Subject:PEANUT!
Time:12:12 am.
Mood: sleepy.
Music:Queens of the Stone Age / 3's and 7's.
I really can't be doing with summer. It's like I'm warm blooded, but in reverse; ACTION!!! during winter, chronic lethargy during the summer. I guess that's just part of being a werehamster, but it's much less fun than having really sharp teeth and cheek pouches. I am glad I don't have the furry coat. That would be too much.

Today, in addition to occasionally doing a spot of light work, we were given new fans (Yay!), I bought foam swords, and I had mushroom noodles for tea.

Sleep tight.

Time:12:23 am.

Music:Sirenia / The Other Side.
Ah, Holloway. Now I'll never get to tell you the real reason why I keep poking you. Come, run away with me to Diablo 3. You can sell me all sorts of demon-killing related shit there. And you won't ever have to learn to speak Korean.

Back to important matters. On saturday I had a hair cut, and bought a set of adventure dice - I know I have some D4's, but I can't find them anywhere. So, I got one of the Chessex 7-die sets, which all look very nice together. And they have a D4! So, you know, they do what I bought them for! Go me. They're speckled blue/grey with bright red numbers inked on them. They look like they'll be very easy to play with at the table.

It's been a slow day. I spent much of it playing Hellgate. Pretending it doesn't have a plot and running through it at a hundred miles an hour wherever the quest markers send you makes it much more fun.

Subject:This Weekend's Video Game News
Time:6:56 pm.

In a shocking display of ... somthing, the developers of Warhammer Online have removed the Orc class from the Orc race. You know, the basic Orc that makes up the overwhelming majority of any Orc horde. In comparison, this is akin to, say, playing a battlefield WW2 game where you aren't allowed to be a soldier.

Flagship Studios - occasional developers of somewhat overhyped and undertested 3D Diablo FPS clone Hellgate : London - appear now to have died, their games now possibly being the property of various investment banking groups across the world. Both current Hellgate subscribers said "meh" when questionned by our elite reporter, and then went back to their games of Diablo 2.

So, I'm looking over my player's D&D character sheets.

Oh my goddess. I have never seen character sheets so neat, tidy and complete.

I'll level with you, mine always look like a mess after a couple of sessions, and that's with them being collected by the GM between games. Even then, they don't contain every piece of information needed (Be that because it's not very relevant, like when we play Exalted - which I also don't understand one word of and basically like joining in for the ride - or that I've got my own book, like Feng Shui, varies). But here... every box. EVERY box is filled in. One of them even named the adventuring group ("The Otherdeens"), which is a nice, if irrelevant, touch. Every special ability is annotated, every skill calculated. Hell, some of them have put their names on there - their real names, not their character names. I didn't even know some of them had real names, let alone surnames.

I don't have a conclusion for this post.

Also, was anyone else bothered by the fact that Richard Dawkins, a biologist, was on TV talking about the appearance of 26 new planets in the sky? What exactly would a biologist have to contribute to any discussion about bizarre planetary appearances? :)

About as much as this particular biologist has to contribute to any discussion about religion!

CBT completed :)

Problems being slightly excess speed at junctions, and use of brakes (Front / back balance), and maybe a bit of practice on the clutch, but I've got roundabouts down well and I'm much more confident on the bike. Bit wobbly at first as I hadn't ridden for a week, but that's just inexperience so will pass when I have my own bike to ride every day. Yay!

Now I just need, well, my own bike! (And to pass my theory test)

Today I was productive and bought a motor cycle hat.

Last week I got my provisional license - which is neat, but I'll only have to exchange it in a few weeks anyway when we move house - and soon I shall acquire a motorised cycle to go with it.

And now I shall go back to sleep.

Sometimes, it is deeply frustrating to read something, and be unable to comment, instead having to watch them trudge in ignorance. I have seen light, people, and it is glorious.

Oh well.

I don't even have anything very funny to say about work, either. I think it's okay to say that we have paid people money - is that too much information? - but other than that, the most exciting part is that I have been actively choosing what to have for lunch in order to wind up my colleague, who I sent photos (Well, photo, singular) to last week just to prove I didn't have curry. Naturally, now that she is back, it's all aboard the curry train again. Yay!

