I put up the rest of my LA photos.
Unfortunately, those were the last set of photos I could take before I dropped my brand new totally amazing camera on my way back from the Portland airport and totally biffed the lens.
When he gave it to me, Matt half-joked that he got me my own camera so I wouldn't break his now.
I hate proving him right.
To my credit! I've been using his camera for the last three years with no incident! And then of course I get my own and it's in the repair shop within three weeks.
Speaking of cameras:
You know how Leslie takes such lovely photos of her Beastlie creations? Specifically this example and this one?
I totally have some sweet behind the scenes action for you guys.

Sorry I missed last week's update, I am a scoundrel.
Perhaps the spot color makes up for my slackery? Probably not, but it's there anyway.
The last few weeks I've been really changing how I do DAR based off feedback I've been getting from other cartoonists.
Most dramatically (and least obvious to you readers), I've been working a LOT larger.
Normally I'd draw and ink the whole comic on an 8.5 x 11 piece of crappy printer paper using pens and erasing my pencil marks afterwards.

Now I'm still doing my initial penciling on the same paper, but then I scan it in, blow it up enormously in photoshop, print out the larger version (sometimes on real Bristol paper!) in a light color that won't be picked up by a scanner, and then ink on that. Working larger really is making it a lot easier for me to draw everything. Amazing!
I'm also trying to use brushes and brush pens a lot more, since they have a much more natural-looking line than what a pen can produce. Unfortunately, I have a hella hard hold which makes my hand cramp up and shlop down super fat lines. Aw well, I'm still practicing.
Oh! And thirdly, I'm only using THREE grey tones (30, 50, 70%) instead of the eleventy billion I was using previously. Dude, it's soooo hard for me. Ideally this would help me keep my tones less busy and more focussed and maybe someday even speed up my toning process-- but for now, trying to find balance in the grays this way takes about 500% more time and I think it might possibly be looking MORE cluttered right now :-/ BUT, I'm sure this will improve the more I do it. Hopefully my pages will print out better now, too.
This strip and the previous one have been my first experiments with these new techniques. Hopefully you guys'll be seeing some significant quality improvement in the near future! |

I got hooked up with free tickets so I am in LA until the 8th, hanging out with Leslie and Team Atrox and my Pitzer College former suitemates: Corey, Isaac, Lindsay and I would have seen that whore Bianca but she was all "spending Independence Day with her family".
I am calling you on that bullshit, lady. You had better see me before I go.
Tomorrow is a Crazy Fruit party that I bought tart and punchy cornichons to try out.
It's Stupid O'clock, why am I still up?

Susan, Cat, Anne and I went strawberry pickin today!
I am especially pleased that Anne actually captured me in the process of spilling the fruits of my labor right as I tried to show them off.
It's amazing how thoroughly the heat zaps away my energy. I have been a complete cranky jerk ever since the heat wave started. Wait, is it really a heat wave? Or is this just Typical Summer Temperature and I'm being a big dramatic baby about it?
Prooooobably the latter.
But! It's so pretty out!
I just need to suck up my heat-induced bad mood and drink more water.
And maybe eat some strawberries.

That 'early birthday gift from my boyfriend' that I mentioned in yesterday's strip?
Here is a picture of it.
Matt got me my own cute waitress a Canon Rebel XT O.o
Nobody has ever gotten me such a nice gift before. It doesn't feel like it's really mine! I keep thinking the Real Owner is going to come and take it back. Until then, tho, I'ma gunna take as many pictures of my friends and cats as I possibly can.
I still don't really know how to use it yet! I have been taking more than my fair share of blurry, poorly-composed photos in my efforts to understand what all the settings mean.
Fortunately, the other day I went out to a cute French restaurant with some ladies and it turned out our waitress is a professional photographer so she helped me twirl some dials and adjust some doo-dads. (She takes some really pretty photos, by th' by)
What I'm trying to say is: Oh my lord, how thoroughly did I win the boyfriend lottery?
Pretty fuckin' thoroughly.

Hurg, not much to report. Portland is distractingly beautiful right now.
Oh yeah! I am turning 25 on June 25th, I guess that is sort of cool. So far I don't have any plans to celebrate it because I don't really feel like I have a reason to do anything special. Just another year!
Everyone congratulate Les McClaine on tonight's TV premiere of his comic, The Middleman! It made me laugh out loud. On multiple occasions.

Hey dudes, I got back from Queen's Kingdom on Friday night.
It was such an amazing trip. I can't even express how good it was. Way gooder than it had any business being.
I, uh, replied to, like, three emails while I was away (for three weeks) so now I've got about 160 to go through :-/
I'm working on tomorrow's DAR but I'm not sure if I'll get it up on time. It'll go up for sure, maybe just not in the morning?
