| | shocked | ] | My brother in law, the last true American Imperialist©, has decided he is going to vote a straight Democratic ticket as of this morning.
He's been voting straight Republican since Reagan's second term, I think.
Now it's a pretty decent bet I'll vote D in a given election, but it's not a given... I was voting for Senator John Warner(R-VA) ever since I was old enough, partly because I respected his integrity despite differences of opinion and later because he did a favor for our family. In all fairness, I voted for Chuck Robb at the same time, so the two sorta balanced each other out. But this is Virginia, where Reagan's former Secretary of the Navy is a Democrat. We're a weird state. One of the last to have laws against oral sex on the books yet use "Virginia is for Lovers" as a slogan, and our flag has a bared (female) breast.
This is just too weird. |

| | contemplative | ] | First day at work in a long time I didn't feel like someone was standing behind me ready to hit me over the head with something. Also had the sad realization my life over the past few weeks... well, month, actually, the downturn started just after vacation, but anyway, realized my life could be summed up by two Wilson Phillips songs. Eeep. I'd rather have Ultra by KMFDM and Closer by NIN.
Benching 195 again... didn't even realize it until I counted the plates. I've just been throwing on a little more every few weeks without actually counting. 210 was my best, at this rate I may hit it by the end of the year again. Not bad for someone who wasn't able to even exercise between January and April. Maybe once I go to the day shift I'll be able to really work on things and do that +15 pounds project my brother challenged me to.
Watched Borat yesterday. Um... not sure if I loved it or hated it. Maybe both.
Also watched two of my "classics", The Lost Boys and Pump Up the Volume. Now I'm listening to the soundtracks, even if PUtV doesn't have the original Cohen version of "Everybody Knows" that was in the movie. I also still want a Jeep CJ-7 like the one in that movie... not really feasible with gas prices, but maybe one day I'll have one as an antique to tinker with in the back yard. |

| | amused | ] | Had one of those door-to-door evangelists show up on my doorstep at 9 this morning. Unlike most of the Mormons(or whoever uses the teenagers), this one was a reasonably attractive brunette in her late 20s/early 30s.
Only reason I even heard her knock was lately I've been waking up around 8-9 am four or five hours after going to bed. I usually get a glass of red tea, lay on the couch for a few minutes while drinking it, and then go back upstairs to get some more sleep. So I was stretched out on the couch half-awake, in my boxer briefs, sipping my tea when she knocked. She could haven't seen me from the door window and she was looking around behind her when I peeped over the edge of the couch to see who it was. I could see the bible she had tucked under her arm so I knew she wasn't from UPS or the post office.
I thought about actually inviting her in as-is just for lulz, but settled for wrapping a conveniently nearby towel around my waist, opening the door with a drowsy expression and saying "I'm sorry darlin', I'm not in any position to engage in a debate right now."
Her eyes flicked down for a moment... whether in hope or horror that I might not have anything on I couldn't tell. She gave me a half smile, apologized, and immediately departed. With that taken care of, I finished off the rest of my tea, brushed my teeth and went back to bed.
What, you were expecting anything else? ^_^
If it had actually been a little bit later when I was getting up for real, I would have loved to invite her in for a chat. I have a copy of The Portable Atheist (with foreword by the man, the legend, the drunk himself, Christopher Hitchens) in the bathroom for idle reading. It would have made for some good ammo to point/counterpoint with. Plus I could have finally asked someone intent on converting me the two big questions:
1) What proof can you offer that your specific deity exists as opposed to another one or none at all?
2) If you can't prove he/she/it exists, why should you expect me to be obligated to follow their dictates? |

Strangely enough, the pharmacy called at first to say "your insurance company wants verification", then filled it *anyway* a few days later(so I assumed it had been approved), but when I went to call the doctor the next day to tell them no, there was a message on the phone from her saying it had been denied by the insurance company and she'd phoned in the old school stuff.
So we'll see how that goes starting this weekend, and then in a month maybe add Zoloft or increase the doseage. Not looking forward to the libido surge with a lack of candidates(damn outsourcing for more than just employment issues! >_<) but maybe this time we can find a dose that will get me out of this slump without making me wired. |

| | geeky | ] | All in one SATA/USB/Memory Card dock.
Already got my archives on an SATA drive, 1 TB drives are now relatively cheap, and a dock would be much better than an enclosed drive because it'd be faster to grab the drive from in case of an emergency and easier to hide if I ever have company I suspect might be of the snooper variety. It'll also cut back on the cables I need for my digital camera and mp3 player, and I can plug my bluetooth USB dongle into it.
I also need a decent printer that a) doesn't clog up if you go a couple of weeks without using it and b) takes separate CMYK cartridges, Epson seems to clog if you so much as breath on one and Lexmark is crap for picture quality. I just want to occasionally print out a few things on regular paper and once in a great while on photo gloss. Epsons seem to do great on all sorts of paper with the proper settings but they dry up way too fast if you don't constantly use them.
And with fall/winter coming up, I would like a good coat... after trying a cheapass Target winter coat with fur lined hood, I've come to really like the fur lined hoods but I need something that isn't going to rip after a month of wearing(as did the Target one. |

