A few quick notes from the past two weekends... [Apr. 7th, 2008|10:21 pm]
[feeling | sleepy]

Sunday, March 30th, Peter and I went to the Midwest Gaming Classic. We enjoyed the usual (pinball), and played a bunch of arcades (mostly, various Gauntlet machines). (Local newspaper article, here. This is the first year the Journal-Sentinel covered the event, IIRC.) We also made some purchases, including a duplicate purchase of The Simpson's fifth season. Respond if you would like it for $20 -- slow shipment included for free! :} I took a couple photos, but none with Peter or myself in them. I'll get around to posting those eventually...

Saturday, April 5th, Peter/[info]hellsop, Peter's wonderful aunt Cynthia, and myself were accompanied by Michaela/[info]sharkskitten and John/[info]caveshark to the Met's live HD broadcast of La Boheme. (Last year, Peter, Cynthia, and I went to see Puccini's Il Trittico.) It was interesting to see the changes from last year's live broadcast. I had a fantastic time both years, but this year had the added bonus of watching the live broadcast hold up the actual preformance due to a booched interview with the conductor that overlapped with his call to the pit. Hehe.

After the performance, Kendra/[info]kendra_manycats and Keith-of-no-LJ joined us for dinner at Yokoso. Cynthia went home after dinner, and the rest of us went back to the duplex to enjoy the first evening of tolerable temperatures with drinks and conversation. :D

I would type more, but I need sleep...

Peace,

So...

I still get "Meetups in the Making" updates from Meetup.com. I'm not sure why I haven't unsubscribed from this list since the last Goth meetup occurred 3+ years ago, but I guess, my usual 5-second annoyance has been paid off today with a hearty laugh. :D The 'new blood' that sign up with an interest in getting the Goth meetup going again are truly a laugh (obviously I'm jellis :P).

In today's update, I spy the following jewel:

Penny the 'lette
Same on meetup.com can be seen here.

That's quite some jive there, young lady!

I vaguely recalled the term "juggahos," and I thought "fams" out ("It *must* be based on the word family"), but "'lettes" had me stumped. Okay, it had to be short for something (hence the apostrophe at the beginning), but what? I knew I needed the assistance of Urban Dictionary. (Oh, dear me!)

A few terms:
lette
fam
fams
juggalette (Definitely read these definitions! ... and that image! I really enjoyed the quote "We dont care about the rest of the world because we have our own that everyone else is obviously jealous of." :D :D I also was amused at the Scientology video channel ad I saw on the page.)
juggaho
juggahoe

Peter wanted me to upload this image to add to the second juggalette definition. Hee!

Nat-lette

See? She looks just like the juggalette example:

Sake and a linky... [Mar. 19th, 2008|09:57 pm]

[feeling | sleepy]

This past Sunday, [info]hellsop and I went to a sake tasting at Nanakusa. We were already familiar with a few of the sakes, but we tried them again, and took notes just the same. The following are my quick notes (err... scribbles) from the tasting. Keep in mind that they are in order of tasting and later tastes may have been influences by previous sakes and well, frankly, being under the influence thereof. ;}

Nigori
Ozeki (California) Ozeki Sake (U.S.A.) Inc.
Handout notes: Typical nigori style, very sweet and flavor of rice
My notes: Slightly sweet, low acid, medium to full body, cloudy

Kikusakari "Kurashizuku" (Ibaraki) Kiuchi Brewery
Handout notes: Chrysanthemum "Brewery dew" -- Light nigori with a hint of effervescence
My notes: Intially sweet -> slightly dry tail, slight tart, "clean"

Tozai "Voices in the Mist" (Osaka) Daimon Brewery
Handout notes: "Voices in the Mist" -- Ginjo quality light nigori sake
My notes: Lots of presence. Flowery, slightly sweeter than previous, "clean"

Tarusake
Kikusakari "Tarusake" (Ibaraki) Kiuchi Brewery
Handout notes: "Cask aged"
My notes: No scent, very little presence, very slight sweet, reminds me of a taste I can't recall/describe... 'silky'?

