New book for parents of Trans folks - Call for help!
ftmichael @ 17:42
From the TransFamily e-mail list.
Friends:
This is a serious, safe research survey to help provide support for more parents of gender diverse or Transgender children. It is being done by one of "our own" - parents of a Transgender child, and members of the TKF list. Joan and I have taken the survey, and we recommend that you consider doing the same.
The survey is non-threatening. It may lead to direct phone or email contact if you wish to share further with these authors. We hope it will lead to another valuable resource for parents and caregivers.
--Dave and Joan, parents of MTF Rachel
----------------------------------------
Many of you on this list may remember a few months ago when I announced that Karen and I are writing a book in support of parents of gender-variant children.
I am pleased to say that the online survey, a key research component for the book, has been approved by my college’s review process and is now available. Karen and I are hoping to attract as many responses to the survey as possible, and we are hoping that everyone on the list will complete the survey.
If you have questions about our research, please let me know.
What follows is the approved “invitation to participate” document.
Thanks,
Rex, dad to Cadence, MTF.

Invitation to Parents of Gender Diverse Children
We are the parents of a 29 year old male-to-female transsexual. When our child came out to us six years ago, we found that there was very little support for us in print, so, we are writing a book with the working title Now What? Parents of Transgender Children that examines the challenges, concerns and triumphs of parents of gender diverse children. The book will be structured around specific issues that we all face rather than as a series of case studies.
We send this email to invite parents of gender diverse children of any age to participate in our research.
If you are willing to complete an anonymous ten-minute on-line survey regarding the support, concerns and challenges that you have faced as the parent of a gender-variant child, please contact us at rex.butt@bcc.cuny.edu. You will be provided a link and password to complete the survey.
All questions on the survey will be voluntary. When you complete the survey, you will be offered the opportunity to participate further if you wish.
If you know of someone who has a gender diverse child, please forward this information to them.
Thank you,
Rex and Karen
Note: We value your privacy. This research project has been reviewed and approved by the Institutional Review Board of the City University of New York for research on human subjects.

My boyfriend said I had to post this.

I saw a bunny while I was walking home from camp today, before it started raining all over me (when I was halfway home on my five-minute walk, the skies open up and I was very wet by the time I walked in the door a few minutes later). I stopped and had a brief chat with him. He stopped a few feet from me and sat there while I talked to him, and I said we should both hurry home because it was going to storm, and he hopped away.

UK, Wales: Gay man's £37,000 sex case award

[Stephen Price talks to BBC Wales Today after his £35,000 compensation award - see 4-minute video at the above link.]
Gay man's £37,000 sex case award
A gay man who suffered "grotesquely discriminatory conduct" from the Presbyterian Church in Wales has been awarded £37,000.
Stephen Price, 25, of Clydach near Abergavenny, was bullied out of his job at Coleg Trefeca in Brecon by his manager Mair Jones, aged 40.
A Cardiff tribunal heard Mrs Jones called him a "stupid poof" and gave him pink fairy toilet paper as a gift.
The money was awarded for constructive dismissal and injury to feelings.
The church had denied Mr Price's claim for sexual harassment, constructive dismissal and discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation.
The tribunal's panel ruled the church's internal investigation into Mr Price's claims of harassment was unfair, unbalanced, confused and contradictory.
Employment judge Dr Rachel Davies said the church's final recommendation that Mr Price should go back to work with Mrs Jones amounted to constructive dismissal.
He was awarded £11,924 for constructive dismissal and £25,000 for injury to his feelings.

Man wins damages over gay driving test retake
Mon Jul 14, 2008 8:56am EDT
ROME (Reuters) - An Italian court has ruled the government must pay 100,000 euros ($157,700) in damages to a man who was told to retake a driving test because he was homosexual.
When 26 year old Danilo Giuffrida told doctors he was gay at his medical examination for military service, they passed the information to the transport ministry, who told him he must repeat his driving test or have his license withdrawn due to his "sexual identity disturbance."
Giuffrida agreed to re-take his test, passed it for a second time, but the ministry renewed his license for just one year rather than the usual 10 years because of his homosexuality.
The judge ruling on the case in Catania, on the southern island of Sicily, said the actions of the defense and transport ministries showed "evident sexual discrimination" against Giuffrida and ran counter to his constitutional rights.
The behaviour of the ministries led Giuffrida to have "a grave sense of mistrust towards the state," added the judge, who ordered them to pay him 100,000 euros of damages in his verdict issued on Saturday.
Giuffrida's lawyer said the case marked the first time the state had been punished for sexual discrimination, and he hoped Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi would "summon Giuffrida and apologise to him on behalf of the state and all Italians."
Giuffrida said the sentence was "a step forwards for civil rights because from now on what happened to me can't happen again."

UK: Welsh Archbishop's gay ordination offer and Archbishop of Caterbury's position 'untenable'

Archbishop's gay ordination offer
The Archbishop of Wales says he would be willing to consecrate a gay bishop.
Barry Morgan spoke as the world's first openly gay bishop, whose ordination has caused a split in the Anglican church, is to preach at a church in London.
Bishop of New Hampshire Gene Robinson has been excluded from the Lambeth Conference of church leaders.

Archbishop's position 'untenable'
An openly gay US bishop has said the Archbishop of Canterbury is in an "almost untenable" position as he tries to retain unity in the Church.
The Bishop of New Hampshire, Gene Robinson, said Dr Rowan Williams was trying to overcome deep divisions over the ordination of women and gay people.
But he told the BBC: "No matter what he does he makes someone mad."

