a friend's 30th b-day a blast. Even if the scratch-made carrot cake wound up tasting more like spice cake. Ah well, at least there's always the cream cheese icing. :)
2k5 will be running a humanizing TP, the first in the 3 years I've played there! But the bulk of it will be while I am away. It starts May 31st, and will probably go for 1.5-2 weeks. I will be in Boston presenting my disinfection research at the General Meeting for the American Society of Microbiology, and then after that, bolting down to Williamson to spend the weekend with my sis and nephew to celebrate his 5th birthday. It'll be good times.
I made a tegaki E account, wherein a person draws/manually 'writes' their entries with a mouse. We'll see if I keep up with it. You can find it here: http://www.unowen.net/tegaki/uentries.p hp?u=21706

Sun poisoning is finally fading from my shoulders. Enjoyed my first locked-out-of-the-house experience last night. About to go do SCIENCE once my monochloramine levels stabilize. Will make pineapple upside down cake tonight.
Your Personality at 35,000 Says... |
![]() Deep down, you prefer spending time alone to spending time with others. You enjoy thinking more than talking. You are good with your place in the world. You are confident and comfortable with who you are. Your gift is having a good eye. You take amazing picture and have the natural talent for most visual arts. You are inspired by challenges. If something is hard to accomplish, you want to do it. Your life has a lot of ups and downs, but things generally end up being pretty positive. It's one big emotional roller coaster, that's for certain. |

Oh good god where to start?!
*faceplants*
Exhausted, pleased, and... yeah. I... actually didn't get to any of the panels, I was too busy running around with PEOPLE.
Thursday's plans for the Air Force museum had to be scrapped because Dot's (Longbomb/Melissa) flight got fubared in more ways than I ever care to imagine. 4 ticket reissues?! Yikes. ;.; Perhaps it's for the best, I am certain that things would have ended badly with MPs or security tasing me for refusing to let go of the landing gear of the Lancer they had on display there. NEXT TIME, GADGET, NEXT TIME!
Caught up with the folks from 2k5. Catechism, Switchblade, Sky Lynx, and Peacekeeper were barrels of fun. We played 'pass the Fachead' by getting GalvEdtron (and Fury!) on the phone. It was refreshing to be able to hang out with a decent group of MUSHers capable of carrying on conversations about things other than RP. They were comfortable enough to be around that they wound up being my default group to hang with.
Deadzone RPG people! I... don't RP there. But I know just about everyone on there through some other means, be it former 2k5 players, participants on deviantArt, etc. These fine female folks made up the bulk of the costumers this year. I even made up a story to go with all the awesome shots of Dinobot (Lunatron/Catechism) in her natural environment. You can check it out here!!! I kinda got this weird vibe that there was competition between these guys and another costuming 'group'... Maybe? I don't know, I was too busy getting snuggles. Becca and Ravyn and Tai and Luna were delicious, and the entire passel of us went to the Hofbrauhaus in Newport. Bodices, yay. Everyone tried something different with the appetizers, and even got into each other's entrees and desserts. I am AMAZED that no one gave each other any colds or flu. ;) Their dark lager was delicious, mild, comforting, with nary a whiff of bitter aftertaste. I had an entire liter, and it was GOOD. I also drew with an 08 Pigma Micron pen on their 'graffiti' table, which just had sloppy marker work on it from employees and customers. I went in theme for the whole royal court feel, and made an Imperial Eaglet crest, complete with crown, shield adorned with Decepticon sigil, and scepters clutched in talons. Thanks to Luna for providing me with the shot.
I... never caught up with them again. ._. Becca still has my gift, and I have art I still need to give her. Looks like we WILL have to mail each other after all. There was NOT enough time at that convention.
Allspark people were fun. Friday morning, we were able to have a breakfast at the Newport Aquarium, and then get early admission and special scientist presentation on the Gentoo and King penguins they have on display. The Newport Aquarium's shark touch pool was AMAZING; they had at least eight different species in there. I really enjoyed looking at the California Horned shark, although there was this little adorable leopard printed thing that I just wanted to stuff in my shirt and take home. ;> We got mugged by lorikeets! We had an epic time with shotglass checkers on Saturday night, and I proceeded to draw BW era Killtron. He is a DEATHSWAN. >:E Transformers: Animated figures were to be had at the local Wal-Marts. It was nice to be able to get these at retail, and as an early release. Lindsay, aka Draange, darted underwing a few times to evade amorous stalkers. Awww. She's much calmer this year, so if we do a girl room next year, I might invite her in again.
Got to speak with Casey, which was fun. This is the fella that won the IDW cover contest. You'll notice he uses the more modern aesthetic of minimal shading and hatching, as opposed to a lot of the heavily blacked in stuff that won in the first round of that contest, so I'm pleased. :) He's been busy with art for the Beast Wars sourcebook, I think, trying to get hired on by them. Keep your fingers crossed! I did finish my own art at 2 am Friday morning. The ladies at the table when I entered the art were pretty crabby, even though I got my entry in on time. If they wanted to stop early, they should have put '9 am to 11:50 am' for setup. Grr, grrr, I say. ~.~ The pic involved triplechangers acting like goofballs. It wound up looking muddier and more technically flawed than I'd care for, so that is likely why it did not place. Also, I don't think ANY of the people who won last year were selected this year. I wonder... ANYWAY...

