The end of a story Sometimes, the epilogue to a story is longer than all the chapters put together. This was one of those times.
Thank you to all who helped. The slate is at last clear for new stories to unfold.
One conclusion I came to, with the help of one of you:
Trouble shared with a friend is trouble lessened. Trouble shared with the world is trouble gained.
This will serve me well in my coming adventures.
The next story There's a very unusual music group, 2NU, that I like. Most of their stuff is spoken word against music. This is the monologue from the song Crossroads:
CrossroadsYou've reached a crossroads in your journey. Which way to go now? I think to myself: If I go left, down this road... there's the risk of death and destruction, a life edged with fear and high adventure. And of course the possibility of total ruin. But if I go right, my life will be as if I was to spend eternity alone in a glorious field of beautiful flowers whose aroma would only remind me of good things, pleasant things. It would be a safe, peaceful existence. I would no that no harm would come to me ever. But would I be able to spend all time -- eternity -- in the safety of a place without the promise of a thrill, a kiss, a slap in the face, or the sweet, sweet taste of revenge against those who do me wrong? I dunno. Which way would you go? What road would you take? I am Nardo Polo, world's greatest marble player. And this is how it all began.
Suffice it to say that I chose left.

iPhone hacking for vampires Just seen on the show Moonlighting: a close-up of one of the main character's iPhone. With Installer.app icon on it, and other things that reveal that it's obviously hacked.
Let's be honest — is there anyone who owns an iPhone and hasn't hacked it?
(Secondary observation: the scene was filmed on the 12th of some unknown month, according to the calendar icon. What a strange science fiction world we live in.)

My name is Inigo Montoya. You are Chuck. Prepare to die. I am almost certain I just saw Mandy Patinkin (best known as Inigo) on the TV show Chuck. The particular accent is... sort of unmistakable. And, except for the addition of a mustache, it sure looked like the current photos of him on IMDB.
He's not listed in the credits... but they don't show many of the performers, and he was a minor character.
Wonder if I should submit it to IMDB...

Sarcasm kills I nearly choked to death laughing, when I saw this a moment ago on my TiVo's programme listings: "The Birds (1963) -- A playgirl follows a bachelor to Bodega Bay, where, for no apparent reason, birds kill."
Apparently, they don't have a strong editorial process for plot summaries.

Bouncy! So there was a 5.6 quake just a few miles from me at 8:05pm tonight. I was still at work, on the 2nd floor. The building started shaking like mad, growing over time. Took me about five seconds to figure out what was happening, and then I crawled under my desk for the remaining fifteen or twenty seconds.
When I got home, my downstairs neighbour (who's usually asleep by 7pm or so) asked me if I'd felt the "big jolt". She said that the whole building was making a cracking noise, and she was nervous that my apartment was going to fall into hers.
Inside, I found rather a lot of stuff on the floor. One picture off the hanger, another at a 30 degree angle, a frying pan that had been hanging on a hook now sitting in the kitchen sink next to the hook that used to be in the ceiling.
In all, it was great! Better than anything at Disneyland.
Still haven't seen Branwen since I got home. She didn't even come out when I opened the treat bag. I expect she's still hiding somewhere.

Because I couldn't resist... I decided to pour myself a spot of Bailey's on the rocks just a few moments ago. I had to rinse out a tumbler first, but when I turned on the faucet, water burst out from it at very high pressure, as if I'd popped a water balloon, drenching me and the bottle of Bailey's rather a bit.
Nonplussed but attempting not to show it, I turned to my cats (who were also rather perplexed at the sudden indoor rainstorm) and said "Well, *that* dampened my spirits!"

Amy - a random poem of the day Whilst I was surfing on the net I came to a blogger's page; Light pink fonts and purple backgrounds Told us Amy Roger's age
Our young Amy had a webcam, Didn't want to think what of Thought one false click is jail-bait, Gave the back button a shove.
Then I found to my dismay Amy'd opened a new window Which was showing nothing more Than an open innuendo.
Fast I clicked the little "X" Which then spawned three like websites I'll be sleeping in a cell With an awful case of bed mites.
I tried to close the browser Close all the windows; make them die Hard disk spins, nothing happens And that's just when the boss came by.

Is is just me or... ...is Mercury in Retrograde or something? People have been driving like maniacs for the past week or more. Typical scenario: * I make a right turn onto a surface street after watching to make sure the way is clear. * Suddenly, a car going 70mph in a 25mph zone zooms right up behind me and starts blaring his horn.
At any rate, it's been nice having a bit of respite from the rain, and to no longer be at odds with a sweetie who loathes inclement weather.
In other news, I'm finally getting my car fixed after the bucketed hit it last summer. ESurance is taking care of me well.