Bishop Gene Robinson was not invited to the Lambeth Conference
Bishop Robinson is due to preach in London as the Anglican communion gathers for the Lambeth Conference.
The American preacher has been excluded from the event, held every 10 years, but has said he will be in Canterbury, where it is taking place, at the same time.
He is also due to speak at St Mary's Church in Putney, south-west London, on Sunday.
He said "a mistake was made" in not inviting him to the conference, but he would do whatever he could to raise the issue of gay rights "from the fringe".
He said he would not stage any kind of protest, but would simply "preach the word of God".

The end of another amazing visit
ftmichael @ 00:25
I just got back from taking
ganimede to the airport. This is the hardest part ... letting him go and then coming back home and wondering where he's gone. We had nearly 6 weeks together this time, and it was amazing. In about 6 months I'm hopefully going to go to England (my first time travelling outside the US!) and see him. January in the north of England. You're wicked jealous.
Must add to the list of sweet things Nathaniel says: 'It'll be okay even if you are a stupid American [which I mentioned was a concern of mine regarding international travel], because you're my stupid American.' Damn right I am.
I miss him so much already. There's an aching hole in my heart. Sympathy, love, commiserations, etc. are always welcome. (Hint.)
On the plus side, earlier today we were having trouble getting the tears to flow, and then we watched the Doctor Who season finale. That got the waterworks started. I'm nowhere near out of tears, but it was something.
I love you, Nathaniel.

Former US Republican Senator Jesse Helms - a leading conservative politician - has died aged 86, officials say.
He died early on Friday of natural causes in Raleigh, North Carolina, his former chief of staff said.
Mr Helms had served five terms in the Senate representing North Carolina before stepping down in 2003.

Jesse Helms had revelled in his conservative image
He was dubbed "Senator No" for blocking many policies he saw as contrary to his conservative view of the world.
Mr Helms was chairman of the influential Senate Foreign Relations Committee, becoming the first lawmaker to address the UN Security Council.

Google must divulge YouTube log

Google must divulge YouTube log
Google must hand over the log holding details of every user who has watched any video on YouTube, a US court ruled.
The ruling comes as part of Google's legal battle with Viacom over allegations of copyright infringement.
Digital rights group the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) called the ruling a "set-back to privacy rights".

Google owns video site YouTube
The log, which will be handed to Viacom, contains the log-in ID of users, the computer IP address (online identifier) and video file details.
Viacom, which owns MTV and Paramount Pictures, has alleged that YouTube is guilty of massive copyright infringement.
When it initiated legal action in March 2007 the firm said it had identified about 160,000 unauthorised clips of its programmes on the website, which had been viewed more than 1.5 billion times.
Following the launch its billion-dollar lawsuit, YouTube introduced filtering tools in an effort to prevent copyright materials from appearing on the site.
The court declined Viacom's request that Google be forced to hand over the source code of YouTube, saying it was a "trade secret" that should not be disclosed.
But it said privacy concerns expressed by Google about handing over the log were "speculative".
The ruling will see the viewing habits of millions of YouTube users given to Viacom.
The EFF said: "The Court's erroneous ruling is a set-back to privacy rights, and will allow Viacom to see what you are watching on YouTube.
"We urge Viacom to back off this overbroad request and Google to take all steps necessary to challenge this order and protect the rights of its users."

Bi personals site boots trans member

When Nick Teich created a free account on the online personals site BiDatingNow.com last week, he decided to disclose that he is transgender. Perhaps he shouldn’t have.
"They say, tell us about yourself in your own words. And I stated, ’I’m a 25-year old trans guy living in Boston.’ ... I didn’t want to mislead anyone looking at my profile, so that’s why I put that," said Teich. Within a day he had received three "smiles," which members send to express their interest in getting to know each other.
Teich thought little of his decision until he wrote to the site’s customer service staff about a problem he was having using the site. He exchanged e-mails with a customer service representative named Kiar Dupuis, and after reading his profile Dupuis informed him that the site does not allow transgender users.

Ten years later ...

Just after midnight today, a friend in the #ubuntuforums IRC channel (on Freenode) changed the channel topic from This is the Official blackhole of Ubuntu chatter || Be nice when playing with the bots! || Please respect the CoC! || http://ubuntubash.org/ to This is the Official blackhole of Ubuntu chatter || Be nice when playing with the bots! || Please respect the CoC! || http://ubuntubash.org/ || Happy 10th Birthday as you, FTMichael!
How incredibly sweet is that?
I hadn't even remembered yet that it was July 1998 (not sure of the exact date) that I started living entirely full-time as a guy - which for me meant switching to the men's room in public, as I was already living as a guy in every other respect. Ten years.
Note to my mother: No, I'm still not going to wake up one day and regret the whole thing.

While at Downtown Crossing and Quincy Market a few days ago, Nathaniel and I had a look at various shops that had red Converse high-tops like the Tenth Doctor wears, which Nathaniel desperately wants for his very own. Regrettably, all the red Converse high-tops we found were an unnaturally bright, almost orangey red that is not the same as the Doctor's, and far less appealing.
We did, however, see a lot of shoes on offer that looked like this:

NCTE Applauds the AMA Call for "Removal of Financial Barriers to Care for Transgender Patients"
The American Medical Association (AMA) passed a resolution yesterday calling for "public and private health insurance coverage for treatment of gender identity disorder as recommended by the patient's physician." The declaration, known as Resolution 122, "Removing Financial Barriers to Care for Transgender Patients," was passed by the House of Delegates - AMA's primary decision-making body - at its annual conference in Chicago.
Resolution 122 affirms the effectiveness of medical treatment for transsexuals and the right to appropriate treatment. It also names as discriminatory the categorical denial of health insurance coverage for psychotherapy, hormonal and surgical treatments for transgender patients, and reiterates the AMA's opposition to discrimination based on gender identity. The full text of the resolution is below.