All Kouji
Kikusakari "Zen Kouji" (Ibaraki) Kiuchi Brewery
Handout notes: All koji sake, very sweet with a high acidity
My notes: Slight "scaley" scent, incredible presence, extremely clean, quite sweet with slight tart

Junmai
Yamadanishiki (Hyogo) Ozeki Sake (U.S.A.) Inc. Imported
Handout notes: Named for the most common sake rice -- Dry style.
My notes: Extremely faint rice scent, clean with slight sweet tail, full-bodied/first with 'legs'

Otokoyama (Hokkaido) OTOKOYAMA CO.,LTD
Handout notes: Man's Mountain - name of mountain in Hokkaido. Brewery established in 1661.
My notes: (Kimoto rather than export IIRC) Scent is slightly tangy/slightly clean, dry, kind of earthy, slight bitter, crisp tail

Ginjo
Momokawa Diamond (Oregon) SakéOne
Handout notes: Balanced, mineral elements
My notes: Very little scent, much tang, slightly sweet tail -- bonus note as I had a become more influenced... persuaded even: "I like :)"

Hananomai (Shizuoka) Hananomai Shuzo Co., Ltd.
Handout notes: Dancing Flowers -- Light and floral. Brewed with Mount Fuji spring water.
My notes: (Second to bottom on site linked above, or seen on this person's Flickr.) Floral and sweet scent; sweet with quick, clean tail

Sawanoi (Tokyo) Sawanoi Brewery (I couldn't find it on the page I expected, but here is another person's experiences with this one.)
Handout notes: Spring Creek -- Light, floral, clean.
My notes: Rich; sweet, but not overbearing / well-balanced -- bonus note again: "I like :)"

Bishonen (Kumanoto) Bishonen Shuzo Co., Ltd.
Handout notes: Handsom Lad -- Complex, clean, balanced.
My notes: Minor 'maritime' scent, fruity and slightly... ? (something I couldn't explain / "try again with cleaner palette"), clean tail -- one more time: "I like :)"

Shirataki "Jozen Mizunogotoshi" (Niigata) Shirataki Shuzo Co., Ltd
Handout notes: White Snow -- Slightly dry, long tail.
Spoken notes: "One of the best sake-producing areas..."
My notes: Slight rice scent, slightly dry, slightly earthy, lingering tail -- last time I wrote this: "I like :)"

Daiginjo
Kurosawa -- first listed under For U.S.A. (Nagano) Kurosawa Sake Brewery Co. LTD.
Handout notes: Black Creek -- Very clean, anise flavor.
My notes: Vaguely must (not in a bad way) scent; clean to start, sweet and fungal follows; very earthy presence

Wakatake "Onikoroshi" (Shizuoka) Oomuraya Shuzoba Co., Ltd.
Handout notes: Young Bamboo "Demon Slayer" -- Dry, full-bodied, earthy.
My notes: Slightly floral and slightly earthy scent; sweet and floral with an earthy base

(Holy wow, this took a long time to write up! Hours! I hope someone appreciates it...)

With dinner tonight I enjoyed Hakutsuru Superior Sake "Junmai Ginjo" (Kobe / Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Co.) It is light-bodied and dry.

The lyre bird, a quick thought on the kanji game... [Mar. 12th, 2008|09:02 pm]

[feeling | sleepy]

YOU MUST WATCH!

Yoinked a few days ago from the wonderful [info]cavalorn:
First
... and then

***

Having only played with the kanji game I mentioned yesterday a bit this morning and afternoon during the commute to/from work, here is what I would like to say so far:
This game was released in April 5, 2007, the company also released a newer version on November 29, 2007.

The most important thing the new version contains, that the version I have does not, is a dictionary from the writing training page. (From what I have read, the newer version also has more kanji.) The version I have only has writing practice and comprehension exercises. Therefore, the user either needs another DS with the dictionary, which I also purchased; a physical dictionary; or needs to be studying meanings and pronounciations seperately from using the software. I have discovered one such site that is useful to study while using the software, because it seperates the kanji into the years it is learned. The game teaches kanji learned in grades 1 through 6. Here is first year kanji on one helpful site: http://learn-japanese.info/firstgradekanji.html. This is useful when working on comprehension quizzes. For example, the first kanji in the quizzes is "子." The game first displays kanji and asks the user to write in the hiragana (e.g. "子犬" is displayed and the user writes "こいぬ"), then it displays the hiragana and the user must use the nice handwriting they worked on to write the kanji.

I have a few more thoughts floating around in my brainmeats so far. I may write those up tomorrow -- you could get these thoughts in bits and pieces, or I might write up a full review including the thoughts above, the other thoughts, and future thoughts. *shrugs* At this point, I don't know.

I catch up on sleep now (otherwise I would write up those other thoughts now)! Yatta!

Peace,
geek. ^_^

The First Child to Have Three Genetic Parents

In three to five years, a baby will be born with two genetic mothers and one father. This could prove to be a boon for polyamorous families of the future who want to have children with more than two parents. A team of British researchers working with embryos have now perfected the three-parent babymaking technique.
