09:49 am - Dictionary of American Regional Gnomi-isms Because ayoub made me think about it, and because I've always had a not-so-secret desire to be a lexicographer, I pose the following question:
If there were to be a dictionary of gnomi-isms, what words would it contain?
Off the top of my head, I can think of:
-- Splorp (that which inspired this line of thought) -- Narf -- Thingy -- Obnox -- Enpenguinate
Additional gnomi-isms: -- Horfles (suggested by mabfan) -- Procrastisurfing (suggested by tsuki_no_bara) -- Snackquisition (suggested by beths_stanley) -- Pornucopia (suggested by beths_stanley)
But then I get stuck. I know there are many words in my idiolect that are specifically gnomi-isms, but I have no idea what they are. So I bring it to you. What should go in the Dictionary of gnomi-isms? Current Mood: creative

01:10 pm - A Ponderance During Lunch -- Food Edition I have come, somewhat unexpectedly, into a carton of heavy cream (AKA protosplorp). I don't have the time or energy to make anything overly ambitious for Shabbat this week. Do I just make it into splorp, figuring I can find *something* that requires splorp, or do I make something else out of it? Current Mood: contemplative

11:36 am - Out of Sorts Send more sorts. Bubble, selection, insertion, shell... I'm not picky. I'll even take gnome or pigeonhole (though not bucket, as the lolrus took it). Current Mood: out of sorts

01:38 pm - Air Your Craft-Related Grievances! (and it's not even Festivus)
I'll start:
Center-pull balls that don't. I shouldn't have to stop in the middle of my sock to untangle the gob of yarn that just spewed forth.

08:13 am - Welcome to the gnomiverse! I've picked up a bunch of new readers round these parts recently, so I figured it was about time to rerun the "General Guide to the gnomiverse" post (now updated and expanded! And 20% more expensive for a slightly smaller box!).
Things One Should Know About gnomi:
-- I'm originally from Burlington, Massachusetts. -- I have the following relatives that hang out on LJ with varying levels of regularity: mabfan (my husband), lcmlc (my mother), beckyfeld (my sister), and osewalrus (my brother-in-law, married to beckyfeld) -- There are folks on my friends list who I have known since elementary school or even before. -- I am a word nerd and an inveterate punster. I wrangle words professionally, both as a technical writer and as a freelance editor. -- I grew up functionally bilingual in an English-speaking household (a story unto itself). This means that I occasionally run into words in my vocabulary that don't have English equivalents, and this will spill over into my LJ. As a general policy, if I use a word/phrase/concept that needs more explanation, please tell me. -- I'm an Orthodox Jew, and I have been known to yammer on about obscure Jewish topics here. -- I knit (a lot), I sew (less than I used to, but still a decent amount), and I'm occasionally dabble in beading. -- I have an inexplicable love of penguins. -- I have a standing policy on icons in comments. -- My life is one long musical cue. Anything and everything is a prompt for me to break out in song (or, as it manifests itself here periodically, in random lyrics), and I'm hugely susceptible to earworms. -- I will break out into song at the smallest provocation. -- I encourage discussion in comments, as long as everyone stays civil. Disagreement is good; ad hominem attacks will not be tolerated (and will be deleted).
Recurring Features in the gnomiverse:
-- "No, Really, We Talk Like This" (oddball conversations, usually between mabfan and me) -- Language-related polls -- Menu planning (usually for Shabbat (the Sabbath) or Jewish holidays) -- Rambly Bits (catchall posts of stuff I've been thinking about that don't merit their own posts)
As a couple of people have pointed out, "Narf" is always an appropriate response to a question I ask.
So, pull up a seat, grab a drink or a snack, and enjoy yourself! Current Mood: cheerful

12:40 pm - Another (Lunchtime) Edition of "No, Really -- We Talk Like This" (Scene: mabfan and gnomi are eating their lunches at their respective desks at their respective offices; this conversation occurred via an IM-like system.)
mabfan: Are you a pizza?
gnomi: I don't believe I am, no. :-)
mabfan: Are you sure you are not a pizza? Because that would be cool if you were.
gnomi: Well, "cool" is relative. You don't like cold pizza.
gnomi: And if I were a pizza, I couldn't pick up your comic books.
mabfan: But maybe you could be a were-pizza. So you could pick up my comic books and then be a pizza.
gnomi: Then we'd have to figure out how frequently I turn into a pizza.
gnomi: Nightly? On full moons only (because they look like pizza crusts)? Something else?
mabfan: Whenever we needed a pizza, of course. Current Mood: silly

11:00 am - Ganked from scarlettina The first five people who reply to this post, and who re-post this challenge: YOU WIN!!!
For your prize, I will send you a gift.
It might be something I've made, or something cool from my hidden stash of obscure grooviness. It might be a rubber duck, or a toy, or a pretty picture, or a book I think you might enjoy. A useful object, a tchotchke, a piece of jewelry, or something else that is taking up room in my house.
Whatever it is, I promise I will get it to you in 30 days of your posted comment or less, and you must e-mail me your mailing address. Even if you think I already have it.
E-mail your address to me via Live Journal (gnomi [at] livejournal [dot] com) Current Mood: creative

