Six hour drive, a hundred bees dead. [Mar. 22nd, 2008|09:09 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[music |Ratatouille]

So I was away in the bay for five days. Didn't check the internet at ALL. Wasn't even curious. Well, I get back and it appears that practically nothing has happened on yon interwebs. I should take these net-less breaks more often. It was easier than I suspected to just get away from the useless cycle of reflexively checking the same sites every hour. Talk about an unhealthy routine.

I preferred reading John McEnroe's "You Cannot Be Serious"

Five day review: solitude, handstands, and a tremendous medical disaster )

More on rehearsals and the new kitchen in a few days. Mom's visiting for a bit and helping us settle in to the new cleaned-up domicile. I've still got some heavy mopping to do but we're almost done.

RIP Wild Pegasus [Jun. 25th, 2007|07:12 pm]

-Edit for the fourth time: I wrote something about Chris Benoit shortly after his death and added things to it as details came out, but having seen such a high concentration of attention over this and some really ridiculous reactions from both supporters AND detractors that I realize I don't even want to be involved with the debate. This isn't going away for a while either.

*Ahurm* he was great in Japan in the early-mid 90's. Thank you and goodnight.

-Generally speaking, I have a strong feeling it's going to be a very strange summer.

-I'm seriously going to do this spontaneous-as-hell Disneyland thing in about a month, once shooting on FPaPtM is absolutely a done deal. I think it will be fun, if not just an exercise in freaking girls out. A weekend at the park for two is only about a third of what I make a month so I am all about it happening one way or another. Bout time I had a damn adventure that somebody else wasn't organizing first (although I guess I can consider Fancy Plans one long-ass adventure... but it's a group effort). Also, I need to travel more.

I hear California Screamin' is a good ride.

I am ALSO all about SEATTLE this year. Let's make it happen, people!

[music |Now remember kids we parked in Itchy]

My third Comic-Con is over.

Click here for a shitload of pictures. There are a ton of aliens. There were so many kids/nerds wearing Naruto headbands that you could've filled the Cook Islands with 'em. (There are no pictures of nerds wearing Naruto headbands herein, just cool crap and cool people and expensive things) )

Comic-Con weekend was a great time with great company. I ran into about seven people I know, got recognized by four people (usually it's an average of two or three at a convention). The convention itself was pretty good, but I still wouldn't pay money to get in.

Christ on a pogo stick I can't even BEGIN to describe how brain-crappingly hot it is back in the valley. I can't even sleep with MYSELF (2, 3, come on now ungh got a brand new dance). I'm getting a proper air conditioner TODAY dammit. This fan in the window shit is not cutting it anymore.

CRAZY WHITE PEOPLE!

Sea World is a clean, pleasant, edumacational park. Highly recommended if you love animals and want to have a lengthy laid-back afternoon. It was nowhere near as ride-intensive as people led me to believe, they only have a rapids ride and one coaster (the SkyRide & SkyTower aren't exactly exciting). Great live shows and attractions. However, be prepared for gangs of families wearing garish pastel colors (I have never SEEN so much pink in my life) and near-collisions with children who can see everywhere but right in front of them. More pics at my sister's blog.

My last day in Hope, I depart for the airport at... 4 A.M.?! AGKH. Can't say I'm looking forward to returning and paying all those impending bills. It hasn't been all fun up here though, my hay fever clobbered me a few times. Man, where does the time go? I could've just gotten here yesterday.

Additional lessons learned:
-How to drive stick (I AM VERSATILE NOW AND THEREFORE A WINNER AT LIFE)
-Lime Coke > Pepsi Lime
-Moose do not live near the mountains (so I haven't seen/been gored by any)
-I need to do yoga every morning again
-Reading is for awesome people

Anyway, time to continue flopping upstream.

[mood | Pocky'd]
[music |Daft Punk - Aerodynamic]

Well, Surrey sucked. I was wandering about for only 15 minutes when it started raining, so I ran into the Guilford Town Center Mall and was stuck there for the afternoon. No parks for me. Funny thing, I've never seen such a high concentration of Indian people. About a third of the people in the mall were Indian. Haven't seen this many Indian people even when I'd walk up the Indian section of University Ave in Berkeley. From what I've seen so far, the great majority of Pacific Asians in the Fraser Valley (Surrey-Chilliwack-Hope) are Korean. All the convenience stores and most of the gas stations in Hope are run by Koreans (I hear they're much nicer to you if you say you're Korean). I saw a few Chinese people and they didn't look very adept at standing up straight or CLOSING THEIR MOUTHS GOD DAMN BANANA-LIPPED MOUTH-BREATHERS!

