DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK THIS PERSON IS SECRETLY RELATED TO KATE CAPPS? i don't think she looks just like her, i just think that maybe kate has two sisters named emily and this is the other one. the picture doesn't reflect it as much as scenes from the show.

you just think about that while i walk to 7-11.

reijigin, posting in austincommunity @ 6:18pm: What to do with old letters?
I went to Uncommon Objects today and found a set of fifteen letters sent from a woman in Gainesville to her soldier husband, all postmarked in 1945. Unfortunately she wrote on both sides of the paper and so some parts of some letters are rather difficult to read.

So... Partly I want to find out who these people were (maybe they have family here still?) and partly I want to be able to actually read them all. I'm sure there's a way to look up some family history, I just don't know where to start. I also don't know how to handle/store the letters to keep them in good shape... And I don't know any tricks to reading blurred letters or telling which side of the paper some ink is on. I just found them and had to have them because I was fascinated, but now I don't know where to start investigating. Are there any groups who are into stuff like this? Any particular place I can look for their family tree or anything like that?

Also, for anyone else who is interested, they told me they get old letters a lot. There are also tons of old photos with the names written on the back and the photography company embossed on them. There's even a set of black and white proofs from a photographer with portraits of a soldier.

I have two cats that need up to date shots, routine checkup and some de-flea options from this brutal insect infested heat. any recommendations on caring, not over the top expensive options?
azurechaos, posting in austincommunity @ 10:13am: X-Rayins
Is there an orthopedic doctor in town that won't charge me an arm and a leg for getting some x-rays done (I've got a limited coverage insurance plan)? I got hit by a truck on my bicycle a couple years ago and didn't get checked out as I thought I was ok, but later on I started noticing my the bone(or ligaments) below my wrist hurting. So I figure I should get it looked at.

Thanks!
rothko, posting in austincommunity @ 8:45am: Scooter's Coffeehouse in Oak Hill is hiring!
Hey :-)

Our corporate people posted this on Craigslist, but I figured I'd mention it here as well...

Scooter's Coffeehouse is a small chain based in Omaha with some corporate- and some individually-owned franchises, primarily in the midwest. There are three stores in the Austin area; two are hiring part-time baristas right now. One is located in Oak Hill and the other up on Parmer/620. We need people with exceptional customer service skills and a great attitude. We're looking for someone who can pay attention to detail while multitasking in a fast-paced environment.

You don't need to have previous barista experience, just a passion for great coffee! We have several part-time positions available. You can apply online at http://www.scooters-austin.com -- thanks!
turi, posting in austincommunity @ 8:24am: vacation homes in austin
Eep, I've been holding it off too long, and vacation homes and condos in Austin are getting snapped up left and right for ACL. Anyone have any pointers for this a Houstonian seeking shelter so close in date?

Dear [info]austincommunity,

Report and formally apologize for all the awful things you're about to do this weekend in the Austin metro area.
Your level of fun will determine whether you'll be forgiven.

howeird143, posting in austincommunity @ 6:23am: Oil Change
Hey all... I need help finding a new place to get my oil changed. I live in NW Austin near the Arboretum area. I would like to find a place that is under $30 for the oil change and that uses Castrol oil. My old place had all of those but alas they closed their shop and moved out to P-ville and I am not interested in driving all the way out there. So any and all help would be appreciated.

TIA!

mamamoo, posting in austincommunity @ 1:18am: Where do the picky eaters go out to eat?
My MIL is visiting on Saturday (just one day, thank you Jesus!!) and we need to find a place to eat dinner.  She is super picky and usually chooses something bland/boring.  No BBQ or Mexican food.  Typical choice for her would be Fish & Chips or plain grilled chicken.  Yum!

Please tell me we have a choice other than IHOP.  Bonus for a location that serves alcohol to help me get through dinner without choking her.  O_o

Thanks!

About Dr. seuss. A funny bit I'd forgotten about from one of his books. Try to read this out loud really fast.

