boifday
so, on monday i turn 30. which i imagine to many readers of these frilly blogs seems quite quite old. far too old to be taking emo photos of myself, and drawing poo and bum jokes. i should have a proper job by now huh.
but to be honest i really don't mind at all. i figure i've got another 20 years or so before i have to start being even a bit grown up, and even then there's no reason to stop drawing cats carving each other in half.
age used to bother me alot because i thought i was wasting my life, but now i'm far too concentrated on trying to get everything done in a day that i can. i'm excited about what's goin to happen. i'm too motivated. nervous breakdown motivated.

it does nothing but continue ^_^

Whubble, Raoul, Dan, Fat Chunk and a book full of tadgers.
if you're remotely interested in the work i do, or just ended up here because you googled 'goth' and 'anthropomorphic', then there is much news. these are unnervingly creative times in jamie brain. the amount of work actually getting done and released is only just surpassed by the amount of work i just don't have time to get started on. i need a team of monkeys.

1) first off, a thank you to whoever nominated Whubble as daily deviation on deviantart. the rewards of such a notion are quite apparent, the Whubble site got well over 20,000 hits in the last day alone, and duped a new score of people into reading it. In return, finally Whubble has RSS (cheers bard) so you can stop telling me to put it on, and follow his wheekly updates in RSS-world..

2)Last week the Dandy asked for a bundle more Desperate Dans to be done, which means a)presumably it's been going down well, and b) Dan's adventures will be continuing for a little while longer yet. This is, needless to say, very gratifying. My version of Dan will also be looking out at you in bookstores from the front cover of the Dandy annual next year, which is a buzz.

3) went to Dave's comics of the weekend and pleased to see FAT CHUNK displayed in the window, so bought a copy. Despite having stared at all the work involved endlessly for months, i still really enjoyed reading it and am so chuffed to finally see it out. I'm as proud of this fat baby as much as i am of any of my own work, so please do hunt yourself a copy.

4)
did you know you can preorder the SPACE RAOUL book already on amazon.com? no, me neither! but you can, it's only a few months till it's released! whoop sacks!

5) lastly, i had the curious norwegian/cockney bard over for the last week which has been alot of hetero fun. last night we childishly dragged around brighton's pubs filling a sketchbook with requests, obscenities, and far too much eye-blistering crudities. If you saw two idiot man-childs drawing over drinks, that was us. i offer this as example, only because it's the cleanest picture of all of them.

cheers then!

jx
ps. i know i get terribly predictable on saying this, but as ever i owe so many people so many emails. i am very very sorry. i get to it eventually, if you can be bothered to wait :p

FAT CHUNK volume one is on sale TODAY!
Finally we can say FAT CHUNK VOLUME ONE - ROBOTS is on sale NOW!

FAT CHUNK volume one collects over 80 top-tits artists, from comic book types to toy designers and everything in between, and crams them all into one tidy-size 144-page book for your chewing pleasure. Funny, poignant, cruel and sweet exclusive comic works all around the theme of ROBOT!

What started as my own little self-publishing anthology has grown into something much bigger, and I'm really proud of all the work involved. There are some truly brilliant artists, some better known than others, but there's genuinely something for everyone in this book and a load of artists you might wanna discover!

PLEASE support the book and spread the cause, word of mouth will be what keep this showcase for great new art going!

FAT CHUNK volume one is published by SLG Publishing. The diamond order code is MAR083402 (this is the code to tell your comic book store, so they can order it in). Alternatively, it's already on sale on amazon.com, and will be spreading into various online outlets and comic/book stores over time..

THANK YOU to every artist who's involved!

To see the full line-up, along with exclusive art and the roster for volume TWO, head along to FATCHUNKCOMIC.COM

or, check out these exclusive previews! (too small to read? buy the book! :p)

space monkeys
if you ever find yourself pitching ideas for a kids tv show to a network, chances are you're going to pitch a show about MONKEYS in SPACE. i say this, because everyone does it. everyone i know who has pitched for tv, has pitched a show about monkeys in space. i pitched a show called, wait for it, 'space monkeys'. and if you pitch this show to a tv executive, their response will be a weary groan followed by 'evvvvvveryone pitches monkeys in fucking space'.

this isn't because monkeys in space is a brilliant idea that we're all simultaneously having. it's because it's an EASY idea. why come up with an interesting new idea, after all, everyone likes monkeys, and everyone likes space, lets put 'em together, it writes itself!

it's pure laziness. it's no less than the jab-your-eyes-in-your-rectum-and-watch-your-colon-screaming death of creativity.

THEY MADE IT A FUCKING MOVE O_O

ps. anyone who reads these blogs will know the disdain i have for dreamworks cgi films, being as most of them are uninspired, ugly, woeful cliches churned out for the demographics. i'd rather eat a live pig's face. however, i will very happily concede my opinion, having just seen KUNG FU PANDA. beautiful, funny, and with charming characters, i think i'd like to hump it.
okay! diatribe against the cgi conveyor belt done! thanks for listening!