But now I've got a box of Pocky and everything's cool.

I extended my stay in Hope so now I've got another 6 days left. Time for me to hunker down and work more extensively on my script- the sky is not in my favor for outdoorsy exploits this week. The weather's been overcast and rainy and will let up the day AFTER I leave (naturally) but the sun might come out on Tuesday and Thursday. When the sun is out, it's perfect. I'd prefer a hot day up here as opposed to one under a dense layer of smog, which is what I get to look forward to when I return. Yay & whoo & ha.

So far on this trip I've eaten my weight in French Baguettes, made friends with some random cats, watched Brigadoon (Cyd Charisse + Gene Kelly = Automatic Win), beat my mom at Scrabble five times, got a new favorite jacket (to replace my jean jacket from Title Pending that is now 65% disintegrated), actually kept a regular sleeping schedule for two weeks, read Hemingway's Old Man and The Sea & seven assorted Star Trek books, taught my mom how to use a digital camera, and otherwise did a lot of shopping for the house. Hopefully before I leave I'll find those shoes that I mentioned last entry.

The first week I was here, I went to a local net cafe four or five times. The owner could tell I'd been to Canada before (how he deduced this I have no idea), and it turns out he used to live near White Ave. in Edmonton which is the same area where my ex-girlfriend lived when I visited last year. Thought that was funny. We had a great laugh, and then I split him in two with an axe. It made for a memorable day.

In Hope, the high school graduates can fill out applications to get $2000 worth of groceries free. Interesting idea.

Man, the other weird thing is that most of the young adults here are already parents or preggers. If they're legal, boom, stroller and a husband. Not too many single young people my age that I've seen thus far.

That Pocky lasted about five minutes.

And now, just because it popped into my mind while I was doing the dishes:

"Regine, your feelings are hurt because Khadijah accused you of lying. Khadijah, you accused Regine of lying because she lies, yes. Easy solution: Regine, don't lie; Khadijah, don't care. NOW - that I've solved the mystery of the pruny smooches... can I PLEASE get some Chinese Mustard?"

BEST SITCOM EVER. Not on DVD yet? Unforgivable travesty.

[mood | full of buttered potato]
[music |ah-doo-reer-doo-ret, a doo-REER-doo-ret]

When you're in a sunny green field surrounded with trees & ambient life in all its untainted naturalitude, energy just emanates from everywhere. It's keen. It's been murky today, but yesterday was perfect and I capitalized on every bit of sun I could get. Got a couple hours of exercise off a half stomach of bread and the rest absorbed from the atmosphere. Below are some results from playing with the timer on my digital camera.

I've always tried to get my parafuso like my Mestre's (which means I was copying Eddy's d/b+3+4 since '97), getting as close as I could to his degree of lean and extension. I've collided with somebody in the roda with this at least once or twice back in the day (good times).

Side flip:

I haven't tumbled in like two months. Training in my living room has improved my landing stability (I have to land solid or risk smearing myself across the walls) but the ceiling's too short for even cartwheeling into a flip. Took me two days to get some of my old height back, there are some things I don't plan to lose for at least another ten years so I have to make a better effort to maintain back home (why hello thar full-twisting gainer where have you been -_-)

edit: My feet look really big, I just noticed. People have always remarked that my shoes look really heavy and uncomfortable for kicks & flips but the truth is the opposite. I love 'em. I've trained in the same kind of Vans for 9 or 10 years now, even when I was taking Shaolin. I miss the old Dickies with the white soles, I ran through about 4 pairs of those. I'm on my third of the ones above, and I think my next will probably be these Old Skools (I'm not a skater either, I just like these Vans)

Tomorrow I'm going to wander around Surrey for the afternoon and try to get busy in a Burger King bathroom. I'm crazy. Allow me to amaze thee. They say I'm ugly but it just don't faze me.

[mood | so fresh and so]
[music |Light drizzly ambiance]

Helped me Ma buy a computer yesterday. May slap some pictures up when we get the DSL running in a week or whenever we get 'round to it.

