Putting things in perspective

Dreaming
Hey all-- got news yesterday that just devastated me personally, since the individual is a friend of mine-- was in fact, standing there with me when I got the call in Reno and is just a genuinely nice, sweet person, author Marianne Mancusi. Anyhow, Marianne returned home late Sunday from Reno only to find that her home had been struck by lightning while she was out of town and burned to the ground. Luckily, her dog was with her mother, so there is that silver lining, but otherwise, Marianne pretty much lost everything, including all her books, a loss made all the more difficult because she didn't have renter's insurance.

UPDATE
Marianne sent us some pictures and it's just... well, she's holding up WAY better than I would.

Pictures are worth more than a thousand words

As fellow authors, we know how important a writer's library is, so the Literary Chicks have begun a book drive for Marianne, as well as posted an address to which to send the books and any gift certificates people might feel compelled to give.

Repeating the address here:

Marianne Mancusi
PO BOX 8003
Boston, MASS 02114

They're also organizing an ebay auction, so if you have critique services that you'd be willing to donate, please contact Lani Diane Rich at lani@literarychicks.com.

What I'm asking everyone to do, is if you're sending Marianne books, could you PLEASE list what books you're sending in MY comments section for this entry so we can try to avoid duplicates as much as possible. I'll even start. :-)

Please, anyone who can help, time, books, gift cert., it would be much appreciated. Marianne is truly one of the good guys.

Barb

ANOTHER UPDATE- 08/04/05

From Marianne, herself including a possible book list.

I'm hanging in. It's all like some bad nightmare. But I'm just telling myself it's just stuff. You know? It can be replaced. Molly's okay and I'm okay and that's all that matters. Still, it's very surreal to know that I could have (should have even!) died this week.

Anyway - Alesia said I was supposed to send you book info. It's funny cause a friend of mine had recently made me make up a top 20 book list (non romance) and so I'm just sending you that! I also of course like chick lit and romance - especially paranormal, futuristic, vampire, etc. Christine Feehan, Katie MacAlister, Susan Grant, Jennifer Cruisie, Kim Harrison, Lyndsay Sands, Laurell K. Hamilton, Diana Gabaldon, etc. etc.

ANY Arthurian Legend related books.

I also lost all my research books of the 1920s which I was using for writing my 20s time travel. And my entire (extensive (cry!)) DVD collection so I wouldn't turn down movies. :)

Anyway - here's my non-romance top 20 list. :) I'd pretty much take any book by any of these authors. :)

Thanks sooo much for organizing this!
MAr

1) Mists of Avalon - Marion Zimmer Bradley - Fantasy (or ANY MZB books)

My Pile & A Suggestion
I'm sending from my collection:

Nonfiction:

Rip-off by Fay Faron
Spice by Jack Turner
The Medieval Castle by Philip Warner
Description by Monica Wood

Fiction:

Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
Tales of O. Henry (62 of them)
Origin in Death by Nora Roberts

Also a money order, to be used as Marianne needs.

Suggestion: Could she put together a book wish list? Amazon.com might be good, so people can direct-order and not duplicate.

My contribution
I won an Amazon gift certificate in a contest a while back and it's been on my desk since then. Every once in a while I go to amazon.com and try to decide how to spend it and can't make up my mind. After reading about Marianne, my decision was made for me. The certificate is in an envelope addressed to Marianne and ready to go out in tomorrow's mail.

Barb, this is a great idea. I've ordered and am sending the following books as soon as they come in from Amazon. I remember reading on Marianne's website how much she had loved the Rosalind Miles trilogy and had just finished reading the third one. I'm assuming those books were also in the home. :-(

"The World of King Arthur," by Christopher Snyder
"The Child of the Holy Grail," by Rosalind Miles
"Guenevere, Queen of the Summer Country," by Rosalind Miles
"The Knight of the Sacred Lake," by Rosalind Miles

I will see if they would like a Tarot reading for the auction and put in some. I will also get her an Amazon gift certificate. I can't even imagine. I also live near a fabulous used bookstore and would be happy to scour for some of the harder to find stuff once we have that list together. Sorry I didn't get a chance to connect with you at Reno!~

This is just awful. My heart goes out to Marianne!!

I'll send The Chronicles of Narnia. I have an extra set of the "new" edition where the book numbers are out of whack; that drives me nuts, but hopefully Marianne won't mind. And while I notice that Katherine Neville's THE EIGHT isn't on the list, based on the stuff that *is* there I think it would be well received. So I'll send that, too.

There's also a PetCo gift card on the way for Molly. Poor puppy!!

I have some school discards of Lloyd Alexander's:

The First Two Lives of Lukas-Kasha

and the first three books of the Chronicles of Prydain.

They are in great shape I was getting ready to donate them...so I will just pull them out of the box and pass them on to Marianne.

If she gets duplicates of this one in newer status, she can just pass this group along again.

Found out about Marianne's plight through Gabrielle Luthy's weblog...diary of a runaway adult.

Books For Marianne
Hi!

I just heard about the fire which destroyed Marianne's home. Oh, my goodness. I simply can't imagine what she's going through.

I'll be sending her Douglas Adams' THE ULTIMATE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (five novels in one volume)--#24 on her request list.

I'll also donate a signed copy of my medieval historical romance DANCE OF DESIRE for the auction.

Kudos to Barb, Alesia, Lani and everyone else organizing this fundraiser.

Best,

book for Marianne
Hey, Barb. I'm going to send Marianne a copy of my novel, Sword Across Time. Since it has an Arthurian theme, I think she'd be interested. I don't think anyone will duplicate this one, but let me know if someone has. Of course, the copy I send will be autographed and be accompanied with one of my bookmarks. :-) I'm also on my way over to e-bay to check out the auction. I'm sure there's one or two things there that I'll find interesting to bid on.