Jesus is coming
A bit earlier this morning, I saw a bumper sticker that read the following:
Jesus is coming soon!
Are you ready?
My immediate thought was "Well, I am using a dental dam!"

I'm teaching! I went in today for a class at the Tech Shop, which is a really cool open-access workshop with gobs of equipment. The class was unfortunately not being held due to a mix-up, but instead the folks there talked me into teaching a single-beam holography class.
I'm admittedly a little bit intimidated -- I haven't ever *officially* taught classes. But if it goes well, I may be able to set up a more sophisticated and permanent holography lab there! This seems reasonably likely, as there was a lot of interest in the class just among the people already at the Tech Shop.

Caveat: about S&S today I've been feeling overwhelmed and just depressed. I may not get the chance to clean up or go on the shopping spree for drinks like I usuaully do. If you're coming, a stop by the market for Virgil's root beer or anything else would be gladly appreciated. OTOH, just company is good.

Cats + Cotton Candy = FUN! Last week (year), I bought a miniature cotton candy machine. Does a marvelous job, and it's a lot of fun.
After rolling by first successful full-size cotton candy pouf, I decided to try Preia on it. She had been very curious about what I was doing, and was winding around my legs. I bent over and offered the end of the cotton candy to her... and she sniffed it with great interest for fifteen seconds or so. Then she rubbed it with her cheek. And THEN, with no warning or anything, she raised up on her hind legs and dug both front paws into the pouf and pulled two vaguely symmetrical strands out towards her, playing with them.
I think I've stopped laughing now. Which is good. Breathing is good.

I want just a plain, vanilla television... ...but on my PC. I bought the Diamond XtremeTV PVR560, thinking that, apart from nifty new features like DVR, it would also do what the OLD tv tuner cards did: just let you watch tv or a/v sources. Unfortunately, the software supplied with it is BeyondTV, which is an all-or-nothing solution (tv tuner + DVR). I HAVE a tivo. I just want my PC to be a "dumb" TV.
Does anyone know of software (free or not) that will work with my card to do just that? Am I better off returning it and getting a different card with "dumber" software? Is Saddam really dead for good, or will he come back to life and take over Canada as predicted by Trey Parker and Matt Stone?

When is a SATA not a SATA? Okay, so I bought my first SATA drive on an after-ecksmas sale at Fry's. I have a motherboard that does both IDE and SATA, and I have a power cable to supply the sata.
I went back to Fry's this morning to buy a SATA cable. Apparently I accidentally bought a SATA to eSATA, not having any clue about such things.
The tricky bit, though, is that neither end fits neatly into either the hd or the motherboard. The power cable and SATA connector fight for space on the back of the HD.
Is there a third type of SATA connector I should be looking for?
This is the manual to my motherboard

No police or bullies of any kind, please I just want to make it perfectly clear, to those of you who might not get this.
Calling the cops on me will:
* make ANY situation worse, not better, without exception * ensure that I will NEVER speak to you again, no matter how close our friendship/relationship was
Comments disabled because I really don't want to talk about it. I'm done with the dry-heaving vomiting now, at least. The shock is settling in, but I'm still really jumpy.
Have I mentioned how much I really, really hate being bullied by cops? And how much that doesn't help a delicate emotional state?

Real milkshakes Some of my past partners, such as megalion, may occasionally be heard reminscing about my milkshakes, I'm told. The ingredients rarely alter much:
1. A few lightly packed scoops of vanilla ice cream (you can pick a high quality brand if you like, but a fairly cheap store brand like Lucerne will still get big "YUM"s from adults) in a glass much larger than the one you're serving in. 2. Pour milk in to about 2/3 or 3/4 of the way up the ice cream. Better to start with too little milk than too much. 3. Add any flavourings you want, like ground chocolate, torani syrups, caramel, irish cream or other liqueur. 4. Mash the ice cream almost like you would potatoes. Use a real milkshake stirrer of some kind if you like. If you really want to shake some air in, use a martini shaker and wrap a towel around it, holding the top on tight, and shake like hell. 5. Serve in a glass sized just right for the amount of milkshake you've made. Toss any unused portion into another glass for sharing.
I believe that future Sips & Snuggles may feature a milkshake tutorial and/or restaurant-style maker.
And yes, I am sitting here enjoying a Bailey's milkshake -- why do you ask? ; )

Want Halloween help? I used to do some pretty fun stuff for halloween trick or treaters, from floating wands to low-lying fogs (fog machine with the fog being pushed through dry ice so it sticks to the ground) to mad-scientist time travel crawl-through exhibits as part of a cardboard box maze...
Is anyone doing something fun (or wants me to for them) for this halloween, and would like my help? We're running low on days, but I honestly work best that way. :)
