The past week I've been reading a lot about internet design. Even though I no longer design websites, I found it interesting to see why this website layout was so pleasing to the eye while that was just horrendous. There's also quite a bit on typography, because it plays a big part in layout design (and I never know how to set my type right). :p

This is something for my reference, and perhaps yours. Beyond giving a great big NO to scrolling marquees, flashing text, blinkies, and clashing neon colors, here are some articles showcasing designs that work while explaining why they do.

I think one's use of Twitter is maximized when you turn Device updates ON. You receive your contacts' updates the minute they are posted. (Great for stalkers!) While sending updates through SMS costs money, receiving your contacts' updates is free. The only limitation is that you can only receive 250 messages per week (if you're not in the US). Of course, if your contacts update too often, this might not be the best choice.

( How to Follow someone and turn Device Updates ON )

You'll have to do this for each contact you want to follow via your phone. This is good, since you can specify which people's updates you'll receive via text, and not clog your inbox.

It also occured to me that texting someone in the US is cheaper via Twitter. Both of you just turn your Device Updates ON, and you in the Philippines use PHtwitters, then simply send 140-character direct messages to each other! BRILLIANT.

Jaime pointed out a cheaper way for Filipinos to post tweets through text.

PHtwitters.com is a registered Twitter client. All messages sent through their gateway will have the tag "from phtwitters."

Sending tweets costs only what it would cost you to send a regular local text message (i.e., P1.00 per message for inter-network texts and maybe P0.20 only if you have subscribed to the ALLTEXT20 of Smart). This in contrast to P15.00 for updating directly via Twitter.

To register: Follow phtwitters. Text REG<space><twitterusername><space><twitterpassword> to +63-929-3632359 (for Smart) or +63-916-4967171 (for Globe).

I've been using Twitter for a few weeks now, and it's a handy application. At first I had trouble seeing what it was good for, but this first link changed my mind:

I was flying in to the Vegas airport, and I twittered "Just landed in Vegas airport." I would have never texted anyone that message, but in the Twitter culture, that's exactly what you're supposed to do. It just so happened that someone on my Twitter network was about to fly out of Vegas, so we met up at the airport bar and had a drink. I would have never known otherwise that this person was at the airport, nor would I have ever sent him a text message or called him that I had just landed.

Who Should I Follow?
I plan on keeping my Twitter contacts confined to those I know personally, but this is a good tool for those who want to expand their network. Suggestions are based on your current Twitter friends. Simply enter your Twitter username and get suggestions on people to follow. However, if you follow few people (less than five or so), suggestions may not yet be possible.

Twitter Digest
If you prefer: read Twitter updates in a more manageable fashion. Pick usernames and you will see all updates made by them during the past full day. The digest is available as both a webpage that you can visit periodically, or as an Atom feed that you subscribe to get updates in your favorite feed reader.