09:02 pm - Thursday Evening Rambly Bits -- My post about the No on #1 sign was apparently picked up by both Universal Hub and the Brookline TAB blog, so welcome to anyone who's wandered over here from there.
-- ragingpixie asked for a photo of the tastiest thing in my fridge or pantry, but at the moment all she'd get is a photo of aluminum pans (containing baked ziti and chocolate carrot cake cupcakes), so I think I'll hold off until I cook something more photogenic.
-- Speaking of photos, I took this one this morning:
-- I've discovered that the most convenient place to store the cable needle I'm using to make the scarf in my icon when I'm between bits that require it is between my teeth. I'm trying to decide how odd that is. Current Mood: sleepy

07:07 pm And now, the sign that prompted this morning's thought question:
The irony of it all is that one of the main foci of the funding hoped for under this question (a proposed override of Proposition 2 1/2) is earmarked for programs for Brookline public schools. Current Mood: amused

01:40 pm - In Which gnomi is a Musical Troublemaker So mabfan and I met for lunch downtown (as is our usual pattern for Tuesday), and as we're walking back to the T along Tremont St., we pass a tour group being led by a woman in Colonial garb. Just as we pass, she starts leading them in song:
"My country, 'tis of thee/Sweet land of liberty/Of thee I sing."
As we pass, I sing -- not softly, but not loudly, either, and mabfan joins in -- "Send her victorious/Happy and glorious/Long to reign o'er us/God save the Queen."
We then sang the next stanza ("Oh, Lord our God arise/Scatter her enemies/And make them fall./Confound their politics/Frustrate their knavish tricks/On thee our hopes we fix/God save us all") as we headed across Park St. to the T. Current Mood: silly

10:55 am - A Thought Question Is it wrong of me to vote against someone/something because there's an extraneous apostrophe in the signs supporting it?

10:35 am - Rambly Bits, Weekend Roundup Edition -- Had guests for both meals on Shabbat. Was much fun. People ate lots. We still have lots and lots of baked ziti left (because I made two pans, lest we not have enough food).
-- Am going to make another pot of corn chowder tonight, for eating the rest of the week. No particular reason other than it's tasty and we like it.
-- To ponder: does corn bread go with corn chowder, or is it too much corn all in one place.
-- Note: chocolate carrot cake makes excellent cupcakes. Also note: having folks frost their own (bringing the container of cream cheese frosting to the table) is an excellent idea all around. And it prompts people to randomly eat the frosting. Further note: making the frosting in a Gladware container was good decision.
-- Watched "The Specials" on Saturday night, borrowed from xiphias and cheshyre. Was cute movie. Still liked "Mystery Men" better.
-- Sunday, saw "Iron Man." Highly recommended. If you go, do stay through the credits. It's worth it. Trust me.
-- Sunday afternoon spent mostly editing. Got lots done, still some to finish up.
-- Now back in office. Cannot type "None" without almost typing "Nomi." Fingers clearly trained. Current Mood: busy

01:03 pm - Two Knitting-Related Questions -- Seeking Opinions 1. Mostly for those who knit with natural fibers exclusively, but open to everyone: Do "regenerated" yarns such as those made of corn silk or soy or whatever qualify as "natural" in your mind? Why or why not?
2. If I have a pattern that was originally available free online but is no longer due to the designer removing it from his/her site, is it ethical of me to share my copy of that pattern? Why or why not? Current Mood: contemplative

09:24 am - Greetings Happy birthday, running_girl4!

09:15 am - My Family Talks Like This, Too Scene: gnomi is talking to lcmlc and Abba about lcmlc's current issues with Thoracic Outlet Compression.
lcmlc: Abba says it shouldn't be "thoracic," but "jurassic"*
Abba: Jurassic Outlet -- the place to get your low-priced dinosaurs!
*There's a tradition of this in Jewish biblical exegesis. There are passages in the Talmud and other rabbinic writings where they say, to bring a lesson (in that they don't actually believe we're misreading the text, but that a small change in the text allows them to bring another lesson. The Hebrew that introduces these are "Al tikra _____ ella ______."
Oh, and Omer, day 12. Current Mood: amused

06:51 am - PSA: Fire in Manhole in Harvard Square Just so folks know: There is currently a manhole fire raging in Harvard Square, right near the Holyoke Center.
At the moment, they're still letting people out at Harvard on the Red Line, but this may change.
Buses are being diverted.
More info as I have it. Current Mood: busy

07:46 am - PSA for Commuters Through Harvard Square (buses) As of yesterday/this morning, there is construction going on in Harvard Square that affects bus routes. The advisory only lists the 66 as being affected, but I saw the 86 also taking an alternate route this morning, and I cannot imagine that they are the only buses being rerouted.
The bus driver on my 66 this morning said that the rerouting would be in effect for the next 8 weeks. From what I experienced this morning, my main advice is to leave extra time if possible. Current Mood: cranky
