questions

1. i would like to start volunteering with animals in some way. but i wonder if jack would freak out if i came home smelling like other cats and dogs. i don't want to upset him, especially in the fall during his time when he usually gets sick.

2. if you were reading a book that was supposed to take place in 1994, what kinds of things would indicate that to you?

the best passive aggressive note ever, because it's actually pretty aggressive

seen in our second-floor hallway:

There was a bunch of dogshit right here. I'm cleaning it up now. (--Dave4FL)

WTF?????

this note was written by my neighbor who owns diamond bar. i would bet money that the dogshit came from the dogs of the girl and guy who did the backshaving downstairs. my favorite part is the WTF.

i'm watching heavenly creatures right now. it's not as good as i thought it would be. but i've had it from netflix for forever now.

last night allison and i saw the women, which was also not as good as i thought it would be. mostly i was disturbed by how annette bening looks great at 51 while meg ryan looks like a fucking freakshow at 48. i was ashamed for her, that she thought that so much plastic surgery would be a good thing. she just looks bizarre.

after spending a while writing at verb this afternoon, i went into catbird and saw a bag that i really, really loved for $350. no. not going to happen. but it was nice. and then i tried to go to beacon's closet but didn't want to check my bag with my laptop, so i had to leave.

jon and i finally threw out the air conditioner that's been broken since last june, which is a victory.

he's out assisting his friend peter photographing a sweet sixteen and i'm very much enjoying a saturday night at home alone. coming up after the movie's over: vacuuming! dishes! cleaning the bathroom! reading a book they want me to promote on the olive reader! maybe another movie (cache)! maybe a whiskers post! maybe more on the novel!

it's the fall weather. it makes me feel totally 100% alive. this summer was really very bearable weather-wise but nothing compares to fall.

mccain's choice of sarah palin was the nail in the coffin for my dad, and he is now voting for obama.

although he does think she's hot.

also, i took all your opinions seriously and am excited to present:

it needs a little tinkering, so think of this as the special lj preview. i hope to become your main source for wacky cat news.

jon and i watched the premiere of fringe last night and we liked it. nothing earth-shattering but it kept my interest and there were some good moments.

i turned down free mr softee and am instead eating those tiny grapes you find on cheese plates. champagne grapes? currant grapes? not sure what they are called. i like tiny food.

thoughts on the rnc:
jon: i always thought joe lieberman's voice would be more jewish, but instead he just sounds like willie from ALF.

an important thing that my mom called to tell me:
my cousin, who is 26, super skinny, very pretty, and a gym teacher, got breast implants. but not just any breast implants. no, she flew out to california to get robert rey from dr 90210 to do them. and i think her ex-bf paid for them. also she is on leave from gym teaching and doing something with hair salons.

the rehearsal dinner:

the rehearsal itself went pretty quickly. ann marie carried the ghastly bouquet i made for her at her shower. the priest who performed the wedding was very young and adorable and it was his first wedding. he mentioned that he had asked his priest friends for advice and suggestions. towards the end, he mentioned that he would be around for a while for confession in case anyone needed to confess before taking communion the next day, and jen got a text message from her sister (sitting on the other side of the altar) saying "i can't go to confession with him. i'll go to hell for molesting a priest!"

the dinner itself took forever. it was at rudar club, a croatian place in queens, and they didn't seem to care that AM and bob had asked them to make it a quick dinner. there was at least half an hour between each course, but the food was pretty good--nothing special but solidly good. the best/worst part was when we first got there. i don't remember if i ever wrote about it in here, but at the beginning of the bachelorette party, gill, allison, and i were waiting in the hotel lobby for jen. allison and i were sitting and gill was standing. all of a sudden she started scratching at her neck and i saw something fly off--a giant waterbug that had fallen from the ceiling. gill was horrified, but we all promised not to tell ann marie in order not to ruin her bachelorette party. anyway, at rudar, gill put her bag down in a corner when we got there. five minutes later when she went to get it, there was an almost-dead waterbug next to it, on its back with its little legs in the air. she looked nervously at the chandeliers for the rest of the night but was ok once she was plied with wine. allison and i made plans to meet up the next morning and went home.

