Quick FKO Post

Well - I had a great time. I have a paper (two papers really) to write so this will be rather "scrawled."

As always it was great to see friends old and new. And, as always, there were far too many people I didn't ever end up talking to really like [info]daisyknotwise or [info]kyttn or... well - lots of people! I did enjoy my traditional hair cut with [info]museinred not just because I always look so fabulous but also because it is a great time to just sit and chat and catch up with her. Likewise although they were really busy with the con I enjoyed the chance to sit and talk with [info]jhayman and Dave who had kindly let me crash in their sumptuous suite! :-) (thanks again!)

I was proud and sniffly and happy to watch 3 old friends (well 4 since Judith and Dave are a couple) get inducted into the Hall of Fame. I really do consider it a great honor and it makes me happy to see people get well deserved recognition.

I never made the open filking. At all! I assure you this was NOT by design. What happened was Friday I knew that I was going into the weekend tired and should pace myself or I'd be trashed for the Hall of Fame concert on Sunday which was one of my obligations so I went to bed early. Or, well, I *started* to bed early, like maybe 11ish (we'd arrived at 9:30 or something) and ultimately, by the time I'd talked, and wandered, and stopped at the consuite for a bite of dinner which I'd never had... well it was 1 am and then Judith came in and we talked a bit so didn't get to bed til 2! Then Saturday night after the auction got over I had promised to sing Lullabye for a Weary World for Michelle Sagara. (It's sort of a tradition because when I saw her more regularly she always asked me to sing it). But I didn't want to ruin the Hall of Fame concert so I tried to find a quiet corner. Tanya Huff had the lyrics and chords so she went to get them and we crossed paths, so by the time I found a corner and sang that plus a few others and had fun chatting (and got to hear [info]filker0 sing Caledonia and some others yay!) it was midnight and I was tired. So I decided, alas, to go to bed. Er yes, well... I started to bed but see, well, there was this little lobby filk with Dave Clement and Pete Grubbs and... to make a long story short I ended up going to bed around 5 am!!! YIKES! I haven't stayed up that late at a con in ages! Certainly not since rowan was born!

One of the highlights of Saturday was the Gospel choir that was mentioned on [info]ohiblather and [info]allisona's journals. When a soloist from the group did Amazing Grace but stopped after verse one I almost jumped in but decided it just wasn't a good idea but when Pete Grubbs asked for verse 2 and she said she didn't really know it I couldn't resist So I jumped in. I am told (though I honestly wasn't paying attention) that several of the gospel group were giving me approving stares. Mind you, the young woman who sang verse 1 did absolutely gorgeous gospel ornamentation and I'm sure mine was rather "white girl" but still... much fun!! Definitely the universal language! Many thanks to whichever kind soul gave me a CD! Greg McMullen handed one to me and said "it's an anonymous gift!" :-)

I managed to survive Sunday's concert. In spite of my total embarassment at realizing I'd been calling Lissa "Lis - sa" all these years and not only that - correcting people who called her "Lisa"!! Sigh. This, of course, became a running joke and, of course, like all good running jokes took on a life of its own. At the resteraunt later our waiter whose name badge said "some-persian-name-I=don't-remember" told us "but you can call me anything" Well, naturally he became "Lisa". Sigh. Good thing we tip well.

As always I enjoyed seeing [info]jhayman's daughter Jenn. And it's always wonderful to see [info]andpuff who is just so funny and charming and witty - just like her books! I especially enjoyed reaquainting myself with [info]msagara and her husband Tom. I'd forgotten how brilliant and caustically funny Michelle is and how patient and funny and kind Tom is. He even helped me do my math homework! (yay!!)

As always I loved doing the juried one shots and am glad that everyone seemed to find them useful/fun. I learn so much doing them too. One of these days I swear I'm going to partipate as well!

I had fun playing [info]peteralway's lego dulcimer! I'm still amazed that someone could make a lego dulcimer that really plays!!

Had fun talking with [info]unkbar and [info]billroper and [info]scs_11 (I wonder if I'll get all these lj names right?!) and agreed that A) I should really try to make a DI THing again when I have more money and B) I should try to hit the midwest cons again cause I really really miss people.