Can someone point me to an easily printable source for John McCain's stances on issues? Trying to do a "presentation"* for my dear old gran this weekend, and while Obama's got an all-in-one PDF file to work from, so far McCain's site seems to be lacking one and I don't have time to print each page individually.
For that matter, anyone know how to print that PDF in large type or one page to a page, instead of the two pages in landscape mode?
*Yeah, short of Obama having a love child skeleton in his closet, I'm voting for him, but I know my gran has different priorities so I feel obligated to give her both sides. Oddly enough, I've already had to defend his POW days to her, someone at one of the churches she attends compared him to Hanoi Jane. |

From someone named Pocketninja in a financial discussion:
Sure. Everyone talks about saving money and fiscal responsibility and all that, but nobody really talks about how hard it is, or how expensive it can end up being. I mean, when I was just starting out, my business professor told us all that one of the best things we could do to ensure our financial stability into the future was to have only one credit card, and then freeze it into a big block of ice. That way, anytime we wanted to make a big-ticket purchase, we'd be forced to contemplate it while we worked at getting the credit card unfrozen. "Mark my words," he said. "Most of the time, you won't even get halfway to it before you realize that you don't really need what you were thinking about buying."
Well, that made sense to me. The only problem was that I didn't have a refrigerator. So I had to go out and buy one, and damn if those things aren't expensive. So I was really happy I hadn't frozen my credit card yet and used it to buy this really awesome fridge/freezer combo with the ice cube dispenser in the door. I didn't really need the ice cube dispenser in the door, but I figured that if I was going to have my credit card in a block of ice, I wouldn't have much room left in the freezer for ice trays. So it made sense.
But then I didn't have anywhere to put the freezer. It was too big for the room I was renting. So I needed to buy a house. So I went to the bank and got my mom to co-sign on this awesome loan that didn't even need any money down and would have really low payments for like two years. And I knew that I'd be working by then and would be making good money, so that didn't worry me at all.
Then I needed something to transport my freezer in. I would have just rented a truck, but I figured that, you know, I'd be needing a car to get around and look for jobs and stuff. I thought about buying a used truck, but then I was like, you know, I don't want to buy someone else's problem. So I bought this biatchin' F-150 and got a pretty good rate from the dealer and didn't have to put anything down, either. They were really cool.
So I put my freezer in the truck and drove it to my townhouse and then realized I needed electricity to make a block of ice but they were mean at the electric company and wanted like a two month deposit and I didn't have any money, so I had to use my credit card again for that and thank God it wasn't frozen yet.
Then I needed a bucket to make a block of ice in, so I got in my truck and went to Target, and while I was there I figured, you know, I should probably buy some other things a house needs like cleaning supplies and food and toilet paper and towels and an XBox 360 and a few games. And boy, I don't know how I'd have bought all that stuff if I'd already frozen my credit card, but I guess someone was looking out for me.
So I took all my new stuff home and took it inside and poured water in the bucket and put the credit card in the water and put it all in the freezer and it was frozen solid by the next morning. And then a few days later I was out of food. And I went to get my credit card but it was frozen, and damn if I couldn't get it out of that block of ice. And I waited a while like the professor had said but it didn't make me want food any less. Heck, I wanted it more. And I got the block of ice out and took it out to the walk and picked it up over my head and threw it down on the sidewalk, but it just chipped a little so I tried again and this time it landed on my foot and I broke it. My foot, I mean. And I got taken to the hospital in the ambulance with my block of ice and it finally melted which was good because holy Christ hospitals are expensive. And by the time I got home I was realizing that this whole financial planning thing really sucks, because now my credit card is maxed and my bucket is cracked and I can't drive my truck because my foot's broken and how am I supposed to find a job?
Maybe I'll buy a computer and get that Quicken software. I heard it helps you track spending and stuff. Maybe that's what I need. |