There you go. :) The plane flights for ME were relatively uneventful. Got a bunch of aisle seats, and the skies were always hazy, so not much interesting going on there. I've really taken a liking to smaller regional commuter jets. You can feel EVERYTHING on the runway and sky. So, greater sensation, slightly more risk. Like lambskin to your latex condoms. Haw.
Later, folks. Please please go check out those links, you'll see some amazing things. I think I need to go sleep for a small eternity, now.

So much fun! Hauled GalvEdtron and his GF out to the 72nd annual Dogwood Festival in Atlanta. Probably haven't had this much fun since well... Avenue Q a few weeks ago!
I found a lovely plaque made from slate roof tile recovered from a demolished church originally constucted in the 1910's. Mounted on it is a copper plate, glazed with a bird of paradise (the orchid) drawn on it. Very similar to this, but in more subdued, almost achromatic tones. The artist, Richard Miree, also had some delicious mechanical and glass kinetic sculpture, and does a series of copper etched plates in a language of dance, so you can get him to make pretty cryptograms for you! Amazing stuff. Also took home some nice bonze and blue colored glass bead jewelry from Cynthia Stone. The design of the individual pieces is exquisite, with a coppery bronze finish on the top and bottom half of the sphere, and the glass a transparent sky blue where it was faceted in the center. Certainly a bit different than her earlier fare.
I wound up purchasing an ikebana styled dish in a blue-green glaze washed over a matte/coppery base from Vasileios Tsentas. There was a beautiful dichroic glass display as well, with beautiful blown jellyfish motifs in transluscent, glittery green in a slug of cobalt colored glass. Gorgeous, but all their vases were tall stand up types, definite marks for disasters in the house with cats. The ikebana's profile is much lower to the ground, and some sadistic side of me likes the idea of STABBING the plants down onto where they're supposed 'sprout' from. I'm sick, okay?
Got to introduce GalvEdtron to funnel cake, but alas, the vendors were out of fried gator. :(
The highlight of the festival had to be the chalk art area on the asphalt in front of the band stand. A couple stranger's toddlers (and Ed) helped out with drawing a blue Chinese dragon. Was able to wind it around the art already on the ground. The kids didn't do much other than smile and keep handing me chalk. Who was I to argue?! And Galv helped out with filling in color on the detail portions, like the mane, back scales, tail, etc. My pants are COVERED in blue, yellow, and orange chalk, hah! Certainly worked up a sweat baking myself on that asphalt, but it felt GOOD being able to make such huge, beautiful graceful curves with the chalk. I did not have my camera with me, but I think I caught a few pro photographers on the periphery of my vision, so if the pic pops up on local news, I'll link ya. We saw the Binders booth where you buy chalk for $2 a pack after the fact, so I just threw dollar bills at them. :) They were probably confused.
Good times!! How was your Sunday? :)