[info]jhayman did a good songwriting workshop which made me re-think writing songs. She focused on the song as short story. Interestingly I'd never though of *writing* a song that way yet when I *sing* them I think of them that way all the time! Funny isn't it? In spite of us being the most badly behaved class she could have gotten she did a great job! :-)

It was very nice to find some time to really talk with old friend [info]tarkrai and new friend [info]katyhh. I have liked Katy since I first met her and it was nice to sit and chat some. I think she and Steve will be very happy together through many years and look forward to watching them grow together. (and to the excuse to visit them in Germany some day! ;-)

It was great to hear [info]sexybass's girlfriend Marlene sing! She seems really nice and what a great voice! I hope they can find a way to be together more easily!

Another highlight of the weekend for me was the drive to and from. I got to spend time with [info]persis and [info]jslove who are dear friends and it was especially nice to get to know [info]maedbh7 (added you to friends list!) and [info]happyfunpaul (aka: happyfunpope a victim of sleep deprevation...) more. I really enjoyed talking to them both. It was very cathartic to talk about Iain with Paul. Hugs. And it was great to talk about sex and children and parenting and relationships and housework and... with Heather. ("Mom will you hold my Woody?" sighhhhh) Clearly we need to organize a wenchcon East! :-)

Ah there's so much I could say - but I'll get to those papers now and just say:
It was wonderful and I just wish I could do it more! I can't wait til we're more solvent again and can come to more cons.

Lots and lots of hugs to you, Mew. And thanks for everything on Sunday.

Er, how about one in three? I'm actually unkbar which, of course, comes from "Uncle Bear" and is the name of a barbarian fighter I played in D&D. Also scs11 should be scs_11.

Nitpicking over, it was GREAT to chat with you at FKO. It had been far, far too long. You probably don't live any farther from us than when you were in Michigan, but it feels farther. I still have hopes of someday meeting this mysterious "Ed" person you talk about!

Oops, see what happens when I am too lazy to check my flist? ;-) Duly changed.

I'll let you know if we manage a "music weekend" here at "camp". I think you'd have a great time talking with Ed. I think it's only maybe 6 hours to Rochester from Burlington? The ferry from NY to Charlotte is really close to camp so that's the way to go probably (or at least the scenic way to go!) :)

It was great to see you again! And I especially enjoyed seeing you in the middle of that impromptu hotel lobby sing. You were a LARGE part of the reason that turned into a mass singfest, y'know...when you picked up the second verse, it changed the "let's take turns" dynamic into a "hey, here's a song we all know!" dynamic.

THANK YOU so much for that. :-)

ps You may want to fix my LJ link (you put "ohiblatherings" and it should be "ohiblather") else people will find a broken page.

I didn't want to seem like I was taking over at first but when Pete conveniently *asked* for the second verse and she said she didn't know it, well, all bets were off! And yes, I absolutely loved hearing all those diverse voices together! Bliss.

It was cool that you passed out all the shakers and stuff though. Also, I think you were the one who really started talking to them. Probably if you hadn't we wouldn't have known they were a choir and said "sing for us!" ;-)
(fixed the link! Oops).

Hee hee - you're right, I don't think we'll ever get away from that. But really, don't stress about it - we've just never really spent that much time talking (kind of snatches in places, much like this weekend) and I've long since ceased to be bothered by people who pronounce it the way it looks like it *ought* to be pronounced. But hey, now I know there's a whole con's worth of people who are unlikely to get it wrong!

Good to see you again - maybe next time we see each other we'll manage to fit in a longer chat too!

well, that's true! I bet no one who was at FKO this year will ever pronounce your name wrong again! :-)

I just wonder if the poor waiter will still be nicknamed Lisa? ;-)

oH - and yes, I do hope one of these times we can sit and just talk! By the way, both the musical toy and the socks are a huge hit! I even let the kids play with the musical toy! :-)

Unnaturally generous of you *g*. Glad the socks went down well - Alex likes his too, and of course Phil and I are big suckers for fun clothing of that ilk. Plain t-shirts etc are a rarity in Alex's wardrobe, and might well have all come from in-laws various.

I might have to try to order some more from you! The boys have refused to wear any other socks now for two days running. They've also insisted on sleeping in them. I told them I'd wash them out by hand so they'd have them tomorrow. Sigh... We do have some cool socks like bat socks from Mammoth Cave and Train socks but clearly nothing compares to T-Rex. ;-)

Heh - I would if I could but Phil got them in the January sales and I strongly doubt there are any still available. Still, I'll keep my eyes open for dinosaur socks because you never know :-)

Maybe it'll cure him of telling people to call him anything! Always a risky thing to say, though of course the risk does increase exponentialy in the presence of filkers. We have one over here nicknamed Snowdrop after a similarly rash statement...

