Mon, Jul. 7th, 2008, 05:58 am 'Elsewhere'... a widely known "best-kept secret"
Dabolim-based fashion photographer Denzil Sequeira's place. At Morjim in Pernem taluka. OPENQUOTE: The old Portuguese Colony of Goa lies on the west coast of India. 'Elsewhere' is one of Goa's best kept secrets. The road follows the Chapora River down stream through fishing hamlets before turning north. From here it winds through fields full of rice, chillies and onions before climbing on to the plateau giving breathtaking views of the beach and ocean. A few kilometers further on you will drop down and follow the shoreline until a Creek forces the road to turn inland. Stop here to admire the view because ahead lies 'Elsewhere'. Sun, Jul. 6th, 2008, 04:36 pm By George!
George Menezes, the humour writer and human resources guru, has come up with a website of its own. Great going, and neat use of new communication technology for a very readable writer, who turns 80 in some months time!
Menezes wrote to say: "It will contain humour, inspirational pieces, opinion pieces, management and others." He argued that "freelancing is becoming difficult" these days, as journos are increasingly allowed to use their bylines, and writers need to compete with advertising taking up more space.
"I want more people to be able to read what I write including lots of old fans who say 'You are not writing enough,' or 'Missed your piece which I am told appeared in the TOI Goa Edition two days ago'," he told me.
One felt sad to read George saying, "Most important, I do not have many years left...." For once, I hope he's wrong.
Three cheers to the man who has brought many a laugh to our faces, and helped others understand the complex place that is Goa. See his site at georgemenace.com or email him at writer.george@gmail.com Sun, Jul. 6th, 2008, 12:59 am Few expat Goan links

The Origin and Spread of Gauda Saraswats - Part I by Suryakant Kamath and interesting essay: I have ventured to undertake this writing at the kind invitation extended by the Sri Gokarna Parthagali Matha as a love's labour. But this is not written with a view to create any empty pride among the members of the community to make them consider that we as brahmins are a superior race, or that Saraswats are superior to other brahmins. Such an attitude is meaningless in the modern world. History is written to help us only to know at what stage of the evolution of the human society we live, and whether we are progressing. History is studied to learn lessons, help us understand ourselves and our surroundings and to examine whether the institutions (social, religious and communal) that we have evolved are better ones. At times, the past may inspire us to aspire for higher things. It may provide us inspiration to lead a better life by being more useful to the community, society and the country. It may also help us know in case we are leading a life far inferior than our be gone generation, how we can improve ourselves. Let us not even for a moment take pride in our past unnecessarily, without being worthy of that past and thus tread the slippery path of our fall. Empty pride is a symptom of mental sickness. Let us not be victims of such a disease. My interest in the subject is as old as thirty years. W Sat, Jan. 5th, 2008, 12:15 am Leonard Fernandes' links...
Some interesting links from Leonard Fernandes who runs an interesting books related site, straight out of Gogol, Margao. He's also into POD (print on demand). I recently tried Leonard's service (for a book that required only 20 copies to be printed). I was impressed by his service -- prompt, efficient, neat (looks better than a book!), timely and affordable (a bit higher priced than a traditional book, but you save a lot instead of wastages incurred on printing more-than-the-needed number of copies). If he gives the same service to everyone, I would not hesitate recommending this young man's work (a venture he runs with wife Quennie). OPENQUOTE: The Save Goa Camapign was initiated by the people residing in Goa, whether native or in-migrants over the years, hwo were aghast to see the indiscriminate cutting of hills and trees, filling of the riversides and destruction of sand dunes and beaches in the name of DEVELOPMENT in Goa. The campaign was formally launched at a public rally held on Monday 18 December, 2006 at the historic AZAD MAIDAN near the memorial of Tristao Braganca e Cunha who sttod for the people of Goa and their rights even during the erstwhile colonial rule. The newspapers on 19 December, a day remembered as the LIBERATION DAY from colonial rule, carried stories of the new liberation movement, started after a thorough study of the Regional Plan 2011, the maps, satellite imagery [thanks to Google Earth] and other documents on Goa. The turn-out of 7000 committed persons [conservative estimate] from all over Goa among the 10,000-odd persons seen at the Azad Maidan on 18 December,2006, for the very first meeting is indicative of the popular base of the Save Goa Movement [also known as Save Goa Abhiyan] This yahoogroup is created to facilitate interaction among the members leading or co-ordinating the movement.
