Tuesday, 10th May 2005.
I met Tori Amos. I went to her soundcheck. Then I went to her concert.
Soundcheck / Meet & Greet:
It was fan-fucking-tastic!!
Tori was running an hour or two late, so when we got there at appointed
time, there were all these people lining up. We were like, 'WTF?!'. So,
I asked the lady behind the counter what was going on. Surely they
couldn't all be going to the soundcheck?
She didn't know. None of the people who worked there did.
So, we lined up, too. There was a general hush, then everybody ran up
the stairs, and into the foyer. Tori was sitting at a little table,
signing things, and there were people everywhere.
I spotted my friend Aaron just after Tori left, and asked him what was
going on. Apparently, Tori was running late, and the M&G outside
that was supposed to happen about 3pm got moved inside to 5:30pm. OK.
Cool. They're not all coming to the soundcheck.
We managed to track down Wendy who works for Sony, and she told us to
be back in an hour, and the soundcheck would be happening then.
6:30pm: Meet back at appointed time. Chelsea comes out, and leads us
into the concert hall. We're told to take a seat. I sat front row of
course, only slightly off centre. 15 mins later, Tori comes out. Says
hello, her organ's been fixed now, and that she should be able to pull
the night off.
Does Mother Revolution. "I don't know if I'm going to do this one tonight, so I'm just going to test it out here, alright? You're my guinea pigs." Father Lucifer. At the end, she nodded once to herself, than said "yeah. I'll do it. (looking up to the sound desk) Can you add that, and print it out?"
Then she waved and said she'd see us in a minute.
6:45pm: Chelsea leads us down into the warren of corridors under QPAC
into Tori's green room. There is a barrier there, so the room is cut in
half. But they can't fool us. We smell food. There is a buffet on the
other side.
6:50pm: Tori comes in, by herself, no bodyguard, nothing. She needed a
minute to get changed, she says. (The soundcheck she was wearing what
she would be wearing on stage.) Then she says hello, and asks the first
couple of people to come forward. The rest of us kind of talk amongst
ourselves, much to Tori's amusement, I think. We all got to talk to her
for a few minutes, and she signed some stuff, then we got a photo with
her. Chelsea took the photos, and Wendy was holding the stuff we had to
sign whilst we were getting photos done.
Michelle's highlight of the day:
Dude: Tori! Tori! You're my cocaine!
Tori: *Rolls Eyes*
Concert:
8:45pm: Arrive back at QPAC, and make our way to the bar (of course),
although I don't have time to stop for a drink. Wendy (Sony rep)
assured us earlier on that Tori would be on stage at 8:45. Go to merch
stand and buy programme. Then make our way to our seats. Approx 25 rows
back, but can still see stage very clearly, thanks to the fact that
QPAC's concert hall is designed like an ampitheatre.
People start filing in, and the seats are quickly filled.
9:00pm: The house lights dim, and there is a lot of clapping and foot stamping on the wooden floors. Tori enters, stage right.
She does her little bow, and then takes her seat at the Bosey...
Original Sinsuality. Only a little longer than the album version, but she does the 'Yaldaboath..' line twice.
"Hi everybody, how's it going?" Thunderous applause and 'yeah!'s'.
"You know I nearly didn't make it here because of my daughter. She was nearly arrested this afternoon in Sydney." Laughter. "No,
I'm serious. The people at customs asked her to take off her shoes. And
in her typical fashion, she refused. "But why Mummy?" I'm not the one
asking you to take your shoes off. The nice airport man is. "But why?"
And at this point, my nanny, who's Australian. She's a Tassie girl, she
looks at me like 'She's got a mind of her own.' So, I ask her again to
take off her shoes. "But why Mummy?" Because I said so you little
Arsenal supporter! Now, I'm thinking to myself, how am I going to
explain this to the Brisbane-ites - 'Look, I know it's been 11 years,
but I can't come up, because of this bloody kid.' I mean what am I
going to do with her? Send her to Bali?"
