Done I'm Done And I'm On To The Next [Dec. 7th, 2006|11:11 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

The hands of a working man.

-Set my alarm to NPR. Been listening to it all morning and other news all day for the past week or so on my MP3 player (good ol' FM radio, screw you iPod). Yesterday I listened to a Senate hearing all afternoon which was actually pretty interesting. Unfortunately today was a press conference with Bush, and I SWEAR to GOD, listening to the man for any longer than a minute decreases your intelligence. He is bar none one of the worst public speakers in authority today. All he does is repeat the same damn phrases and buzzwords while occasionally getting irate when called on his shit. Just add "Stay The Course" to the beginning or end of every other sentence and you have an accurate Bush impression. I was half expecting him to start going on about A Thousand Points of Light. Apparently We Will No Quit, We Will Not Run, We'll Stay Until The Job Is Done. Times twelve. U.S.A.! WHOO! Fucking jets, man!

-Good week at work. We're slowly but surely moving everything into a new place FIVE TIMES as big. My boss is smart, keeping it within the same city close to his house and restaurant. It's only a mile away from the current shop. There's about fifteen years worth of accumulated crap in the store so it's definitely going to take up til new year's to be ready. Going to be a wild 2007.

-Looks like my grandfather's on the edge. His lungs are full of fluid after a lifetime of smoking and he can't eat. Although his health has been deteriorating for a few years, it did seem on several occasions that he would outlive us all. He may pass before Christmas. My aunts have been watching him around the clock so if he's ready to go, at least he'll go in comfort. I don't know that much about my grandfather but it makes me glad knowing I've inherited such perennial genes.

Everything is as it is. And what is, is everything. Circle of life, etc.

-Already making plans for Xmas. I have GOT to go to a New Year's party when I get back. Hopefully there will be something nice and low-key going on. With snacks! HELLA snacks! Snacky snacks! Board games! Toasts! Make-outs! Pixelated shenanigans!

Trundling on. I have got to go to sleep early for once.

Try Grow Cube, a sort-of sequel to the original Grow planet. Fun shit!

Also try Grow RPG (not really an RPG, you build the world a la the Grow sphere method and watch how it affects the hero). It's fun to see the different fates of the hero and the correct solution ending is great.

All 3 Grow solutions are behind this LJ Cut if you get stuck )

This meme is a-pretty cool. (I chopped some html & the second chart to condense it)

CROOKS AND LIARS

Original post by [info]williameva:

Bush only wants money.

He denied food, support, and supplies from Canada and several other countries. He fucking snubbed Fidel Castro, CASTRO IS TRYING TO HELP. Guess who is stopping all of that entry? Homeland Security. The defense foundation that HE created. As if all of the money donated would even go to the relief. Fuck that.
Seriously, Bush, I fucking want to see you assassinated in the most gruesome way.

OK: EVERYONE, IF YOU AGREE WITH THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT, PLEASE POST IT IN YOUR JOURNAL, LET'S TRY TO GET THIS PERSPECTIVE AS WIDESPREAD AS POSSIBLE!

If Clinton can get impeachment hearings for having his cock blown and lying about it, then Bush should be up for treason.

FuckTheSouth.com, a very entertaining read. Profanity-laden rants against general collectives, although usually unfair, are an integral part of human arguments and can be a source of great hilarity (or absurdity).

Politics by HerV [Oct. 23rd, 2004|07:40 pm]

Next time you have 15 minutes, read this article by Hunter S. Thompson.

"Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders.
That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and
denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to
greater danger. It works the same in any country."

-Hermann Goering (1893-1946) Commander-iin-Chief of the Luftwaffe, President
of the Reichstag, Prime Minister of Prussia, Hitler's designated successor.