I like small towns. Whenever I plan my own vacation, I try to find a small town to stay at just outside of whatever big city I flew into. I like patronizing local shops and diners, talking to the locals, observing their daily routines and how different their lifestyles are. I hate doing typical touristy shit and I hate crowds.

The Fraser Valley is a peaceful place, and I already look forward to returning here the next chance I get. Hope is surrounded by tree-covered mountains and it gives the place a kind of timelessness. The Coquihalla river runs about 15-20 yards from the back of the house. When it's quiet, the river makes a steady white noise that's slightly muted by the tree line at the edge. Soothes the mind. It rains regularly here, but it's a very light rain that is hardly unpleasant. When it's sunny, ye GODS the sky is so blue you'd figure it was photoshopped. Shows how jaded and smogged out my Los Angelean ass has become.

At the gas stations here, you pump your gas FIRST, then go inside and pay for it AFTER. I don't think I've ever in my entire life been at a gas station that does it that way. Had trouble comprehending it for a few minutes. Such heathen American presumptions, that anyone would take advantage of this and pump & run. Or bump n' jump. (I'VE ONLY SEEN PEOPLE PAY FIRST MY WHOLE LIFE I SWEAR)

Funny thing about this town of Hope, it's a tourist town mainly for the rivers and hiking (lots of campsites that say "Gateway to Holidayland" around here) but one of their biggest draws (so they say in the brochures), is the fact that First Blood was almost entirely shot here in 1981. They have a tour laid out and every single insignificant facet of what happened is logged in the town museum. Actually they've shot about 8 movies in Hope (Shoot to Kill, K2, some romantic comedies, some boy-and-his-dog movies), but Rambophilia is allegedly the biggest draw. They're supposed to have some commemorative Rambo celebration in October 2007, I have to wonder if they'll get any guests like the second unit first assistant cameraman or the production office coordinator.

I miss the channel (and the cancer that my close proximity to my pc at home was slowly nuturing). /bigtran oll

EDIT: DSL installed wut. Pics soon!

Roaming and roving, errantly exploring, wonder wander meander. [May. 29th, 2005|04:18 am]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | travelicious]
[music |Prince Live at the Aladdin: Strollin']

On Wednesday I'm going to go visit my mom in Hope, British Columbia (just outside of Vancouver) for about 10 days. Help her get the house set up, get my head straight, flush out the smog, get some exercise and what they call "clean air". Anybody out there in/around Vancouver and wanna meet up, give me a buzz and hopefully we can arrange a few hours.

Since I started traveling in 2000, I've tried my best to make a trip out of state at least once a year. Here be some of my past jaunts outside my native California:

-When I was 2 or something I went to Maryland where my Aunt lived. Naturally I don't remember a goddamn thing except being in snow and too cold to move (there's a picture of a pintsized me standing motionless in snow somewhere at home). The only other trip I remember from my youth is when we accidentally drove into Nevada by overshooting Lake Tahoe.

-When I was in 9th grade we took a Carnival cruise to Mexico. It sucked because it was cold (only season when we could afford it) and I just wanted to stay on the damn boat with the gigantic arcade. We spent a few hours on a small island off the coast, and later in Ensenada and I remember being miserable the whole time. The boat was awesome, though.

-In 2000 I went to Detroit, Michigan for a week to do Capoeira workshops for the branch of our group there. There wasn't much to do there and it was pretty cold, but I had so many friends that it was just a party all the time. Good people, good times.

-Later that year when summer was setting in, I was lucky enough to go to Kauai (part of the Hawaiian islands) to do Capoeira workshops on special invitation by a friend of my Mestre. I was on the north coast and spent most of my time around Hanalei Bay. That was only for a week or two, but it was an extremely memorable trip. I met a man named Jack who took me to the caves and some beaches I never would've found on my own. He was a grizzled man in his mid 60's, I wonder if he's still there. More pics of Kauai here.

-In early 2001 I went to Buffalo, New York for even more Capoeira workshops. It was during winter which was my first taste of negative temperatures, and MAN was it fucking hard to train in a freezing auditorium. But like Detroit, I had tons of friends there (most everyone from Detroit came by), and it was again party all the time party all the time. GREAT food too.

The best part of those three trips is that everything was paid for. Those were truly excellent times. More pics of those workshop trips here.