Subject:RPG Gary Gygax
Time:11:11 pm.
Mood: sad.
I've never played D&D. Well, except for Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nghts, which don't really count. But without D&D, there would have been no Games Workshop for me, no Warhammer, no roleplaying, and generally none of that great stuff that got me and my friends through our teenage years. I wouldn't have met many great people through and about gaming. There would have been no Raw Deal, and all the brilliant hours I've spent playing that and friends I've made through it.

Worse still, video game RPG's may not have developed, without which I wouldn't have met my lovely wife.

I never met the guy. I've never played his game. I don't think I've ever even read any of them. But what the guy did has touched my life and so many of the people I care about so much that I can't imagine what life would be like if he hadn't been around.

Goodbye, Mr Gygax. You've more than earned a rest. Thank you for everything.

So, that was pretty damn cool, actually (I never watched any of Life on Mars, although it always sounded very, very interesting).

But... is Gene Hunt actually, well, Death? Or, at least, a Death (In the Pratchett / Gaiman sense)? "You'll be okay as long as you stick with him", or somesuch as one character said, and he's providing a path for them to keep on, to get them used to whatever is going to happen, using some environment with meaning to them.

Or it's just a gloriously cool pulp police procedural, of course, which works for me to be honest. I'd like to get my paws on those DVD's at some point.

Which is a shame, as I was rather looking forward to getting hold of a copy. GW's RPG publishing department (Of their fiction department) is being shut down, so bar a few sourcebooks in "the pipes", that's it (Unless someone manages to get GW to license it out to them).

Oh, and the last Blood Bowl book? NOT WORTH THE COST OF THE PAPER IT WAS WRITTEN ON. It is actually so poorly done that it trivialises what the Hackers (And in particular the Hoffnungs) achieved during the Gridiron Trilogy. Save your money if you've read the rest; if not, the first three are available pretty damn cheap, and are great funny sports-action novels, some minor editing problems notwithstanding.

If the cute purple/blue daemon chick is standing in the middle of a bunch of violent NPC's, that is probably because she is a scrapper (Note the spines sticking out all over her) and so tends to spend time in melee combat! She doesn't need or appreciate your sweeping in and saving her from the hordes of XP she was about to gain, thankyouverymuch.

GS: "Num num num skittles."
Purchasing: "We used to have skittles wars at our school."
GS: "..."

So, the rules for skittles wars are basically these :

1. Take two skittles, preferably of different colours
2. Place them together between your thumb and forefinger, in the arrangement thumb-skittle-skittle-forefinger.
3. Press hard.
4. Skittle that cracks first loses.

He used to play with a winner-stays-on, 3-wins-and-survive option (Where if a skittle won three rounds, it went in the bin instead of being eaten), but really, that's taking it a bit too far.

I had a small break this afternoon, and decided that I would run a quick tournament with the remains of the bag of skittles - two each of Purple, Green, Yellow and Orange, in a knockout competition.

ROUND 1

Green vs Yellow : Not even a contest - yellow was sugar dust before the bell finished ringing.
Orange vs Purple : Orange made a joke at the beginning of the match about it being "a contest between skittles of colour"; purple then pointed out that, as objects that reflect and absorb light, they were all technically "of colour", and then broke orange's back.
Purple vs Green : Green did everything it could, it even went through a nine-minute-long montage sequence, which ended as purple ambushed it with a sledgehammer.
Yellow vs Orange : The yellows just don't have the ability to compete at this level, and never was this more proven than here. Orange, the outside rookie, simply dominated from the off.

ROUND 2

Two purples in the semis! This was going to be good.

Purple vs Green : Green had been watching his buddy last round, and oh boy - was he PISSED! This veritable rematch could have gone either way, but green took advantage of a minor lapse of concentration from his purple partner to sneak in the old "shiv to the face!" tactic, and make his way to the final.
Purple vs Orange : Obviously dismayed by the loss of his compatriot in the first battle, this purple didn't really stand a chance. Orange blindsided it with a far side crack, and that's all she wrote.

ROUND 3

Both still sporting the remains of their purple opponents, round 3 was delayed by my colleague being on the phone being asked to purchase something. Popular betting was with Greenie, though. The fans demanded, but could he pull off the success he needed?

The exciting conclusion! )