the day of the wedding:
i was supposed to wake up at 7:35. instead, i woke up at 8:30 to allison ringing my doorbell. she called ann marie to redo our plans while i showered, and we jumped in a car service to meet everyone at studio z in bayside to get our hair and makeup done. this was . . . an adventure. ann marie's hair looked great. allison got her hair done by the owner, and hers looked great, too. mine was done by an extremely gay, 40ish hispanic man named ernesto who did a great job but freaked a little when i told him my hair was too high and i wanted it flatter. but he did it anyway. jen and gill had problems though. the owner spotted jen halfway through the process and re-did her hair. gill's hair got redone five minutes before we left because it was weirdly bumpy. and the makeup woman, who had a terrible stripey raccoon blond dye job, took forever and used the makeup like it was spackle, but it all worked out in the end, albeit 30-45 min later than it was supposed to, and we left. going to the car a woman and her husband shouted out "congratulations" to ann marie from their balcony and told her it was their anniversary, which was sweet.

we got to the hotel and i made everyone turkey, mozzarella, and tomato sandwiches in the space of five minutes which we wolfed down, and then we got dressed and got in the limo, all in less than 45 minutes. and then it was off to the church!

the actual wedding was a lot quicker than i thought it would be, even though it was a full mass (though allison's mom later said they left some stuff out). before i knew it, it was over, and we all gathered outside to blow bubbles and take pictures. then everyone else left and there were more pictures. then the entire bridal party plus the bride and groom (10 people) piled into a limo meant for maybe 7 people and went over to flushing meadows park to take pictures. this was a part that could have sucked but didn't, largely because everyone was in a good mood and by this point all of us bridesmaids were pretty tight (i mean, aside from me and allison who were already tight, obviously) and we were having fun with the groomsmen in the limo. i was the only one not drinking, mostly out of sheer terror that i would spill something on my dress (jen's dress had already suffered from the flower girl and the bubbles). we took a bunch of pics, including some with a police horse and some with two little girls who were gazing longingly at us (one of them, after being allowed to hold a bouquet, told AM "you look really cute today"), and then got back in the limo where we also had to come to blows with another wedding party that was leaving terrace on the park as we pulled up. so we waited in the parking lot for a while and then went in.

we went straight to the bridal suite off the main reception area, where we had our own food and drinks and bathroom. after relaxing and stuffing our faces for a while, we went down to the cocktail hour briefly and then came back up to wait for our grand entrance into the reception.

the rest of it is almost a blur of dancing and drinking. the entire bridal party met at the bar for shots after the speeches, and i think there was at least one bridesmaid on the dance floor the entire night, if not three or four. i am not a great dancer, but i am not terrible, and the band was awesome and we just had a lot of fun, getting really into it. the best part of the evening was the slide show, which had photos not only of ann marie and bob but of me and gill and allison and andy and kate and oj, ann marie's cat.

of the food, the best parts were the penne vodka from the cocktail hour and the viennese dessert table which had every kind of dessert you could possibly imagine.

the number one thing that i did not expect to enjoy as much as i did was carrying a bouquet. i want to carry a bouquet around every day. also, wearing the same dress as three other people wasn't weird at all. in fact, i kind of liked being easily identifiable as a bridesmaid, like, everyone knew that the bridesmaids were on the dance floor the whole time and having fun and stuff.

anyway, the best part is the photos (photos of rehearsal dinner and getting ready to come from allison):

http://jezebel.com/5040032/we-love-cheap-stuff-but-fast-fashion-is-hard-to-defend

that article makes me really mad. aside from the fact that i take offense as a devoted forever21 shopper, i think it's really classist to assume that everyone can drop a ton of money on a few "classic pieces" to wear for years. for a lot of people, it is cheap knockoff clothes or nothing, and for a lot more people (me included), they'd rather have five dresses for $100 than one dress for $100. i have $10 shirts from forever21 that i have worn literally more than a hundred times, and more expensive things that i've worn once and then decided i hated.

the comments are ok though. just the article itself.

oh, and jon and i decided and we will definitely be going to san francisco sometime this fall. jon needs to figure out his schedule with work traveling and exhibits that he's curating, but it will be either the last week of november or the first week of december.

novel update

just got an email from my friend who works at the literary agency and he said he is halfway through and really likes it. don't know what that will mean in the end but it is nice. seriously, i was afraid he would read it and really hate it and lose all respect for me. which would be awkward since jon and i are sharing a hotel room with him and ari for three nights at joe and liz's wedding.

this saturday is ann marie's wedding. i tried to take a picture of myself in my bridesmaid's dress the other night after i got it back from the tailor but i was having flash problems so it'll have to wait until the actual wedding. it looks much better now that the top is not loose and it is slightly shorter (like half an inch or something, but it makes a difference since it was hitting at a really weird spot before). also i lost 4.5 lbs so i can breathe in it now. (i didn't lose the weight for the wedding or anything, i just started trying to eat better). i still need to decide if i'm going to get some cheap white shoes from payless or go with my silver ones (AM is providing flipflops for the reception so they don't need to be that comfortable).