"Beware the leader who bangs the drums of war in order to whip the
citizenry into a patriotic fervor, for patriotism is indeed a double-edged
sword. It both emboldens the blood, just as it narrows the mind....And
when the drums of war have reached a fever pitch and the blood boils with
hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the
rights of the citizenry. Rather, the citizenry, infused with fear and
blinded with patriotism, will offer up all of their rights unto the leader,
and gladly so. How do I know? For this is what I have done.
And I am Caesar".
-Shakespeare

"Now a lot of Americans might think "Fuck da world". Perhaps they're right,
since America is the lone superpower left in the world. But as history
has proven, even the mightiest empires have fallen when they became too
big and overextended. America is trying to reshape the world in its image,
and has been doing so for a long time now, and when somone finally bites
them in the ass for their shitty foreign policy (Note: Doesn't anyone on
the right ever stop and wonder "Why do they hate us so?" Hint: "They hate
us for our freedom" is incorrect), they make like the old cowboy war
mongers that everyone thinks they are and tries to stomp a mudhole on
everyone who thinks differently ("If you're not with us, you're against
us" - WHAT FUCKING IGNORANT SHIT IS THAT).

If America continues on its current course, it will soon find itself with
no allies left. Some Americans may not give a shit. As I said, you are the
most powerful country, and you could very well destroy the whole planet
is the whole planet decides to go to war with you. My issue is that I
believe that's where we're headed if this continues: Eventually world
opinion on America will be so low that no one will give a shit the next
time Rome starts burning. And at that point, either America will declare
war on the world (or perhaps, vice-versa), in which case we're all
probbaly fucked, or it'll finally start wising up and behave like it's a
part of the world and not just standing on top of it. As a pessimist,
I'm betting on the former... BUSH NEEDS TO GO, NOW."
-U

"America is the jock in class who fucks all the pretty girls and
occasionally throws a nerd in a locker. You can hate him all you want.
Let's be honest, he doesn't care. He might call you a fag or punch you
in the arm. But, at the end of the day he's just thinking sports and pussy."
-F

(reaction to above statement) "And that jock is a fucking idiot if he
thinks that major repercussions for his actions aren't coming fifty
years down the line."
-KS

And some post-election thoughts:

"Unless they are the very small percentage of the Rich in the US nobody
can tell me they are better off with this Administration than say the
last. The fact of the matter is that people vote for the incumbent because
that's pretty much how it has always been because they already know what
to expect, regardless if the person they vote for has proven to be full
of shit after 4 years. That I believe is quite stupid/retarded."
-SA

"To be honest, Bush being the president hasn't reached as far as one might think, it hasn't had any effect on my state/city. Even if we got terrorized, we're a wide city and not a high one, odds are, I'd be fine. Not only that, there are too many arabs here for us to get attacked, they might as well just attack their homeland.

The thing is, I just agree with what Bin Laden said in his tape too much. I think that this is a president who has fearmongered his way into legitimacy, and is a lemming of a much more powerful, and brilliant hidden (or not so hidden) conspirator. The fact is, our lives are not in jeopardy, none of us here are going to be killed in any type of battle, and none of us here are going to feel the sting of unemployment or taxes.

You have to understand something, access to a wide range of information, and to a further extent, literacy (super-literacy, rather, which we all here posess) is relatively new to the world on a large scale. There are still several very ignorant people in this country, and our school system is failing them.

That's what I'm concerned about, I'm concerned about the level of education. I didn't receive my education from school, I received my social skills there. My education, I received from reading outside of school and prioritizing the internet as my primary study school. Many people in this country don't even understand how to use libraries, and teaching is just another job, it's not a profession.

I'm concerned that we are fighting a war for power and influence under the guise of an unwinnable war on terror. Of course, you would choose an enemy that can never be defeated if you wanted to obscure the cause of your battle. Most of this is one long drama that is playing out with very little effect on our lives.

Those of us with a worldy perspective are very hurt by this, because we understand that the rest of the world is equally as important as this country. But the fact of the matter is this, regardless of us having the worst president in most of our lifetimes, this is still the best country in the world. Those of us who are even able to read this, are among the luckiest of the lucky, alive or dead, in any time in history. The fact is, we live in the best place in the best time, ever, period. Yes, the state of the world and this country is not even satisfactory, but it's still a great country, and it's still the best we've had so far.

The truth about the world and life in general, and while I'd hate to get spiritual on you guys, I feel that I have to, it is a test. The world wasn't designed to be perfect, it is important to view it as a work in progress, that we, in conjunction with whatever God we believe in, are helping to construct, and we have a responsibility to the future, to the past, and to the present, to make the right decisions.