Does Father Lucifer with a little smile on her face the whole way
through. The mic has some static or something, because it's kind of
crackling on the 'nothing's gonna stop...' lines. Just those lines. But
it's ok. I can deal with it.
Does the other songs, one right after the other. Sometimes they
overlap.
Some people leave. Old ones. They obviously mistook Tori for Norah
Jones or something...
Then, the opening of Happy Phantom. The crowd goes nuts. Tori seems to
be bouncing to the song, and at one point, start shaking her hips at
the crowd.
The hexagonal screen goes black - Tori's Piano Bar.
Tori leans down to get a couple of lyric sheets, and to get something to eat.
"So,
I was in a department store in Sydney. And there was this woman playing
the piano. And I thought to myself 'I know that job. That could've been
my job.' And anyway, we usually do a thing where I take requests, but
we're not going to be doing that tonight. Husband likes that about me.
I'm unpredictable. He doesn't care what I do, as long as he doesn't
have to know about it. I did get some really good ones for here, but I
feel, here, with you, you have a certain energy. So, we're going to
create a space, here, and in our hearts, for someone. She needs our
love and our strength. Tonight is for Schapelle Corby. We'll hold a
candle in our hearts for her."
We Belong was excellent. And during Walk Away Renee, Tori was crying.
She was trying hard not to break, but occasionally, her voice would
give out. We assumed that We Belong was for Schapelle Corby, but Walk
Away Renee was for Renae (I can't remember her last name) from the Bali
9.
Tonight Dougnut Song was the Tori song that
just-when-you-think-it's-finished-it-keeps-going. Now, I don't know if
other versions have been that long, but this one went for nearly 10
minutes.
Tori was playing on the organ, and she played little bits from Witness.
I got all exicted, then she changed it, and I was kind of disappointed.
It was Jamaica Inn. The highlight of that song was 'the sexiest thing
is trust..'. Otherwise, I was kind of 'eh' to the whole thing, and
wanted it to be over.
Snow Cherries from France got off to a fine start. The mic had
feedback, just as she finished the line '..who would not share his
bike.' "Oops, that should have been 'would not share his mic'. Let's try again, shall we?"
Two pirate songs in a row. Tori obviously picked up on it, because as
she sang the pirate line from SCFF, she emphasised 'pirates' and kind
of grinned at the audience. Stupid me, I thought she would have done
'Pirates' next. lol
Bells for Her was beautiful. I think. I don't know. I had my boyf in my
ear. "What song's this?" "ssshhh" "But what song is it?" But, of what I
actually heard, it was beautiful. It was the only song of the night on
the Rhodes. Incidentally, the Rhodes was facing the audience..
The Beekeeper came around far too quickly for my liking. But, when she
started it, I kind of resigned myself to sitting there for 15 minutes
while she did the song. But she kept it short.
Tori kind of skipped off stage, and she got a standing ovation.
She skipped back on. Your cloud. She did something to the second verse,
but I can't remember it. Boyf struck again.
Tear in your hand. My boyf actually knew this one, so I got to enjoy it
in quiet. (He's a Neil Gaiman fan, and any Tori song where he is
mentioned, he knows. He practically ripped the programme out of my
hands when I said the foreword was written by Neil.) It was much slower
than the original.
Skipped out, standing ovation, skipped back on.
Amber Waves. Tori seemed to actually get a kick out of this one,
bouncing around her stool from Bosey to organ and back again. The crowd
loved this one. So did I. Liked it much better than I did the WTSF
version.
And finally... Toast.
Now, either, half the people who were there didn't bother to buy TBK,
or they just didn't like the song, I don't know. But when she started
it, there was only a smatter of applause. Even when she started
singing. The same thing happened at the start of Beekeeper. It was a
nice ending, though.
I thouroughly enjoyed myself.
9 out of 10. It would have had another one, but for Jamaica Inn.
