[juin. 3e, 2008|11:05 pm]
my last day in paris was unsurprisingly unexciting. it was similar to any other day, aside from the wretched feeling that it may be the last time i ever (insert event here: ride the 27 bus, walk along the seine, eat a viennoise chocolate, etc). in any case, i woke up at about 8 am after poorly sleeping. i finished watching good burger (which by the way is even more excellent than i remembered) and then packed some. eventually, i made plans with laura and laura to have a piquenique in the bois du boulogne. it's so big that we barely breached it. but, we did find a nice little abandoned shelter to protect us from the rain while we ate our lunch. then, a man came by and asked if he could sit with us. it was really awkward and he was overly persistent. it was actually kind of scary. laura preston tried to give him a cookie, and he wanted her to feed it to him. he was really sketch and it was really gross. and he wouldn't stop poking me. he kept asking us if it was okay if he sat with us, assuring us that "c'est normale, quoi." well, we didn't think it was normale and we wanted him to skidaddle (sp?). finally he did, after we told him many a time that we didn't want him to be there. we finished out picnic and left.

laura i went to go stuff before babysitting. laura p and i tried to go to a movie, but she didn't like any of the choices. so, we just walked up to the seine. on the way, a man told me "je te connais." and i was like, "euh...." then he was like "tu te souviens? bercy? avec tes copines?" and then i remembered. it was david, of abdul and david, that jill, ren, and laura i and i hung out with in the parc bercy one time. we taught them how to play champong and flip cup and they smoked us up. then, they wanted to have their way with us, but jill and i weren't having that. they gave us their numbers, but we obviously didn't call them. it was rather awkward to run into him on boulevard st germain. after getting to the seine, laura p and i decided we were too lazy do to anything and i rode the 27 bus home after getting a nice tacky university of paris t-shirt.

at home, i finished packing. then i had my last dinner with caroline and clement. i was/am sad to leave them and i sincerely hope to see them in the near future. unfortunately, all three of us are awful at keeping in touch.

then, i went down to the mailbox to mail myself a letter.

does anyone want to go see kimya dawson open for ani difranco in northampton on july 12th or hyannis on july 13th?

please say yes. i ♥ kimya.

plus, this would be the second time that i went to an ani difranco concert and was infinitely more interested in the opening act.

whack happenings in scandinavia [mai. 5e, 2008|09:48 pm]
1. in stockholm, christina and i witnessed a giant jesus parade. it was really long. there was also a concert in spanish. or, spanwedish. i'm not sure because i don't speak either. we encountered this parade many times throughout the day. apparently, the swedes love the j-man.

2. in copenhagen, at a restaurant, i was inquiring as to whether i could have spaghetti with tomato sauce. the waitress commanded me to "speak engrish." i mean, i thought i was speaking engrish, but i guess i was incorrect. seeing my confusion, the waitress asked "could you speak engrish?" christina affirmed that we were, in fact, speaking engrish. the waitress still could not understand our engrish (even though it is our native language), she went and found another waiter. spaghetti with tomato sauce was not an option, so i got pizza. i paid more for soda water than i did for pizza. like, 15 euro for soda water.

3. also in copenhagen, there was a duck in a puddle. we thought it was funny so we stopped so i could take a picture. this man that was on a bike had stopped and was trying to throw his coat on the duck. somehow, he revealed to us that this duck was "very pregnant" and she needed to get back to the lake before she got hit by a car. so, he was trying to pick her up to bring her back to the lake. he told us that if we could, grab her. i asked "how do you pick up a duck?" assuming that he had some sort of experience in the duck-picking-up field. he responded "figure it out." so, instead of grabbing a pregnant duck, we just ended up herding her down the bike lane and across a busy street to the lake, where the man proclaimed "she's a very lucky duck." he didn't find this funny. i assume that "lucky duck" isn't an idiom in denmark. in any case, when christina asked him if it was the right lake, he declared that it was "her problem now."

4. on the flight back to paris, there was something suspicious in my bag. i also was randomly patted down. so, i got felt up and got to see all of my belongings strewn all over the airport for essentially no reason. plus, i didn't even have anything questionable. so, i was excited to find out what this suspicious item was. in the end, the alleged suspicious mystery item was a book. it was suspicious because it was a large amount of "organic material." while the woman was touching my dirty pajamas, i inquired as to why i had been patted down as well. her colleague said it was random. the woman sifting through my laundry to find my suspicious book said that i probably set off the metal detector with my heart of gold.

another whack day! [mar. 28e, 2008|01:17 pm]
this is a belated post about a whack day, since the whack day in question was the 18th of march.