I don't feel that Bush was the right decision in this, but that said, these are mistakes that have to happen for us to learn the lessons that we need to learn and for us to move forward, clearly, or else the situation would not have played out like this. Some of us have further to go than others. But that's why history is important, and if you look at history, you will see a clear pattern in what is going on here. The fact is, the incumbant's team is using both history, and our ignorance of history against us.

This also leads back to the educational system. Nobody with a great deal of power truly wants the people to be educated, because one who has power, has education. Those two words should be synonyms. The more intelligent one is, the more difficult it is to control him or her. This is why money does not get poured into the educational system, it is more of a battleground than even the middle east. It is a process that is designed to weed out the weak from the strong, and the intellectual from the unintellectual. It is not a home base of opportunity, as the idealism behind it, may lead one to believe.

Would Kerry have been a good president? We will never know now. But honest, I don't think he would have. I don't think that he would have done very much different, as his race tightened, he allowed himself to be forced into becoming more agressive and more Bush-esque in his speeches and demeanor, because he had to appeal to the part of America where the votes mattered. By the end, I don't believe that anything that he was saying, was what he truly felt at all, and it was all very dubious. I truly wonder if he would have done anything at all, or would he have spent his four years reforming and repealling all of the shit that has happened within the last four years.

The only real disadvantage of this, that will have the most damaging ramifications, is the possibility of Bush appointing up to 4 (I believe) new Surpreme Court justices, who will definitely do all that they can to push their personal beliefs on this country.

When the head changes, the direction of the body changes, and since that has not happened, then the worst that we can really expect is four years of the same. Just grind it out, because while it's not going to get any better, for those of us who matter, we will survive, and thrive even, regardless."
-DY

"Dear European Union,

The last four years have seen the establishment of a new standard in international politics, with a strong push for preemptive war without concrete evidence of imminent threat or united allied support. "Police actions" for the sake of preventing and punishing transgressions against a nation's own people have also raised the idea of humanitarian war to a new level.

In light of these developments, I humbly request that you exercise this newfound freedom of Western nations and declare a preemptive military strike. The target in question is a nation that has the largest stockpile of weapons of mass destruction - nuclear, biological, and chemical - in the known world, and admits to the most extensive programs for developing and manufacturing new ones. This nation is the only one to have ever deployed nuclear weapons against a military or political target.

Morever, this nation is also a known sponsor of terrorism throughout the world, in particular Africa and the Middle East. The government of this country has trained, supplied, and at times even harbored terrorists from countless groups for dubious reasons. This country had known ties to Saddam Hussein and many other prominent and dangerous despots and terrorist groups.

As if the above were not reason enough for preemption, this nation has also been guilty of some of the worst human rights violations in history. An unacceptable percentage of this country's population lives below the poverty line, in conditions deemed both unsanitary and unsafe by modern standards. Many in this country are denied equal rights on the basis of differences of religious or sexual orientation. They carried out the systematic eradication and later relocation/interment of indigenous peoples. They have, in the past, forced their own citizens into prison camps based purely on ethnicity. They even condoned slavery at one point.

Though you may not wish to become involved in such affairs, take into consideration that the country in question has engaged in war with much smaller and less advanced nations periliously close to your region. They are establishing a military presence in this area and now pose a clear and present threat to any number of your member-nations and their allies.

For the sake of spreading the ideals of freedom, equality, and prosperity to oppressed people, it is undeniably necessary to remove the despotic dynasty in power and rebuild a democratic government in place of the archaic system currently ruling this country. Please, for the good of the world community, the American Problem must be dealt with.

Looking forward to the invasion,

Your Pal, The DG"

War [Jun. 29th, 2004|03:40 pm]
[Tags|, ]

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the President or that we are to stand by the President right or wrong is not only unpatriotic and servile but it is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt, 1918

"If you are a decent human being, war is going to offend you because it has no purpose other than to satisfy someone's desire for power and profit. And it is the little people who suffer."

I saw a picture in the paper today of teenagers at a pro-war rally. Some of the signs said 'kill the enemy'. Do these kids know anything about the atrocities that happen during war? About what happened to the families, the civilians, all the people that were affected by the death and destruction? WHOO, WAR! ALL RIGHT! YEAH! KILL 'EM ALL! How American.

