Okay. Back to work. Detectives found a body, a young girl in a cloak. A witness heard "Avada Kedavra." Kingsley (during OotP year) is in New York following a lead on Yaxley, and happens on the scene. He contacts NYC magical law enforcement, who tell him that they more or less have to leave it in Muggle hands under local law. The victim is identified as the daughter of Caradoc Dearborn, whose disappearance turns out to have been escaping into Muggle society when he fell in love with a Muggle girl during the last war. His wife was killed years ago, and now his daughter, Delia, is gone. Kingsley and the local law enforcement guy come to the interrogation, and Kingsley ends up staying. Meanwhile, local guy (Antonio) and the local witch prosecutor, Sophie Liebowitz, have to go see Adam Schiff (who's in on everything) to figure out how to go about prosecutin a magical case that happened in the middle of Grand Central. Sophie's not pleased to have Kingsley on board, and the local magical council is apparently obsessed with lack of justice under Barty Crouch, Sr, and won't want to extradite.

Emerald brooch with names on the back: Names include Neville Longbottom's gran. Left in British Museum when the Feather of Maát was stolen; in the past, worn by Mertysa Marvolo.

Characters:
Neville Longbottom: Sent into the past by accident; ordered by Kingsley Shacklebolt to retrieve the Feather and bring it back so it doesn't get stolen in the first place, because Bellatrix has it.
Marion Ravenwood: Found the Feather on a dig with Dad. Is having having some self-esteem issues after a rendevous with a certain achaeology student has wrecked her reputation. Attaches herself to Neville because he's nice to her.
Mertysa Marvolo and Tom Riddle: Fashionable young couple in the 1920s, who are planning to steal the Feather. Riddle is unaware that his best girl is a witch. Neville has noticed that she's not carrying a wand.

Last event: Mertysa tried to steal the Feather, but Neville got it away from her. He and Marion have locked themselves in a basement. He tried to get back, but Bellatrix blocked the way. He has to explain to Marion what he needs to do. She's annoyed with him for trying to steal from her dad, but agrees to help him get out, because Bella spooked her. But she insists that he talk to her.

Okay. So far, Neville has found out that a magical artifact, the Feather of Maát, which was stolen in the 1920s from a rich man's home, was re-stolen by Voldemort and the DEs. It was replaced with a brooch that had his grandmother's name on the back. Bella shows up and attacks, accusing Gran of betraying the Heir of Slytherin. Neville is pushed through a portal and ends up in the 1920s at the rich man's home, during a party. Kingsley Shacklebolt tells him that he's gotten permission to have Neville steal the Feather and bring it back. Meanwhile, Neville meets Marion Ravenwood, the daughter of the archaeologist who found the Feather in the first place. Marion is having a rough time--rumors that she's loose have spread, and men are bothering her. Neville gets her away from one of them, and they start to spend the evening together, Marion filling Neville in about the artifacts. Meanwhile, another couple is present: Tom Riddle and Mertysa Marvolo. Mertysa seems to recognize that Neville is somewhat out of his element. When everyone sits down for dinner, Neville recognizes that she is wearing the brooch that has Gran's name on the back of it.

Okay, back to the nineteen-twenties.

In part one, Neville came home on his birthday to find Bill Weasley and Kingsley Shacklebolt talking to his grandmother. An Egyptian artifact, the Feather of Maát, which has magical powers, was stolen from the British Museum and prominently replaced with a brooch that had Mrs. Longbottom's maiden name on the back (it had been given to a teacher whose name she no longer remembers when she was a child). The item had been sold to the museum in the 1930s; it had been missing for ten years after being stolen from a home Gran doesn't recognize when Kingsley opens a magical window to show it to her. The window is still open when Bella, wearing the Feather, leads two other DEs in an attack, during which Neville falls through and lands in the grass outside the house. Kingsley closes the window.

I did this obsessively for nearly five minutes. But I had to stop at Huck and Hermione. I like it, in the weirdest possible way. I am going to spend tomorrow both cleaning my room and working on my NaNo novel (I wrote longhand until my fingers cramped at lunch, so I don't feel guilty; I just haven't typed it in and counted up), but for now, what the Huck? I've never done Twain fanfic, and I think my time in Hermione's head has been severely limited, if I ever wrote her at all.
