12:10PM

Well, I guess I should update sometime (plus I noticed that *somebody* who shall remain nameless listed me first on their friend blog list...and I NEVER update... I swear I'll try harder).
Actually, the real reason I don't update is because I'm to busy being wicked and lazy!

Nothing really too new has been happening with me: same job and same living situation.
I'm going to Florida in 2 weeks to visit my retired father. I'm hoping the security lines at the airport will mellow out by then; but what I'm really excited about is the WARM weather! It's already getting cold up here in Seattle. My father and step mother have kayaks and they said its *pretty* safe as long as you don't get too close the the crocodiles. I like adventures, but I'm not too keen on getting killed like that one professor from UW. He got eaten up by a croc (or something like that).
I'm searching for a new job, the specifications for said job are: minimal computer work (carpel tunnel is a bitch), somewhat intellectually stimulating (my standards are so low), minimal customer service and no dealing with angry people, government/non-profit preferred, ...um a nice, non-A type personality boss. Basically something to hold me over until I figure out what grad program I want to do and get into said grad program. Note to friends: bother me about studying for the GRE, then maybe I'll actually do it.

Also I'm typing on a NEW Ibm Thinkpad laptop. It is awesome.

What the rest of the day holds for me: yard work involving spreading dirt over newspaper in our garden beds (this is actually a secret scheme of my mothers to create the largest kitty litter box EVER and so enabling them take over the world), watching Morgan Spurlock's tv show on FX at 2:00pm where an atheist has to stay with a (fundamental?) Christian family, learning how to put a wireless card into a computer from my bro (this is a calling to all my computer savvy friends that Emily needs help learning more about computers), and I will be frolicking in the sun sometime today (why didn't I ever sunbath IN California?).

Hopefully this will satisfy some of you and be proof that Emily is literate :-)

8:10PM - Exercise

I think I’m turning into one of those exercise freaks I used to despise. Though, my derision comes partly from absolutely hating PE in elementary school.
Within the past 7 days I have:
*ridden my bike to work 4 times (My hate for oil companies initiated it).
*bought a kayak and have kayaked at least 4 times this week (around 6 to 8 hours).
*I went to a pro-choice run and ran/walked around 3 miles (and got horribly sunburned).

Or maybe it’s just the REALLY, REALLY good weather we are having that has initiated this sudden onslaught of outdoor activity.

Wrap up statement: does anybody want to go hiking?!?

3:02PM - The most common passwords

This came up in a LJ conversation so here is the list:

god, love, lust, money, private, qwerty, secret, sex, snoopy, & password.

I think I've actually thought of using qwerty and password at some point (though I never did) :)
I'm sooo normal!

There are some (*alot of*) really interesting/scary sites out there specifically geared toward cracking passwords!
now I have to go and change all of mine....

2:49PM - Bad Pickup Lines

At a desert bar at Claremont Mckenna College I had a guy come up to me and ask "What desert looks good enough to wear?"

Another bad one I received was "I don't have any STD's!"

After all these alarmingly unsavory pickup lines I looked up a few other bad ones just for the heck of it:)

"If I could rearrange the alphabet, I'd put you between F and CK"
"I have four words for you hol i day inn."
"I lost my virginity. Can I have yours?"
"Hey...... Didn't I see your name in the dictionary under KABLAAM?"
"My love for you is like diarrhea. I can't hold it in."

2:53PM - RAIN

This is the 26th straight day of rain in Seattle. Apparently the news stations are already rooting for Seattle to beat the record made in 1953 of 33 days of straight rain. Maybe if we win we’ll get a day off of work because workers will be so depressed that we will need it.

10:28PM - Harry Potter

These questions have been floating around live journal and I thought I would answer it for my one and only fandom: Harry Potter.
1. The first character you first fell in love with:
Harry, yes I know its boring but I empathized with him.

2. The character you never expected to love as much as you do now:
Hermoine: she was always a side character for me but she gets some good fic written about her.

3. The character everyone else loves that you don't:
Ron, I kindof find him a bland character.

4. The character you love that everyone else hates:
Voldemort, I started loving him after the last movie… :)

5. The character you used to love but don't any longer:
Snape, but I’m sure I’ll get back into him

6. The character 'ship everyone else loves that you don't:
Anything with Sirius/Remus/James/lily/ect. I just can’t get into the older generation. Though I’m also fascinated with and completely squicked out by Harry/voldemort (it has a small, hardcore following).

7. The character 'ship you love that everyone else hates:
Hermione/Draco, Hermoine/Blaise (now canon woot!)

12:24PM - Peru

So i'm finally updating my livejournal! and since I keep getting inqueries about my trip I thought I should go into detail about what I did. The first day of my "Peru Trip" involved two airplane flights, a 7 hour layover in Texas where I wrote "winter solstice" cards, and I had at most 5 hours of disjointed sleep. When I arrived in Lima, Peru I followed the herd since that seemed like the most rational thing to do and considering that everybody I asked questions to in English looked at me weirdly and spouted something off in Spanish. I spent about a 1/2 hour in multiple lines in imagration and got absolutely no where as Peruvians don't believe in lining up. This is where Nathan found me (thank the non-existant god) despite the fact that his flight from Equador came in an hour or two after mine.

