Special Request

Aug. 9th, 2008 | 03:52 pm

There have been several warnings and cautions against spoilers on the public boards. I'd like to also request that if people post results in their personal journals, that they include very prominent SPOILER ALERT warnings.

I try to read all my friends journals and don't want to be unpleasantly suprised!

Thank you very much.

Tutaev & Montezuma's Revenge

Jan. 27th, 2007 | 08:19 am

Hi everybody!

I posted a clarification as to what the pix I posted last time were in the comments section of my post titled "some pix." I couldn't figure out how to edit because all my LJ headers are in cyrillic! I'm illiterate in this country and it's awful!

I was smacked down for 3 days this week with a travel's bug and without going into detail, it was the most vile and disgusting sickness I've ever had in my life. Let's leave it at that.

Fortunately, I didn't get sick until after our trip to Tutaev, a little village about 40 miles from here. The people there still live as they did in the 18th Century, with no electricity or water. The town is on both sides of the Volga River, but there is no bridge. In summer, they cross to the other side by boat. But in winter, they have to drive to a bridge that's like an hour away and then drive back to the other side of town, so it takes like 2 hours! We were on the poor side. I can't believe people live like that still when they're only 250 km from Moscow! But it's enchantingly beautiful. Thought I'd share some pix:

I love you all and miss you a lot!

Hi Everybody!

Jan. 22nd, 2007 | 03:19 am

I'm in Russia! It's so hard to get to the Internet cafe and I'm writing this as fast as I can! Over here, the LJ menus are all in cyrillic! It's hard to figure out where my friends page is! I should have memorized the tool bar before I left!

It's packed, it's crazy, I'm really busy, but the kids are adorable and sweet and fun. The people are nice, the food is good, the hotel is shabby by American standards but clean and warm. Last week I was roasting in my big ass down coat, but today is freezing and snowing like crazy, like somebody in heaven slashed open a down pillow and is just letting the insides flutter down to earth. So of course I'm a little freaked out but totally loving it. The Russians laugh at me because what they think is a sprinkle, I think is a snowstorm.

I miss you guys. I miss IM'ing. I miss the internet in English. I'm with really nice cool people tho.

Steph, the Russian book you sent me is a lifesaver, and they were SO HAPPY to have the yarn. I couldn't fit all of it in my luggage, but I managed to bring about 2/3 of it - everybody says THANK YOU!

I wish I had more time. This computer is really slow and wastes an unbelievable amount of time and I have to get back to my group. The internet cafe is a bitch to get to - like, a 30 minute commute!

I just wanted to pop in and remind everybody that I still exist and I love you and miss you. Will write a decent post about life here soon.

Monday Morning Quarterbacking

Mar. 6th, 2006 | 08:16 pm

You know you're a film geek when you say things like, "Hey! Six different films won Oscars in the six major categories! That hasn't happened since 1956!"

I also noticed that no entertainment reporters seem to be mentioning this worthy piece of Oscar trivia. I plan to e-mail a few of them with this information after I write this entry, so if you read it somewhere later, remember ... you heard it here first!

Three things I learned from watching this year's Academy Awards:

1. If some stylist ever tries to convince me that I look great in a Velveeta-colored dress, don't believe her. (Oh wait. I knew that already. Unlike Michelle Williams.)

2. Never wear a bow that's bigger than your head. (Oh wait. I knew that too. Sorry, Charlize.)

3. It's hard out here for a pimp. (That I really did NOT know. Silly me -- I thought it was hard out here for the ho's.)

I pulled off a fairly respectable 60% accuracy rate on my predictions (9/15). Did not win the pool, but would have tied for the win had I played it safe and predicted Reese instead of Felicity. I thought that was a lot safer bet than "Crash" for Best Picture, but I was so happy "Crash" won. That was a pick I was thrilled to lose. Everybody should see that movie.

You probably have to see the films to really enjoy the awards, but even if you haven't, you can enjoy the fashion. My picks for the 5 best-dressed women: 1. Kiera Knightly. 2. Jessica Alba. 3. Salma Hayek 4. Felicity Huffman 5. Jada Pinkett.

Oscar Picks & Predictions

Mar. 5th, 2006 | 12:42 am
music: SNL while chatting

Time for my annual Oscar picks & predictions. I do this every year so it really is annual but I've never done it on LJ before. Usually I just do it in a pool I do with friends which I'm also doing this year. I'm only doing the acting, directing and best picture categories here cuz I don't think anybody really cares about the others, and to tell you the truth, I don't much care either except maybe for screenwriting. I should note that I predicted only 40% accuracy last year but 70% accuracy the year before, so I have a dismal 55% accuracy rating (although I DID hit 75% with my AI predictions earlier this week!)Read more... )

For Angie

Dec. 29th, 2005 | 10:11 pm

I got this note from one of my U.S. senators today in response to the email I sent after Angie asked us to write them. It's very nice, even if it does baffle me. He keeps talking about food stamps and Medicaid, but I wrote to him about Head Start! Angie, is Head Start part of the Medicaid or food stamps program? I'm perplexed. I'm surprised his email to me is so long (and so poorly punctuated). Still, thought I'd share if anybody cares. And oh yeah -- he didn't vote the way Angie & I told him to! Read more... )
