3:57 pm - final?
|
so i started FF4 DS last night.
it's weird. FF4 is a candidate for my favorite game ever -- so playing a remake is just a bit bizarre to me. i don't know how to react.
also, though i've only played an hour, i think that in many ways it doesn't feel like an FF game; there's a definite flavor of the developer matrix there. it reminds me in small ways of the general state of the world for PS1 RPGs. things like the interface, visual design choices, and the difficulty level just seem not-quite-FF to me.
it's a shame that it's on the DS, in my mind, as that's hardly the best place for traditional games done in 3D, even amongst the portable options, but it's a good-looking game, of course, for what it is.
i can't decide if it's something i'll continue playing or not. i love FF4, and i suppose that the GBA version (which i played through) was sort of the ultimate version of FF4-as-it-was.
hrm.
i guess the fact that i care enough to think about these sorts of things implies a lot.
on that note, i read through the japan issue of EGM just now. really entertaining. it's like the first issue of a games mag in a while where i felt like more than two consecutive pages contained shit i cared about, and i'm not kidding. again, that implies a lot about me, i suppose.

i am watching BSG3 now. that show is like delicious candy. in every sense of the word.
it has no nutritional content, and it doesn't stay with you, but it's compulsively delicious.

i think the wifi coverage at gamefest just sucks. i finally sat in for a session in the magical room that has flawless wifi. i think i've just been struggling with bullshit, and there's nothing wrong with my PC... though i am not fully convinced yet!
i am wondering if the super huge uptake of iPhone is affecting wifi at events like this that have free wifi - if everyone is just sticking their phones onto it and sucking up the bandwidth

10:12 pm - omg internets
|
so i am really worried that my laptop's wifi is crapping out. i'll have to do tests when i get back to sf. the problem is that the networks i am trying to access may be overloaded / badly configured / whatever so i can't be sure till i do tests ... examples
- couldnt connect to press internet at E3 (but there were a mllion peple trying) - couldn't connect to the free MS wifi at gamefest except for at the end of the day (but it may be function of the room location or overloaded network) - couldn't maintain a usable connection with the wifi in the hotel (which only works in the lobby, and the hotel is ghetto crap) so i dunno. i really hope not, cos i figure the only solution will be new laptop at that point. ugh.
now i must return to my wifi free room. my room is supposed to have wired internet but it does not. right now i am stealing the ethernet cable from the pay internet kiosk in the hotel lobby because they can't really see me from the front desk.

5:31 pm - スチームボーイ
|
i just finished watching steamboy for the first time.
last night after i got home from the airport, tired as hell, i decided to watch akira to unwind. i hadn't watched it for a couple of years. something about the dark knight made me want to watch it, though i am hard-pressed to come up with any sort of elegant theory as to what that is; something about the tone.
i really enjoyed akira, of course, again, and found myself able to observe it with something of a fresh perspective and notice a few little things. but i don't have any exciting insights, there, either.
this afternoon i decided i wanted to watch a DVD and, really, i wanted to watch akira again, almost. but i decided instead to finally throw in steamboy.
steamboy came out in 2005 in the US, and i missed it in its brief theatrical run. rumors about its production problems culminated in a lack of hype or positive reviews, and it didn't last long. i ended up buying the DVD, which came out in 2005 as well -- july 26, according to amazon -- and never watched it. it was hard to get excited about a movie from otomo that nobody seemed to like. i guess i didn't want to find out for myself that it wasn't that good.
well, it's got problems. i am not sure what to even say about it. it shares a number of themes with akira but doesn't seem to present them in a particularly compelling way; it's a bit more difficult to wrap your head around a completely fictionalized take on victorian england than it is on futuristic tokyo -- or it is for me, anyway. i'm just sat there going "but this isn't possible" most of the time.
from a production standpoint, it's a pretty astounding film, with great production design, animation, and artwork. there's nothing to impugn in that regard. but the story is overlong, falls flat, has weak characterization and takes a really long time to get up to steam (ha ha.) somehow steamboy crosses some lines; it's boring about its presentation of its main themes, it's dissatisfying from an action or visual perspective despite being pretty amazingly well-produced, and it's just not compelling from a story perspective.
it's sad to say, but in the end, it defines a rental. metropolis, which otomo wrote and which was directed by rintaro, is much tighter and more satisfying.

i just got back from LAX and i am so tired. we spent today in downtown disney / disneyland hotel, eating lunch, shopping, lying by the pool and watching OMFG the dark knight. that movie was A+++ triplegood will see again and i am sure you either know that already or someone on your friends list has told you in better detail than my wrung-out brain can manage right now.
all of my E3 expense report receipts are still damp from splash mountain yesterday, so i've just taken them out and laid them out all over my desk to dry.