My first experience of Peru was seeing hundreds of people lined up in the airport waiting for family members or waiting to sell something to foreigners. It was kind of scary since it felt mob-esque. Thankfully we had already set up a taxi ride (as it's a bad idea to get a taxi ride at night). We arrived at a hostel we had reservations with at 11:30, who promptly stated they were full. So they sent us to another hostel where we got a huge TV and nasty wet beds (our sleeping bags were handy for this problem). I didn't really sleep as I was paranoid that we were going to miss our flight so I woke Nathan up at 3:30 and we caught the same taxi at 4:00 for our separate flights that left for Cuzco at 7ish. We arrived in Cuzco without any problems, got to our hostel which actually honored our RSVP and we slept until 12.

From our Taxi cab driver I discovered the only thing Peruvians will stop for is speed bumps. Traffic rules (like stop signs, white lines, etc.) are suggestions that if you're not going to follow them, ie. if your going to drive through a stop sign all you have to do is honk to warn other drivers. you can also honk at tourists to ask if they want a ride. Pedestrians have no rights and Its survival of the fittest. Considering my job, I kept wondering if you could even buy insurance there.
I will post more installments as soon as I possibly can and also I will post pictures, as soon as I figure out how :)

9:53PM - The Media, Katrina, and Hiroshima

I thought it was laughable when news anchors used ‘large’ words like apocalyptic, wrath, and utter devastation to describe Hurricane Katrina’s path. I mean really! They never sound intelligent as it is, but adding in these words just made them sound awkward. I can just imagine the memo that went out stating that they should use these words to describe Katrina.

I thought it couldn’t get any worse, however that was when they decided to correlated Katrina with Hiroshima. (I heard it from at least two separate news stations). Do they not know that the United States caused Hiroshima? I can understand their rational in trying to correlate the ‘horror’ that occurred due to Katrina with the end all, ultimate example of ‘utter devastation,’ however in doing so they conveniently whitewashed history of violence perpetuated by the United States.

I do not even want to get into the problems with correlating the victims of Hiroshima with the victims of Katrina. (one obvious response is HA! You can’t compare them!)

I hope nobody from Japan knew about this inappropriate appropriation of Hiroshima because I am very embarrassed that the U.S. news could say something so idiotic.

On a positive note, the news is providing a WONDERFUL critique of President Bush. (Though him doing a bad job means an increasing body count, which is not so good.) I hope bush never bounced back from this LOVELY feeding frenzy :)

9:25PM - Nerd

Pure Nerd
56 % Nerd, 21% Geek, 13% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

Congratulations!

Also, you might want to check out some of my other tests if you're interested in either of the following:

5:04PM - AAA

I get paid to study to pass the test to get a Property and Casualty License (as AAA sells personal auto and home insurance).
50% of the ppl who take the exam pass it. I knew going in that I was just on the cusp of passing and so obviously I only passed 3 out of the 4 sections, failing by 2% (which probably means I got one wrong question over the cutoff mark). I was congratulated the next day for passing three parts, which was a little odd.
Next Thursday I will hopefully pass the 1 part I failed (thankfully I don’t have to take the entire test over again). I think I have about 2 to 4 weeks more of training.(lots of training!! lol)
The people at triple A are pretty nice. And there are alot of interesting people who get insurance :)

10:47PM - Movies

I went to go see War of the Worlds. I found it entertaining and I thought the special effects were done well (as I usually hate computer graphics in movies but not in this one).

However
I thought the army was portrayed in a positive light, which made me think this movie was just another advertisement for the army along with the multitudes of movie commercials and classified ads for the army. The pristine image of the army is contradictory to the mild exploration of human nature that goes on during this movie (for example most of the characters are not wholly likeable). Off the top of my head I know three people who are in the army reserve, so I’m not completely anti-army and know that most of them joined b/c of financial reasons. But pro-army sentiment at a time like now would be saying yay go off and die in a pointless war.

I should stop watching movies. J
Anybody know of any good books I should read?

5:19PM - Father's Day

For Father’s Day, I went out with my mother and a bunch of older women vaguely related to me (as in most of them are my mom’s cousins…or something like it and she had not seen them since she was 9 years old).

I learned important facts like my mother wasn’t told that her father was previously married until she was 33 years old. My mom additionally had an uncle who worked at a carnival (one my mother’s father obviously never mentioned because it was so shameful) and my mom randomly met him when he was a patient at the hospital she worked at where he recognized her name. One lady had survived breast cancer and since she lives in Seattle we might visit museums together. Another 50-60 year old lady likes to bike (as in peddle a bicycle) from Seattle to Portland for fun. That gave me incentive enough to exercise for at least that day.

We all met at Ray’s Boathouse and had an all women’s Father’s Day Brunch, where all the entrees were over $20 each but luckily my Great Aunt Margaret was paying. I couldn’t have had a better day, despite the fact that I had to talk to my dad (I believe I was probably the only one of my siblings that actually did talk to him that day) where he told me I should become a Lawyer,… or a doctor, specifically his doctor in Florida for when he retires there.