Let’s have a little talk about tweetle beetles….

What do you know about tweetle beetles?
Well…

When tweetle beetles fight, it’s called a tweetle beetle battle.

And when they battle in a puddle, it’s a tweetle beetle puddle battle.

And when tweetle beetles battle with paddles in a puddle, they call it a tweetle beetle puddle paddle battle.

And when beetles battle beetles in a puddle paddle battle and the beetle battle puddle is a puddle in a bottle…

They call this a tweetle beetle bottle puddle paddle battle muddle,
and…

When beetles fight these battles in a bottle with their paddles and the bottle’s an a poodle and the poodle’s eating noodles…

They call this a muddle puddle tweetle poodle beetle noodle bottle paddle battle,
and…

Now wait a minute Mr. Socks Fox!

When a fox is in the bottle where the tweetle beetles battle with their paddles in a puddle on a noodle-eating poodle.
THIS is what they call…

A tweetle beetle noodle poodle bottles paddled muddled duddled fuddled wuddled fox in socks, sir!
tequilalemonade, posting in austincommunity @ 8:20pm: I was summonsed for jury duty a few weeks ago. I mailed the notice back saying I've been out of Austin for at least 30 days. Does anyone know who I should contact to make sure the letter was received? I don't want to have a warrant out for my arrest for not showing up or something crazy like that.
nonstickpan, posting in austincommunity @ 7:55pm: WTF, No TWC deals?
I currently have Grande for internet and cable and love it.  Unfortunately, we're moving to a place that only offers the (shitty) option of Time Warner.  We're probably going to do without cable since I hate Time Warner and really don't want to give them more of my money than needed, but I have to have internet because I'm starting an online business.  I tried to talk down the price, as most people succeed in doing, but the guy didn't offer me any kind of deals when I asked what specials were going on, other than a discount for locking into a year of service (yeah right).

Am I not using the right lingo?  Has anyone gotten a good deal with them recently, or are they now not offering any dealing on their prices?  I'm not paying them $45/month for something I pay $30 for (with waaay better customer service, btw) right now, if I can help it.  Any tips?

EDIT: Thanks for all the advice.  We went ahead and signed up for at&t DSL.
operator_error @ 3:37pm: Ok, I'm excited. I've been periodically checking the puppy ads, rescues, etc for lakeland terriers. I've wanted another one for awhile, but I decided that I can't just buy one, and I've wanted to adopt anyway....well, I looked on petfinder today and found a Lakie up for adoption. He's just shy of 2 years, is being fostered right now and is California. So, I email the foster parents, she told me she's in Seattle all the time and after talking to her on the phone it looks like I'm getting a Lakeland. The only cost is helping her with gas to get up to Seattle! She thinks she's going to be up here the end of August. Can you believe it!??!?! He's SUPER CUTE! DEXTER WILL HAVE A HALF BROTHER! Oh man, I'm so happy I finally found one! His name is Charlie, but I want to change that...but still keep it, maybe like Charles T Wiggles! Or Flashy McCharlieButt! Anyway, here are some photos!!!!

poyboy @ 5:48pm: new Heretic site
Heretic Films, the DVD distributor of Dear Pillow, has re-launched their website in a new, robust re-design that partners up with B-side to make their whole library available for digital download. Now, you can buy DP for $2.99 at low-res or $7.99 at high-res for your continual viewing pleasure. And, you can of course buy the DVD itself, which will come with all the extra stuff.  Pretty cool.

Saw the Monte Hellman double feature of The Shooting and Two-Lane Blacktop last night, which led me to believe that Warren Oates is just one of the best goddamn American character actors that ever lived. His performance is Two-Lane is just top-notch on every level - tough, vulnerable, hilarious, nuanced, with not a false note to be seen.

Any New Yorkers reading this - you have to put two movies on your agenda this weekend - the Duplass Bros' Baghead and Margaret Brown's The Order of Myths. Seriously, go. Baghead is opening in LA, too, so fuckin go already.