Warren Ellis on UBU BUBU 2

yeahhh...we can all do rommel jokes...

HEY! thank you to those who pointed this out to me, but UBU BUBU issue 2 has a new supporter in the very worthwhile guise of mister WARREN ELLIS, who sent out this recommendation...

"Listen, if you go to the comics shop tomorrow and you see a comic called UBU BUBU, by a guy called Jamie Smart, published by SLG (whose website seems to be down right now) -- FUCKING BUY IT.

"Um, mister cat? I have to go pee!"

"Nonsense, you can just go in the juice (jug) like I did. Unless you think you're better than me? Is that it? Fuckface? You're better than me?"

It's sort of like Marc Hempel's GREGORY, at the start -- but you realise, a couple of pages in, that Jamie Smart is British. Also, that Smart is several miles crazier than Hempel. Also, that not everyone can write a line like "Slap Rommel in the tits!"

Seriously. I actually hurt myself laughing at this. Find copies immediately."

thanks meeeester Ellis! what more commendation could you need? UBU BUBU 2 is out NOW! ^_^

ps. free bear comic posted up here tomorrow (not that bear).

file under F for awesome, the eleefunt tattoo!
i've seen alot of Bear-related tattoos, *most* of which were awesome. it's obviously always an incredible honour when someone decides they'd like something you've drawn on their skin, so i'm always humbled they'd choose my cross-eyed gubbins. but after i posted up the eleefunt on this journal, carlos's missus (actual name) tattooed it on his flesh like so...

so very cool, thanks carlos!

on another note, yes i know i should be emailing you back, sorry. on another note, tomorrow is new Whubble day! ^_^

kid telly!
yeah i am getting older, but i prefer to think i'm just getting righter. i bemoan childrens telly but be fair, it is just cheap doctor who spin-offs and fat-kid-plus-skinny-cool-kid-equals-KID-SITCOM-GOLD. yesterday i was entranced by an elderly gentleman in a mobility scooter trying to intimidate a mannequin but sarah saw the actual rude dog from rude dog and the dweebs, it just made me miss the shit i used to spend summer mornings watching instead of doing anything constructive like swimming or i dunno whatever it is well-adjusted kids do. since then i've been absent mindedly singing Ox Tales to the Duck Tales theme tune (ooh-woo-woo) like some kind of regressed mental. so anyway i just thought i'd post up the summer morning childrens television that i grew up with, in case it interests anyone or introduces anyone foreign-like to some great british kids tv (some of it is). course you had to sit through wacaday (and bravestar) to get to this stuff, but by 9.25 you were quids in.

Ox Tales! (ooh-woo-woo). had a monkey called gaylord. monkey. gaylord. it writes itself.

fucking Trap Door!

count duckula

samurai pizza cats!

dogtanian! get in! no pants!

yeah i know there's alot more, but this is all i can remember. i am of the humble belief the vast amounts of tv you watch as a kid really shape who you become, so thanks an f'ing lot eighties tv, you broke my brains. oh how can i stay mad at you. i love you.

what?

jx

ps. lastly, maybe i'm glad i didn't grow up before the eighties, if this was the shitting standard of nightmareish advertising O_O

molestor bunny.

it's a bunny, and it's got molestor on it's head. thats funny, innit. i should write comics.

i've been in a very weird funk the last few days. Working for The DFC has been hectic, the good, immensely enjoyable kinda hectic, but hectic nonetheless. You should really sign up for it. issue two's out tomorrow and not only is it a doozy, but my people in animal outfits are plastered around it (and air-licking you on the website). it's nice, the enthusiasm the people at the DFC have for my curious boggly-eyed stupidity, and having the work is obviously great. at the moment i have three different ongoing jobs for them all at once, with comissions for other work coming in all the time. these are busy days for jamie. he grumbles, but he likes it really.

but my brain is shutting itself down a bit. it's taken on the mantle of being not only very busy with work but making great strides to be sociable around that (something antisocial jamie isnt used to) very well, but i think i've worn the poor darling out. i'm concerned i've been a bit grumpy and curmudgeonly recently, i needed a coupla days with no contact with the outside world and just a few fun things to draw to readjust head meats. but still, i feel like there's too many thoughts in my head, that they're all just fuzzing together.

i guess moody antisocial jamie doesn't know what to do with himself, now it's been so long since he's been like that. i'm different to what i was a few months back. better, in some ways. i feel good, but i'm not used to feeling how i do, and it's getting to me.

does that make ANY sense?

no, of course it doesn't. because confused jamie makes less sense than normal jamie, especially when he's talking in the third person like a cockend. most of my days now are spent working till late, playing a little GTA to unwind, trying to unsuccessfully email, taking idiot emo myspace photos of myself and then sleeping.

this is an odd, ranting post, i know. most of my posts these days are 'look at this! i did it! it's here!', maybe i'm due a little livejournal breakdown around now.

somebody show me something funny or stupid. distract me. thank you x