Whoooo.
Finally got my subject matter picked out. Hopefully I won't bite off more than I can chew!
Just over three weeks til the convention. Those of you on my friends list that are GOING and are of artistic bents, I highly encourage you to participate!! There's a large pool of talent out there, and what better way to join others in showing your love for the genre? Hmm?
Last year there were only about a dozen (or fewer!!!) entries in each category. C'mon, I know there's more of us out there than that. I would love to see you guys enter. There are modest prizes in the way of dealer room credit for the top three spots in each category, if that appeals to your competitive spirit.
The criteria for the entries is actually LAID out in the PDF, too, if you want to strut your stuff. Behold!!! -----> http://botcon.com/Botcon08/Contest%20Gu idelines%20BotCon%202008.pdf It's a good idea to call them in advance with your piece's dimensions so they know what to expect from us.
Hope to see you there! :>

Earth Hour is upon us, for those who can't quite manage a whole Earth Day or Earth Lifestyle. I understand that the idea is to send a very powerful message that the average consumer, when coupled with enough likeminded folks, can actually curb our coal-consuming electrical desires.
8 pm local time, TONIGHT TONIGHT, just... turn off all electrical appliances, lights, etc. that you don't need. For 1 hour!
What remains to be seen is how many people will stick to it. How many people actually powering down the non-essentials while they are at work/asleep would it take to make a meaningful impact on the electrical grid? Hmm. Still worth doing though, just to see. C'mon, satisfy your curiosity.

How do you feel about dinosaurs? What about Crabs? Bunnies? What are you thoughts on robots? Lasers?
Intrigued, are you? Then we have the game for you. A game about dinosaurs, crabs and bunnies. A game about robots and lasers.
It is a game where dinosaurs, crabs and bunnies transform into robots with lasers.
And they fight. In the jungle.
In the Beast Wars.

I came home yesterday, and the place was... gorgeous and cleaned! :O Holy crap, Dan, you've outdone yourself. Definitely going to help make sure that your hard work is for naught. :)
All the labwork came back normal, and the verdict was a bruised calf muscle. I'll be returning to the gym today, a week after the initial ordeal. Will probably stick to upper body workouts. Speaking of which... I've gained weight, but clothes are fitting better. I've gone down one size, thank Jesus. But damn. 222 lbs, even if that's from muscle gain, is embarrassing for a female. I don't care if she is 5'9".
Repliforce as portrayed on Megaman MUSH is a very similar archetype to the Autobots. So why oh why is the Greatest Army in History so beloved by me, while the Heroic Automatic Robots so reviled? I can't blame this on roleplaying playerbases or potrayals, as both have had their fair share of gems and turds. I just don't get it. WRYYYYYY!!!111??!?
ART ALERT: As Beamer says, a Seeker has to be batshit insane to cut off his wings. Post-Apocalyptic Earth, which is Post-Post-Apocalyptic Cybertron, I guess. And this is only the right-hand size of the drawing. Muah. Enjoy, folks.