it all starts out while i was sleeping. i had this dream where i was trying to convince some nuns to change the color of their habits. and all but the eldest sister was up for it. she claimed that green was not a good color for nuns to be wearing, but couldn't explain why. so, in an attempt to convince her, the rest of the nuns and i broke out in song....none other than madonna's "like a prayer." at the point when madonna (or i, as it was in the dream) says "let the choir sing," all of the walls got blasted away, revealing a choir of what must've been well over 1,000 people. then, i had madonna stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

after atelier d'ecriture, caroline and i were scheduled to meet up with jillian and liz, who had just arrived from les etats-unis. but, beforehand, we had to watch the video for "like a prayer" which is a la fois horribly racist and remarkable. as we're watching this work of art, eglal comes in and criticizes our use of smith computers. at that moment, liz calls caroline, who misses the call. i decide to open the window to see if they're outside reid hall. then, i try to simultaneously call liz and close the window. in using my forearm to close the window, my elbow somehow penetrated the window, causing the pane of glass to fall three stories to the ground. surprisingly, no one was injured. then, i had to run all over reid hall telling various persons about the window problem. unfortunately, i couldn't stay to get the results because liz was calling. so, caroline and i set out to find jillian and liz, which we did, and then we ate pizza.

then, we took them to see the oldest tree in paris. i was walking up to it, because i wanted to sit on the cement thing holding it up. but, for some reason, i turned just slightly and very abruptly. good thing i did, because at that moment, a bird defecated right where my body had just been.

then, i went to my art history class and took a test that i was incredibly unprepared for and still managed to do quite well.

then, i went to see the gossip. they played last and i and my feet were very tired by the time they finally played. as expected, they were very good. they even played "are you that somebody!" i guess it's a little silly that my favorite song that the gossip plays is actually an aaliyah song. beth ditto also must like aaliyah, because she announced to the crowd "viva aaliyah!" i am in agreement with that statement. at this show, there was a metal barrier set up so people couldn't get on stage. all the people that were crowd-surfing were pulled over the barrier by security and expelled from the concert. one such crowd surfer....crowd wipe-out and landed smack dab on my head. which, ow. that's what i get for paying attention to the gossip and not assholes behind me, i guess. apparently, beth ditto didn't like this practice of expelling crowd surfing sweaty assholes. when one was about to be thrown out, she grabbed him up on stage. this caused a stampede of people crowd surfing and just jumping over the barrier to get up and dance with ms. ditto. then, they all had to leave. some more people tried to do it during the encore, but security was like "oh no you didn't." then, after the encore, beth ditto came back out and was like "do me a favor? you know that edith piaf song? sing it to me?" and the entire crowd broke out in "la vie en rose." it was half surreal because it was surreal and half surreal because i think i ended up with a minor concussion.

my whack day [fév. 26e, 2008|11:25 pm]
so, today, i had un partiel at 9 am. i left my house at 8, even though it only takes half an hour to get there. i was about 30 seconds late for the bus, but i still could get on it because it was at a red light. or so i thought! the bus driver would not let me on. because of this, i had to wait for the next bus which came not 6, not 12, not 18, but some numeral over 20 minutes later. not only that, but it was raining. while waiting for said bus, a psychotic man with a crutch and a cut on his nose muttered some weird things and then yelled at a middle aged asian woman and then elbowed her in the face. so, i'm finally on the bus. but, i'm late for my exam. but, because i'm a stupid american, they let me take it anyway. normally, if you're late, you don't get to take the exam.

so, after that, i went to my atelier d'ecriture class. the writing prompt today was about missing the bus. ironic. i ended up taking the story of what had happened to me earlier, but i changed some things so it fit the prompt.

then, after art history, i was looking for cupcakes and ran into april ko from south. it was very weird. then the cupcake place was closed, but the place next door was open. i ended up getting this like....weird sandwich thing. well, not a sandwich. but it was like custard and raspberries in between two sugary blobs that resembled a hamburger bun.

then, once i was home, this little girl and her mom who used to live next door came by to visit my mere d'accueil. the little girl was really cute. i played guitar for her (at her request) and tried to explain the different notes to her. i even drew her a little piano to illustrate the notes. but, it's surprisingly hard to try to explain music (however basic) to a 7 year old girl in french. she told me i am belle and drew me a flower. then she taught me how to make a capital T in cursive.she also said my mechanical pencil was weird. i asked her if they have them in france, and she said yes but her mom wouldn't buy them for her. so, i had like half a box of mechanical pencils sitting around. and let's be honest, how many do i need? so, i gave her my staples brand mechanical pencils, which made her incredibly happy. kids get happy about the strangest things. it's actually kind of funny because my mom gave me those pencils and then i gave them to someone whose mom doesn't buy her mechanical pencils.

then, we had sushi for dinner. apparently, franco-japanese miso soup involves mushrooms.