I do not like how anyone who is anti-war is automatically labeled as anti-America and pro-Saddam. That is not the truth, the issues are never as black and white as we want them to be. I was flipping channels and came across a Christian show doing a program about the "characteristics of the Anti-American" and were showing all the anti-war protestors as being pro-Saddam anti-liberty anti-freedom nutcases. Thus all the pro-war speakers were shown as victims of the rampant anti-war system. I came THIS close to vomiting with rage.

Friend and enemy. It's never that cut and dry in reality. But let's give the war machine the old heave ho, and suddenly it is that easy for every citizen who'll get so wrapped up in the paranoia that they'll support bombing anything just to get back to 'how it used to be'. The world is changing every day. And if war happens, things will probably get worse.

"...I believe passionately that war can only ever be the absolutely final option for humanity. Unfortunately, we have been so protected from its pain and horror by the impenetrable wall of censorship and euphemism - as we will continue to be - that war is allowed to prevail as a legitimate means of conducting human affairs." -Maggie O'Kane, war reporter

Killing and revenge. Look at Israel and the Palestinians. I don't know if they will ever stop. And even worse, retribution for a killing there is taken out on civilians or refugees. What kind of species is this? What kind of people are we? Are we so incredibly numerous that being expendable in any circumstance is perfectly fine unless you're in a position of power? Or will it just always be like that? Maybe once the numbers get high enough, once the losses hit a certain point, we will re-evaluate the world's potential to exist peacefully. But by then the environment may have had enough.

It's never black and white. Just shades of grey that go on forever.

I believe that anyone who supports war should be willing to go DO THE KILLING AND DYING THEMSELVES. If everyone were made directly responsible for what they support, I think the pro-war movement would be much much smaller. Especially all the middle aged conservative housewives, brick stupid teenagers and every American who is dumb enough to suck in all the garbage the government has been spitting at us. Think about it. Would you want a war if you were the one being made to go do the pentagon's bidding? I don't fucking think so. Plus I don't think any of these people in congress that are too old to fight are thinking that either, because we have several hundred thousand trained expendables over there already.

"Sometimes, all too rarely, what you record are acts of human decency, kindness and compassion - I have seen men cradling dying comrades and weeping. But that's the only side of war you will see that is beautiful." -Don McCullin, war photographer

By saying all of this, it must mean automatically that I'm 'pro-Saddam'. Fucking bullshit logic.

I am morally opposed to war in general and the true motivations of our government which are always in question and usually hidden from us. It's all a massive grey area and I don't think anyone with an open mind and world view can really claim to be 100% pro-war or anti-war given these circumstances. Nobody has the ideal solution for everything.

Often times I think it really is our lot to just continue marching the species to extinction. There's a good chance I'd be more content if I were a cephalopod.

EDIT: Here's 2/3 of an excerpt from a Mark Morford article which very well explains my anti-war logic (besides the most obvious fact that war is just something one should be morally opposed to).

"Remember, Iraq's overthrow is only Phase 1 of the premeditated, long-standing Rummy/Cheney/Wolfie plan to aggressively bludgeon the Middle East into compliance with U.S. corporate and political interests. Did you miss that one? About the Project for the New American Century? Yep, been mapped out for years.

And their plan has nothing whatsoever to do with giving a damn for repressed people or raining blissful democracy upon starving nations. That is a side effect, a bonus, a great and touching piece of cover-up PR. Just as it is right now. Thousands of dead Iraqis? Hell, you ain't seen nothin' yet. Just wait until we "liberate" Syria.

Ah, but still the celebratory chants come. We have freed Iraq from its brutal dictator, one who was zero threat to our monster superpower country! And we did so by mutilating and killing countless thousands of Iraqi people, often ruthlessly, soldiers and citizens, women and children, so many bodies the local hospitals stopped counting, thousands more than were ever killed in 9/11, though there remains absolutely no connection between this war and 9/11, none whatsoever! Yay! Don't you feel proud?

And what, exactly, have we the American people won? What are the spoils of our victory? Let's look: A gutted U.S. economy, a record budget deficit, decimated civil liberties (the GOP now wants to make the draconian USA Patriot Act permanent), one of the most secretive and ruthless and warmongering administrations in 50 years and the outright derision and bitter resentment of much of the civilized world, of nearly every one of our former allies.

