Thanks to all the people who have told me the Compromising Positions site is down--it is being worked on, I hope. [info]kernelm tells me it's something the hosting company did and now has to fix, and indeed they have fixed, I think, all of it but the Wordpress bits. Hopefully that will come soon. :)

PS: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog; Capt. Tightpants Hammer vs Doogie Howser Dr. Horrible, as conceived by Joss Whedon. Also, it's a musical. <3

...Also, probably inaccessible right now due to about a billion people trying to watch it at once, but I'm sure they'll fix it soon.

The auction will raise money for the fight against the California initiative which will legally destroy existing same-sex marriages and ban any further ones. If the initiative passes, it will write discrimination into the state constitution, annull existing marriages, and make Mr. Sulu cry.

Many wonderful things are being offered! Fic, metal dragons, wooden dildos, knitted hats! Bidding starts July 1st! Go check it out. :) My offer is here.

Project cancel cable TV status: FAIL

I thought, I am spending a ridiculous amount of money on cable to watch 4 shows I actually care about. I can get three of these shows from iTunes, and Doctor Who I can download illegally with the rest of the world. The last straw was realizing the only thing I'd really miss would be Ice Road Truckers. Dude. I am not paying that much money just so I can watch Ice Road Truckers. Especially now that the cute guy isn't on it anymore. Seriously now.

So I called Comcast. The first bit of unpleasantness was learning that without basic cable, my internet bill would go up by $15. And then they essentially cut my bill in half and I got to keep everything I have now. Which I shouldn't be complaining about, but argh. I feel somehow thwarted and dissatisfied. I think the main reason I caved was all the unwatched stuff I still have on my DVR.

I will have to revisit this in 12 months when all my discounts expire. Maybe I'll switch to DSL or maybe Verizon will have their fiber optic stuff available here by then. I was sort of looking forward to getting an AppleTV and forcing it do things it was never intended to do, like play avi files of gay Japanese vampires. Instead, I have bought an external hard drive, which is probably a better idea. I am now properly backed up for the first time ever in my life, or I will be when Time Machine finishes, which I'm thinking will be several days from now.

So, if you want to cut your cable bill, call up and tell them all about the wonders of iTunes. And if you want to cancel your cable, do not follow my example.

Ahaha. I am mildly concerned about some of those! Still, I don't have to write them all, or even most of them, and September is a long, long way away. And phone sex is never bad. If you want to sign up, btw, you have to do it by the 7th.

poetry, editing, man-eating plants

Many moths ago someone on my flist posted a poem that I meant to save and didn't. I read it a lot. I memorized bits of it. And then I thought of it again just recently, searched my computer, and found it missing. Halp? This is what I remember of it:

My lord, how beautifully you write
May I sleep with you tonight?
Till I...something something something
Till I flag, or when you wilt
We'll roll up something in one bed.
We'll roll up drunken in one quilt.

That's the best I can do. I did find this, but...I feel it's not the same translation? It's the same in some places obviously and maybe I'm misremembering, but it seems...changed to me.

In other news, my wrists seem a bit better but not as better as I'd like. I know this is because I keep abusing them by moving furniture and rocks and things. I've got to stop that. At least the inability to type gave me the chance to edit The Happy Pig, a story I've had sitting on my computer, finished, for about six months. Oh, editing. DO NOT WANT.

editing )

In other other news, I want to post a couple of my stories from the anonymous kink meme, but the amount of guilt I already have from not answering feedback is monumental, so I think that'll have to wait. Thank you so much for the lovely comments on the Happy Pig. I really appreciate it, and I will answer those comments eventually.

Also, I got a venus fly trap. I think I'm naming him Horace. I was reluctant to have carnivorous plants again because I have no balcony here, and they really like to be outside for the summer, but my mom says he can live at her house when it's warm enough. In return for all the heavy things I'm carrying for her, see.

dw if it ain't broke...
dear friends list,

I may be a little scarce for a while. I'm having some problems with my wrists. I have speech recognition software -- MacSpeech Dictate; I have named it Eugene -- but it's incredibly tedious to use, and pretty much impossible to write fiction with. I'll still read my friends list, of course, but I will not be so much with the comments, leaving or answering. So ends this public service announcement.

NSPs-- don't worry about the ficathon. both stories are done. And yes, this is why I haven't been in chat, sorry.

<3

PS: quite a year for plums is a good novel.Totally lacking in slash so far though.

Tagged by [info]daegaer for this here meme:
1. Choose a few of your own characters.
2. Make them answer the following questions.
3. Feel free to go ahead and add some questions yourself!
4. Then tag three people.

I assume this means original characters? Charles is from my Weiss Kreuz story, Here and Now. He's at Rosenkreuz with Crawford. Micah is from my story in Queer Magic. David is from a story that will be in the next issue of [info]bb_shousetsu if I get my act together in time.

Ken Robinson talking about creativity in education, or rather the lack of it. He's quite funny as well as being interesting and articulate (though not naked).

Bacon bowls, you guys. Bowls. Made of bacon.

Wars from WW2 to the present, reenacted with food. It's...oddly disturbing.

[info]saiyuki_manga, a new comm set up to share scans and translations of the Saiyuki manga. Apparently, it'll be about a month behind where they are in Japan, but hey, that's a whole lot better than Tokyopop is doing. And yeah, I know, there's Radio Free Banri, but I was always too lazy to do all the stuff they want you to do to see their posts, so I'm very happy to see this comm come along. Don't know if I'll actually read it all the time, because it's nice when some things are a surprise, but at least when the whole fandom is flailing over a new chapter, I'll be able to find out why. :)

First, I love this jewelry site, So Charmed. Someone on my flist mentioned it , but now I can't find the post, so thank you, whoever you are. Such pretty, shiny stuff.

***

Second, this past summer I sold a short story to go in an anthology from Iris Print. I didn't mention it here because I was waiting for the book to actually be published, not wanting to count my chickens before they hatched and all. However, I just got a mailing from the editor at Iris Print. It seems they're having financial problems:

To make print runs viable, it would take 150 pre-orders of Home On the Range, and 250 pre-orders of Queer Magic. Pre-orders will be available through January 31 for these books, and if the target numbers have not been reached at that point, the books will be officially cancelled, and all existing and new orders will be refunded.

Queer Magic is the one my story is in (along with a story by an awesome writer on my flist, whose name I won't mention because I don't think she's said anything about this publicly, but her story rocks!), so, you know, if you're at all inclined to buy a fantasy book with pretty boys macking on each other, perhaps you'd like to buy this one? :)

The pre-order page is here, along with writing samples from each of the stories. (Mine's The Hanged Man, btw.)