they finally posted heather's job. so if you know anyone who wants to work in publishing . . .

ok, i know i talk about this all the time and we never do it, but it's looking like jon and i will ACTUALLY TAKE A VACATION. it'll be the first week of december, and it'll be to either barcelona or san francisco. i know it seems like two random destinations, but it's really coming down to a money thing. based on a lot of factors, SF would be at the very least $500 cheaper per person and possibly more (depending on how much more expensive food and activities would be in barcelona, that $500 number is just airfare and hotel expenses).

other things influencing the decision:
jon and i have both been to SF before. but we both like it. and when i was there, i didn't get to do all the stuff i wanted to.

neither of us have been to barcelona. but though i really really want to go, jon is more ambivalent.

weather is fine (50s) in both places, though according to the internet, SF is extremely rainy (SF people, is this true? how rainy is it?)

SF is a shorter flight, we can fly direct for not much more money

as much as i want to visit barcelona, SF would prob be a much more relaxing trip because it's still the US and we speak the language (i speak spanish, but not regularly in years)

i think we would enjoy eating more in san francisco (eating in spain was a hassle, everything had ham in it, we had a few excellent meals but most were ehh, whereas in SF we could go to in n out burger and eat lots of mexican food, things that we enjoy very much).

thoughts?

so i ate korean food, and it was good. we ordered a shrimp dumpling appetizer, bulgogi, and a short ribs dish. the only bad thing was that the dumplings that we got appeared to be pork dumplings instead. the bulgogi was okay and the short ribs were excellent. making my own little lettuce wraps reminded me of making tacos, and i liked the vinegary taste of most of the sides/condiments (in particular there was this really good orange-colored paste that both adrienne and i really liked). i don't know that i would make a special effort to go back (partly because this place was on 35th st, not an area i am usually in), but if someone else suggested it i would say yes.

afterwards we went to twins and i had two drinks! twins is the only bar in pretty much the entire city where i could easily order five drinks. the drinks are just always perfect, i don't know what it is.

then this morning jack woke me up and was very insistent about me being awake, whereas normally he wakes you up just so he can snuggle for a few minutes. turns out it was because he had puked/had a furball on the floor. i like to think he wanted me awake so i wouldn't step in it.

erica LOVES ferris wheels.

erica LOVES ferrish wheels. , originally uploaded by quiggles.

when we got to our room at bally's, i saw a ferris wheel way down the boardwalk out the window and immediately insisted we go ride it.

atlantic city was very interesting. the theme of the weekend was getting lost, as nothing in the casinos was adequately labeled and everything seemed designed (i'm sure on purpose) to get you so confused that you just give up and play slots. the town itself was a mix of super mall-ness and seedyness, and every indoor place was either too cold or smelled like smoke (except boardwalk hall, which was hot because of 10,000 people being inside). and the beach was the grossest ever (with spiders!)

but the show itself was amazing. carly was my favorite (she sang an evanescence song that i always thought she should sing, crazy on you which is one of my favorite songs ever, and i drove all night), but everyone was good except for kristy lee cook. in particular, carly, michael, and syesha really got a lot more relaxed and natural on stage. only two things could have made it better: if david cook had sang always be my baby, and if i had gotten a picture of the 12-year-old girl wearing a shirt with david archuleta and her face photoshopped onto a bride's body.

when i got home from atlantic city today, i heard some people out in the trash yard. i know i've mentioned how our next-door neighbors take their three dogs out there to pee, so i assumed it was them. i was correct, but they weren't just out there with the dogs. no, she was shaving his back. if you click on the photo and then click on all sizes you can see the razor in her hand.

i really want to blow this photo up and hang it above our mailboxes with "stop it" written underneath.

boring news about my life:

last night i went to the gym and then realized i hadn't brought a pair of sneakers. i actually thought about working out in my sandals (i could easily do the bike in them, they're flats) but decided not to be a weirdo and went home to do tae-bo. then i got on a cleaning kick. i went through all my books and listed some on paperbackswap (four of which have already been claimed!) and came up with a solution for a problem we've been having. jon is working on this project that involves buying a lot of 80s movies on vhs (side note: if you have any, let me know, jon will buy them from you) and we had no place to put them. so as i was reorganizing a space for them, what did i find?

our sex and the city complete dvd set

under a pile of vice magazines.

that we thought was lost forever.

jon was very excited.