-In April 2001 I went to Kirkland, Washington (just outside Seattle) to work on a test for The Matrix Online. It wasn't officially The Matrix yet, Lithtech/Monolith just needed us for a test to see if their system would work. We didn't have much time to spend outside of work and the hotel.

In 2002 I didn't go out of state. Those were the years I was neck-deep in the ghetto fab filmmaking and made Title Pending 2 and Damn 3 (which made me even more infamous/liked/hated on el intarweb)

-In February 2003 I returned to Seattle to work for Monolith again. Seattle is really nice, it's like San Francisco with cleaner streets and less hills. Got my obligatory Space Needle pic that time. There was this cool bartender we talked to for a while after work one evening, she was originally from Orange County (for some reason it's always bothered me that I've forgotten her name). Now that I know more people who live in Seattle, I have to go there again someday and get my game on.

-In mid-October 2003 I went to Edmonton, Alberta to visit my girlfriend at the time. I fell completely in love with Canada. Absurdly clean air, nice people, great public transportation, Tim Horton's. More pics of Canada (and Spongebob Kraft Dinner) here.

-December 2003 was Japan for Devil May Cry 3. I was staying in Shibuya, spent most of my time there finding every arcade I could. Once I learned to use the train, I went to Akihabara (pictured above) as often as possible. That was a job to be savored. More pictures of Japan here.

-I returned to Edmonton in January 2004 in the dead of winter and experienced MINUS 32 DEGREES. HOLY SHIT. Body parts falling off and everything. I'd like to go back someday when it's spring or summer.

-In April 2004 I visited my mom on the big island of Hawaii. I didn't enjoy it that much because the bugs were just TEARING MY ASS UP, and the beaches were inferior to those I experienced on Kauai. The beaches were so heavenly in Kauai that it made up for the 80-odd bites I got. On the big island the beaches were rocky and very shallow. Still, it was quite beautiful. Pictures here and pictures here.

-April 2005 was St.Vincent Island in the Caribbean, as displayed in this previous entry. That included an all too brief stop in Puerto Rico (which I absolutely MUST see again). The plane also stopped on the way back in Barbados and Florida, but I didn't get to look around either of those places.

I've been very fortunate to travel as much as I have, considering a lot of people don't get the chance to go anywhere for years at a time. If you really want to go somewhere, you have to SEIZE the opportunity when it presents itself- get away and broaden your horizons, or just kick back and clear your head. Sometimes taking a risk to get away for a while is completely worth it.
Future places to visit: England, France, Germany, Scotland, Greece, Brazil, New Zealand, maybe Jakarta to roll Andrew-style, and misc HerVert locations (MD,OR,GA etc). My godparents live in Italy, perhaps there as well (although I hear that country's particularly snide to foreigners). But we'll see. Never know, I might just get crushed by a meteor tomorrow *knock wood*.

Anyway, any of y'alls got lists/pics/memories/recommendations of places you've visited outside of your territorial familiarity, I'd love to read 'em.

[music |Wanted: Richard Pryor, Live in Concert - Discipline]

On the left, coach dining at its finest (at its worst, MAYBE a bag of mini-pretzels). On the right, business class. EVER GET THE CHANCE, FLY BUSINESS CLASS.

There was a 5-hour stop in Puerto Rico. Probably the most BEAUTIFUL BEACH I HAVE EVER SEEN (in ten minutes) but we had to split ;_;

My room was the proverbial bomb. Double bed, private balcony, top floor and everythang. It's what I got for not wanting a room with a kitchenette.

View from the hotel. I LOVE the tropics. The humidity is just right and you can walk around half-naked (unless it's illegal) and feel perfectly comfortable ALL DAY. Like 24/7. Everything's so laid back. Strangest thing- all the times I went to Hawaii the bugs just ATE MY YELLOW ASS UP. On Kauai I came close to setting a record for bites (the beaches made up for it), and on the big island the volume of bites damn near ruined my stay (lame shallow beaches). But in the Caribbean, even on all the islands I had to stop at for a few hours between flights, NOT ONE BITE. And only when I got back to the states in Miami I somehow managed to get a single bite on my forearm ON THE AIRPLANE. IRONY!

Shot I took on the roof (experimenting with the timer) at 11 p.m.