Snowdrop!?? The mind boggles.

I think one of my favorite moments was a flippant (I think) comment from you when I said that "British Filkers are too polite" and you said "No, it's the Canadians that are polite, we're evil, we're just quiet!" Hee.

It has a long and honourable fannish history. Ninja (one of our close filking but non-performing friends) has a brother who's been in fandom for ever and who normally goes by the nickname Square Bear. When Ninja joined fandom some people tried to call him Baby Bear and he told them 'No, absolutely not, anything but that'. A particularly evil friend suggested Snowdrop and after spluttering a bit Ninja told her she could call him that but anybody else who tried it would be toasted lightly over an open fire.

Many years later a newbie at one of the Eastbourne cons wrote in FilkUK that he thought he needed a fannish nickname and could anyone make any suggestions, anything would do. So feeling evil I suggested Snowdrop and it stuck a lot more effectively than it did with Ninja.

So you see, we are evil. And quiet. Except when we're being Phoenix.

I was there at the time and, to my knowledge at least, she only referred to him as Snowdrop *once*.... just to make the point.

Gytha, as I recall, nearly fell over laughing when she heard about it.

Thanks for the report, mew. What did the lego dulcimer sound like when you played it?

I'm not an expert on dulcimers, but it sounds pretty. Pretty enough that my stepson and wife want to investigate getting a dulcimer. If you want to read about the dulcimer, including a link to some sound of it, visit [info]peteralway's web site at http://members.aol.com/petealway/Lego-dulcimer.htm

Thanks for the links. I think I'd heard a sound file of it in action, but having sung with mew in the past and seen her play dulcimer in person (and knowing a bit about her musical sensibilities) I was interested in her take on what it sounded/felt like in the moment. Of course, she might have been totally fried when she played it and has zero reliable brain cells with which to convey her experiences in detail.

All completely reasonable, and I'm curious to know what someone who knows more about dulcimers than I do thought of it. We can hope that mew had a few brain cells left :-)

Well - Dave commented that it was rather like the "Dancing dog - it's not how well the dog dances, it's that it can dance at all!". :-)
But seriously, it was fun to play. Very quiet. It took some getting used to - it takes a very light touch, once I got used to that though it was not bad! I asked Peter if he couldn't make the frets lower and he commented that the bumps would get in the way and we kibbitzed on ways around that (some others standing by and I). One suggestion included using flat un-bumpy tiles on the fretboard in between the actual frets.

I was quite impressed that anyone could make a dulcimer out of legos that is actually playable at all to be honest! I'm not going to switch to it as my instrument (grin) but still, pretty neat.

Great report, mew! It was great seeing you, even if I didn't get to spend a lot of time with you.

You certainly did just fine jumping in on verse 2 of "Amazing Grace" - that was lots and lots of fun.

The juried one shots were also terriffic. I really enjoyed listening to the people who sang, the comments from the jury, and the audience members. I learned a lot, too.

Thanks! I love doing them. I always feel like I wish I had an hour with each person cause there's so much I'd like to say and try with them. Tanya suggested auctioning off a private "juried one shot" where I'd reserve an hour to work on a song with someone. (I suppose this might be called a voice lesson really! ;-)

Hey :) Just a quick note to let you know I chatted with [info]catya about Mosaic. She assures me that the informational meetings are about 20 mins of newbie stuff you'll both be bored with, but that the remaining two hours or so of the meeting is all nuts and bolts about where they are now within the whole process and that you would probably find most of the information you'd be looking for in that chunk of it.

Other Mosaic LJ's to follow: [info]shayde, [info]qwrrty, and [info]keyne

I also spoke with [info]sunspiral about the party, and I'll be forwarding the invite along as soon as it comes out. Remember to bring the kids. See you soon :) -H...

Thanks for the tips! I contacted Catya and asked her about the next meeting, looks like it will be May 15 ish. So I'm thinking we'll come and find someone to stay with (she offered for example). I'll "friend" the other Mosaic members. THanks. I think you'd love cohousing. Are you considering it too?
Oh and btw - got some suggestions of alternative/holistic schools in the greater Boston area from my Prof, but don't have yer email. mine is mew AT mewsic DOT com. So you email me and I'll email you! ;-)
mew PS that's a really pretty icon! :-)
