Well, I started out writing a story of Padmé coming to Tatooine again after TPM, trying and failing to buy Shmi, and then talking to her for awhile, during which time she learned a bit about Shmi's culture, and found the basis for Leia's name (I would have done Luke's later). It was Padmé looking for the honorific I was asking about. But I realized as I wrote it that the whole thing was likely to be nothing but a frame for a story I started two or three years ago on the TFN forums and never finished, and that was the story I really meant to tell. So I'm going to post what I had of that (in digestable sections, I hope), and maybe later write a frame where Padmé learns at least parts of it. Telos of Crion is from Jude Watson's JA books, in which his son, Xanatos, was Qui-Gon's first padawan. EDIT IN: I've added chapter 1 above, and will keep track of the story at the Table of Contents. Shoot. I find there was a reason that I never finished "Beggar's Canyon." I'm lousy at writing races. I'll still work on it. I will eventually finish the four Luke stories to mirror the four Leia stories in Father's Heart, of which "Beggar's Canyon," in which Luke is almost arrested by the Empire for illegal Skyhopper racing (Ben saves him before certain names percolate up through Imperial law enforcement), was to be the third. But not today. I just don't feel like a Skyhopper race today. I'm more in a mood to write about Anakin and Obi-Wan, ya know? I don't understand why you're supposed to like one or the other, or think that one is totally right and the other is totally wrong (and trust me, both have their partisans). The tragedy of their relationship was that it was mismatched--they simply didn't understand each other at all, and worse, they thought they did, so they never fixed it. So, I'll start from scractch. ( Learning Curve )Eh, not great. But it felt pretty good to slip back into Jedi-land. Tags: sw fics I feel a bit...: cheerful Soundtrack: TPM Soundtrack

I was so good this morning. I didn't even need to come in, and I gave an hour of my time to cover a tour since we're short-staffed. I'm generous to a fault. It does leave me with a couple of hours to kill before my actual shift, though, so I figured, hey--write for one of them. sjepstein e-mailed me a challenge, which wasn't quite within my parameters, but seeing as I've crashed at his place while job interviewing, that's cool. It's not based on any fic of mine (but will probably tie in), but on conversations about the subject. We both rather strongly suspect that Obi-Wan knew exactly who he was hiring in Mos Eisley, and sjepstein suggested that I write a prior meeting. It takes place not long after Ep 3. (FYI, I don't read the EU--I've tried four books, and that's quite enough, thanks--and have no clue what they say about Han's childhood, so obviously, that will play no part. I'm a movies-only girl, as far as canon is concerned.) Start 11:36. ( Fighter )End 12:37 Tags: sw fics

And still more challenge fic. :) "The Smart One" is a Star Wars story in which Vader, in the hopes of finding artistic representations of Padmé, calls for her old friend Palo, the artist, who she mentioned to him in the field scene. Palo goes to Vader's home and admires his art collection, but only has one piece of artwork which is related to Padmé, a clay mask. Vader buys his entire collection just to get it, and when Palo leaves, Vader is simply staring up at the mask. Palo, who has been having trouble painting ever since Naboo was decimated by Palpatine, goes home and does a light painting showing Vader, young Ani, and Padmé, but without understanding what exactly he's painted, he understands that there is a truth he can't tell, and where there are truths that he can't tell, he can't be an artist anymore. He destroys the light painting. volandum wanted to know about how he came to write the work I used a paragraph of as an epigraph. Here's the paragraph: When I was a child, I challenged my teacher to tell me why the graceful spires built by the gamuna birds on Naboo were not art. "Art," he told me, "is never accidental, never a byproduct of more useful projects. Art is created by the intention to create it. There may be beauty in the products of the beasts, but it is not intended. Without sentience, there can be no art." I accepted this as I grew up, and living in the pragmatic and utilitarian galaxy we've been given, I have discovered an even more disturbing truth: Sentience is not inevitable, nor is it permanent. Sentience is a matter of meaning to create. There may be intelligence in our current designs, and there may be some minor truth, but it is meaningless. Without art, there can be no sentience. - Palo Torezi From Eulogy for the Arts I have a vague idea for this. Let's see how it works out. Start 11:53 ( Rebellion )End 12:56 Tags: sw fics

In my previous post (and feel free to keep adding challenges), I asked for hour-fic challenges--anyone who wanted another scene for a story of mine, go for it. chenin asked for a fic based on Old Friends, Long Gone, a Star Wars story in which the Skywalker twins, the day after the battle of Endor, meet the aged General Jar Jar Binks, who tells them a story about the scourging of Naboo, during which Vader allowed the escape of large numbers of Gungans, sacrificing the city of Theed to distract the stormtroopers from their genocide. Leia isn't really ready to hear these stories yet--lots of emotional baggage--which irritates Luke, but Jar Jar refuses to tell the stories to them separately, and promises that he will tell more when he deems Leia ready. chenin asked for the next story Jar Jar would tell. I didn't promise that it would be a Vader story, though. Start 1:32 a.m. ( Flying )End 2:37 Tags: sw fics