Oh, and a bonus: the horrific, irrevocable reputation that we are now a power-mad rogue superpower that will attack anyone, for any reason, on the hollowest of bogus pretenses. Righteous!

Ah, but what are Bush's spoils? Let's look: His copious corporate pals get to rush in and install a nice puppet government to help the baffled Iraqis rebuild their hovels and "manage" their precious oil. There, there, now, Iraq, your brutal dictator is gone. Welcome to rampant capitalism. See if you can tell the difference.

But, more than that, Bush's regime gets a vital, strategic piece of the oil-rich power puzzle with which to strong-arm all Mideast comers. Our iron foot is now in the door. This was the point all along.

Look. We haven't won a single thing. We haven't defeated a deadly or truly threatening enemy. We have not lovingly promoted the causes of peace and freedom and hot vente mocha-caramel lattes for every starving child. Liberating an oppressed people is a wonderful thing indeed. The images of cheering Baghdadis are truly amazing. For about a week. But that result was never the point.

And we have not, in the slightest bit, reduced the threat of terrorism to our nation. In fact, we have done the exact opposite. We have, most likely, amplified that threat a hundredfold, a thousandfold. Look at those cluster bombs fall, those women decapitated. See the children scream, those Arab nations seethe and mourn, the world stare at us, appalled and horrified and angry. Do you feel safer now? Boy, I sure do. I feel like, like ... another tax cut for the wealthy! Yep, that oughta do it.

Quick show of hands: Who remembers the alleged reason we had to stomp Saddam in the first place? Wasn't it nukes? Chemical warfare? WMDs? Skanky mustache? Because, of course, we have found exactly nada. If he had any, and he was as vile as insane as we all seem to think, don't you think he would've used them by now? Go figure.

Wait, was it because he's a brutal thug? Is that why we stomped him? Nope, that was never the reason. Hell, if that's our criteria for slamming tiny nations completely unprovoked, if all it takes is a wicked despot/former ally and an oppressed people who don't even realize how much they're in need of a nice bloody all-American ass-kicking, well, we're gonna be busy. It's a long list.

Sure enough, Baghdad fell like an old Tinker-Toy fort. The pointless battle has indeed been "won," as everyone knew it would be. But the real war -- ideological, religious, geopolitical, petrochemical -- is only just beginning. And, as the Shrubster says, it won't be over until the last terrorist is killed.

Good thing we just keep creating them, eh, George?" -Mark Morford

Great Quotes [Apr. 21st, 2003|06:13 pm]
[Tags|, ]

"Since it is possible that you may depart from life this very moment, regulate every thought and act accordingly." -Marcus Aurelius Antoninus

"Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind." -John F. Kennedy

"I am nauseated by pop culture, and 90 percent of what's on TV panders to the most banal desires of humankind. Few Americans will ever produce a truly great work, not because we lack the skill or intelligence but because we have been taught that if it isn't instantaneous, it isn't worth the effort." -Unknown

"Kids today are too apathetic, they take too many things for granted and don't realize they need to stand up and be counted on things that are important to them. You have to be relentless and persistent in going after a goal. When my own kids were graduating, I told them, "It's important to decide what field you want to become involved in, and you should pursue it with determination." I think that's a mistake a lot of parents make with their kids. They want them to become doctors, lawyers and so forth. It's important to allow a child to find his own place. There's only one thing that matters, and that's happiness. It's not a destination, it's a way to travel. You hear so may people say, "Oh, I'll be happy when..." Everybody is planning when they're going to be happy tomorrow. I can honestly say that I've always lived my life focusing on being happy for today. There's absolutely nothing else that can take priority over that." -Larry Flynt

