The First, by Jan Richman
The first person who ever ate an orange ate the peel. That's why love's so compelling, its mainspring perpetually rigged up and ready to roll, electing you. Yo! Recipe maker! Food taster! Saint of First Causes! Bring your whelp of a tongue over here.
Passion's eyes say nothing of the string of goods changing hands behind. Waves break their backs over law-abiding currents, while a smooth skin of sand sings bed over a restless, hot-fisted earth. This is life, is all. It is the circle the saw makes.
Even death is penetrable, but watch that yawning loophole. A canary dips into the mine shaft and breaks the news, makes the news, carves out its peerless by-line. Yes, the first mortal must have felt something like joy when she unfolded her crowning assignment.
Her limbs sudden weight tearing a sigh from lucid air and the peopled frame tightening, tightening she moved, there must have been a lively, insistent churning: I, I.

9. If one is not wholly convinced of one's own lovability, receiving affection can appear like being bestowed an honor for a feat one feels no connection with.

John Hickey visited me this weekend, and it made me feel real good. This is a poem he wrote:
I am trying to sort out these contradictions
life is too short for playing around. too short for fending off boughs of love as if they were a school of gnats. often i have treated love like this, my flailing is also called drunkenness. my fighting is called pretension.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) There’s nothing wrong with allowing yourself to be led from the path you’d chosen for yourself. That’s often how you discover new, better ways of living. Sometimes, though, you don’t even realize you’ve been led badly astray until you meet someone who reminds you of who you really are (or were). Some people challenge you to become something or someone new. That’s great. But some people don’t expect you to be anything more (or less) than you already are, quite naturally. You’ve done enough rising to the occasion lately. This week, find someone who’ll let you take a seat, relax, and enjoy just being yourself.

Five Poems, Frank O'Hara
Well now, hold on maybe I won't go to sleep at all and it'll be a beautiful white night or else I'll collapse completely from nerves and be calm as a rug or a bottle of pills or suddenly I'll be off Montauk swimming and loving it and not caring where
*
an invitation to lunch HOW DO YOU LIKE THAT? when I only have 16 cents and 2 packages of yoghurt there's a lesson in that, isn't there like in Chinese poetry when a leaf falls? hold off on the yoghurt till the very last, when everything may improve

at the Rond-Point they were eating an oyster, but here we were dropping by sculptures and seeing some paintings and the smasheroo-grates of Cadoret and mysic by Varèse, too well Adolph Gottlieb I guess you are the hero of this day along with venison and Bill
I'll sleep on the yoghurt and the dream of the Persian Gulf

which I did it was wonderful to be in bed again and the knock on my door for once signified "hi there" and the deafening walk through the ghettos where bombs have gone off lately left by subway violators I knew why I love taxis, yes subways are only fun when you're feeling sexy and who feels sexy after The Blue Angel well maybe a little bit

I seem to be defying fate, or am I avoiding it?

My 10 fave songs from a given letter, wherein the given letter is W.
(in no particular order)
1. DJ Shadow - Why Hip Hop Sucks in '96 Because I love this whole album and I'm happy one of the songs began with W. It's the money
2. REM - Walk Unafraid Cheating. This is actually one of Steve's favorite songs, but it reminds me of him, and that's why it's here.
3. Portishead - Wandering Star It makes me think of cuddling. And sex.
4. Fancie - Want your Child Okay, no one really knows who she is, but I love her. I've listened to the album this is off of (A Negative Capability) so many times. She continues to be in my top 5 on last.fm
5. Harvey Danger - What you Live By Because you die by what you live by.
6. Mike Doughty - Ways + Means Because I love this man in so many ways.
7. PJ Harvey - We Float Off of my favorite album of hers. I love the lyrics.
8. Lamb - What Sound Of course I'd pick this song. It is highly listenable.
9. Beck - Where it's at Some old school love.
10. Tori Amos - Winter A song guaranteed to make me cry at least 50% of the times I listen to it.

2) Instead of focusing on this last week (I don't want to talk about it right now, but it's family-related), I've decided to show off some of the projects I've been working on ...

I am not generally one to get the vapors over some geeky mod from Make magazine, but hell if this isn't a gorgeous piece of tech:

Read all about it here, mirrored here.
And the best part is that Steve & I have a clicky keyboard sitting around, waiting to be used... O frabjous day!