So. Woke up this morning with probably the worst cramp I've ever had in my entire life in my left calf muscle. My diet's fine, haven't done any unusually hard physical activities out of my workout routine, but here I was at 4 AM howling and writhing in pain. Wake up around 8, it's still burning and sore, and no amount of massaging or hot soaking's helping. I can't get up stairs or inclines without MUCH pausing and upper-body assistance. I call out from work, and make an appointment to ensure there is no long-term damage.
I wound up being there for three hours! The doctor assessed it, and decided that yes, there's deep muscle bruising inside from the strength of the contractions. THEN she says that she wants a lab workup to make sure there was no clotting involved. Okay, off to the lab for a blood draw! Go downstairs to the lab. And... they want 5 vials. Not just for the D-dimer thrombosis indicator, but to check calcium and other levels. Hnn, okay... a bit nervous, I've been getting better about piercings and injections since I got turned into a pincushion when I first started at CDC. I've gotten a bit dizzy and faint before, and tell them I need an incline. However, I didn't expect, as the assistant was telling her supervisor when I came to, to 'go to heaven'. Apparently there was shaking involved with the fainting episode. They got 1 vial before I joined the official ranks of 'fainter'.
dot_cat says this happens in about ten percent of sticks, but... I wonder if that's an inflated statistic to make me feel better? *squint* I got carted off for observation, and eventually another phlebotemist came up, and got the other 4 vials, no problem. They'll call back with the results, eventually. Still painful, enough that I won't be doing any labwork for the next few days. @.@
PS: Heaven is black, tingly, rough-textured like fingerpads over multiple layers of latex painted on concrete cinderblocks flying dream.

The first part of this past weekend was fun. My labmates, husband, and I got to enjoy the Second Coming of Christ the opening day at Steak and Shake in Toco Hills. Talk about insanity -- this was the first of the food chain to open inside the Atlanta Perimeter. Everyone had to put their name on a list, wait 30 minutes, and of course enjoy the divinity of their chili, pepperjack melts, and of course the dark chocolate cookies and cream shake. Ooooh I'm so so bad. More gym and Pilates for me, if I'm to indulge again any time soon.
Speaking of Pilates -- I've stopped trying hyperextend my legs in an attempt to make the curves disappear from my legs, which has helped with me being able to hold the positions, and the instructor has complimented me on the amount of progress in my short, relatively spotty time in her class. I'm at the phase of my workout routine where I've started to gain weight back in muscle mass. Ugh! I'll never be 150 pounds ever again, there's just too much bus-catching and grocery store-hiking meat on my legs. Don't get me started on the chest. ~.~ Back's been giving me less trouble since I've started working out, with back strengthening and -ahem- pectoral support helping take the load off. I'm turning my body into its own corset, and rather like it.
Voting still isn't up yet for the first round of the IDW cover contest. Good news is that there seems to be better turnaround now for account activation. So far it looks like there will be 10 contestants in this first round. I'm starting to have a few doubts about the lack of hatching or texturing or shading I did with the inks. The style's a bit different than the comic industry standard, and I'm starting to wonder if the lack of black blocks is going to be a liability when it comes to voting. I should of thought of this last week. Between being put 'on hold' for the contest, and recoiling at the mess the house is in, I had keyed myself up to the point where drawing, role play, or soaking just wasn't cutting it. My hobbies had become albatrosses. Everything had me on edge, to the point where I have chewed both my forefingers' nails down to some very raw, painful quicks, yet not content 'til I moved on to chewing on some of my online friends. :/
Roadbuster/Pitchfork suggested going for a walk, but the weather wasn't good for it... and then he mentioned LEGOs. I think he was half joking about building the Hindenburg, but I saw his challenge, and raised him one Hindenburg /Disaster/. I think the part that impressed me the most was that he remembered the conversation from a few days ago where it was brought up that I owned a fair number of bricks. Just the fact that he remembered something that small meant a lot... I dunno. It was probably one of the most inspiring/validating parts of the weekend to see someone pay attention like that. So I made him a Hindenburg Disaster in three hours last night. It was a very different evening than the norm, and a break from trying to squeeze artistic blood from the very stone that represents my state of mind about drawing. I will take pictures this evening.
I DID also draw on Sunday and Monday, but that is part of a larger project, and related to MUSHing stuff. It may warrant its own entry, where I combine it with general nattering on 2k5's second wind. Back to calculating individual concentration*contact time values and working up stats for them.

Pleasant surprise! There's a plot being run on 2k5 that features Thunderwing. Oh drool and slobber. If there was proof that the rollover in the staff is a good thing, THIS IS IT.