"Mankind in its we-are-gods, deny-food-to-other-species arrogance, is most likely headed for an ignoble end. I think that human nature is a desire for, or always pushing toward, destruction. Man has created the idea of heaven and hell; man has created apocalypse- no other species has. So if there will be an end to the world, it's something we brought upon ourselves. That's what we do. That's what we do best, is just destroy ourselves. Man is pretentious to think he's the final chapter in evolution; man, like the dinosaurs, will eventually become extinct, and man's creations will take over us. All the things we've made will have an exegesis of sorts, and they'll be smart enough to realize that they don't need us anymore. The only thing that does make us special is the fact that I believe we do have a soul, and that's where our creativity comes from. Most folks ignore that part of themselves, shut down to its signals. Most people, by the standard dictionary definition, are androids. There's no reason to envisiona sci-fi world of people with metal inside of them- already, people that walk around look like human beings but they don't act like it. They don't express any kind of creativity, they don't show any emotions- they've dumbed themselves down with drugs, with television, with religion." -Marilyn Manson

"Art, like life, should be free, because both are experimental." -George Santayana

"Always question the status quo. Just because something is popular doesn't make it good. In fact, usually the opposite is true. Always expect to be disappointed by a summer blockbuster movie. Never compromise your integrity, unless you absolutely have to. And in the event you absolutely have to, do not do it quietly." -Janeane Garofalo

"The end of heroes is the same as ordinary men. They all die and eventually fade away in the memory of man." -Bruce Lee

"Work is something you don't like to do." -Al Hirschfeld

"As infants, we express ourselves fully, freely, and with no fear of what people will think of us. Then as we grow up, we work very hard at being liked and winning approval. This powerful desire causes us to begin to limit and censor how we really feel, what we really think, who we truly are. True acting demands that we relearn and reclaim our ability to be exactly who we are, that we find once again our true voice." -Unknown (issue of a Thespian magazine)

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent." -Eleanor Roosevelt

"Helping others more, they will be happy, and then I will be happy myself. Respect all forms of life, and show compassion and affection towards all sentient beings, with the understanding that everything is interdependent." -The Dalai Lama

"You have the perfect opportunity to figure out what inspires you. Once you figure out what you're good at and what you love to do, it's up to you to remain focused and have patience. Success is usually a long, drawn-out process. A lot of people don't recognize the value of patience, and that's where most people fail." -Unknown

"I like long walks. Especially when they are taken by those who annoy me." -Fred Allen

"I mean, I do keep buoyant. Because if one didn't laugh, one would cry. Look around- It's a nightmare, everything is awful, we have never been in such a precarious position before. It's so horrific, that sincerely, and I really mean it, if one doesn't wake up in the morning and exert buoyancy, one could get seriously depressed." -Unknown

"None are so empty as those that are full of themselves." -Anonymous

"You've got all these assorted divas, like these sappy, romantic singers. They are not tender like Nat King Cole - they are overwrought. And it's very flashy, but soulless. You look into the eyes of these people, and you know they are looking at themselves in the mirror. There is nothing to them but their own image." "We are drowning in images. We don't know fantasy from reality. Especially the generation coming up. Anything that is so accesible becomes disposable: You sit in your living room and drink your cola and eat your pizza, and you watch all of this, you know, pornography. It's not even music." - Joni Mitchell

"Success is getting what you want. Happiness is liking what you get." -H.Jackson Brown

"I don't try to be sexy. If you're sexy, it comes out. If you're not, you're not. And if you try to be, it just makes it too much" -Kirsten Dunst

"Assume that everything coming out of the mouths of those in authority is a lie, and make them prove to you that it isn't. They don't always lie, but you'll find yourself less disappointed if you start with the assumption that you're being misled. And then you'll be pleasantly surprised when you run across the few who are straight with you. Don't lose your sense of humor. It's what will save you from going crazy, and it's a very effective weapon in protecting you from those that would do you and others harm. Mark Twain once said, "Against the assault of laughter, nothing can stand."" -Michael Moore

"You do not decide to become an artist. It is what you are. You feel a passion to create, a belief in what you have to say, a need to express that belief to others, a desire to communicate visually." -Academy of Art brochure

"To try and explain creativity... it's like trying to explain love, you know? As soon as you start, you've formed a new opinion about it." -Unknown

(I wish I thought like this)
"It's weird. I don't see a glass half empty or half full... I just see a glass." -Unknown

"The things that stratify your position in school, the things that number you from top to bottom, they're not always going to be around. That arbitrary "who's popular" and "who's not" doesn't matter. The rest of your life, it's all level ground. Nobody will give a fuck whether you were class president." -Unknown
