Well, I just picked up Spore - the Galactic Edition, to boot. That's me out of action for a while.

I've been wondering if we'd be a little less hung up about sport as a nation if we finally stopped sitting on our thumbs and became a proper republic, ditched the Union Jack, and all that, because it seems to me we'd be a little less concerned about making the world notice us by getting high up on the medal tally by ensuring that John Coates and his pals are supplied with big stacks of cash.

Which is not to say I didn't enjoy fair swathes of it after being pretty sceptical about it (let's just say Athens barely left an imprint on me), particularly some of those out-of-the-box performances like Hooker in the pole vault, or Mitcham taking the opportunity to nail a near-perfect dive after Zhou Luxin flubbed his last. Even the likes of Meares and McLellan and Tallent were notable, even if they didn't come first. Problem is we've really only noticed the Australians doing that sort of thing, aside from the obvious highlights of Phelps and Bolt.

Alongside them, though, Matthias Steiner's story is probably up there.

Well, I guess I meant to do this back when I got the book, but DAMN it's a long list. Note I haven't included the whole thing (I snarfed the list from [info]trayce's entry) but just deleted those I don't have.
1001 albums thingy whatever  )
137 in all. No doubt I've missed one or two that I do have, but now's your chance to ponder why I don't have [insert your favourite album from the list] while I've got all the U2 mentions and I can respond by asking you why you don't have Fuzzy Logic.

I do apologize for the Coldplay and MBV, I mainly got those to find out what the fuss was about and was rather disappointed.

Status with the Antlerland thingy;

Anyway, in short:
Last week of August: Friends Don't Let Friends Electric
October: "The Sharpest Knife" plus antecedents (four tracks in all)
December: Two new songs (packaged per Antlerland tradition up until 2006.)
2009: Two albums, at least.

Anyway, I also have a fair heap of study I really need to hoe through this week, so I'm just going to have to be no downtime man for a change. The remaining Friends stuff will be worked in between that and work.

I've figured out how to get this vocoder plugin thingy working to my satisfaction.

Be afraid, be afraid to an arbitary degree. It might or might not make it to the release, we'll see.

Oh woe, Wolfmother have broken up.

I guess we've all had a moment like Mike had there where you realise that something sounds like it came from Countdown c. 1976 (i.e. the sort of thing that made people glad that punk and/or disco came along) and you just wonder why it exists.

As you know I don't read that many weblogs any more, but I came across this one, SquareMans, after looking something about The Black Hole, and thought it quite interesting. Well worth having a look. Try the "Christopher Tolkien Must Die", it's really interesting look at the LotR licensing and why you will never see a Simarillion movie.

Matthew Colville writes in a style I quite like, enthusiastic without being fannish. If and when I bother with blogging again, I'd like to try and write in a similar style.

On other matters. Presentation thingy went OK tonight, I still have cobble together the report and send that in a couple of days, so I'm getting there. After that, my next priority is to finish the fonts and have those ready by the end of the week, so I can get paid for that and then sort out some other things that I've put off for a while.

After not getting that much sleep this morning, about five hours interrupted by cold feet, I'm going to start catching up on that right after I post this, hopefully I can prise myself out of bed for a early start tomorrow.

this is what I do for Sunday lunch
Which is pretty much bacon & eggs. All fried. I also like to throw some cheese on top of the bacon and then fry a couple of slices of tomato for less than a minute and let the cheese all go gooey all over the bacon while that's happening, then the tomato goes on top of all that. Essentially, with the toast, it's an egg and bacon roll on a plate (though I do skip on the sauce because, well, there's REAL tomato on it) - really, it's nothing too fancy, but whether I'm hungover or not, it's great for starting a Sunday. Also the makings are about a third of what you'd pay for it in a cafe.

Next: making cheese on toast AWESOME.

I just had the idea of doing a slowcore (or whatever you call whatever it was Morphine and Low used to do) version of "If You Leave Me, Can I Come Too?". Yeaaah.

Too busy to mess around with that idea at the moment, which is probably just as well.

Been messing around a bit with Renoise a bit this arvo. It looks a bit hackish and weird in the style of old school trackers (as in FT2, hmmm, never liked the interface of that), and frankly some of the default key mappings leave a little to be desired, not to mention the conversion from IT files is a bit off as well, for instance the pitch slides are completely up to pot.

But there's also some really nice features going on with it, such as effects chaining, so I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I've started retooling Das Boutique because that's a nice idea but sounds like shit at the moment.

Costs a little bit to register it (and hence be able to write to audio files with it), and that's going to have to wait until the next month or so, but it seems to have enough in it to be worth persevering with.
