21st Century Yom

October 9th, 2008 (10:59 am)
current location: chelsea coffee company
Feeling: yom-ing

I am experiencing 21st Century Judaism.

I didn't go to temple today.  The local synagogue wanted $150 for High Holidays tickets and wouldn't negotiate.  Ridiculous.

So I still took the day off, but I am at a local coffee shop, using their Wifi, and working on the two midterm papers I have due at the end of this week.

I brought my headphones so I can listen to Temple Israel of Miami's live Yom Kippur service, which is being broadcast through their website.

Pretty awesome.

Just don't tell anyone I'm having coffee.  I'm staying away from the baked goods.  Hashem understands caffeine addiction.

Republican Messaging

October 2nd, 2008 (11:25 am)

So I've noticed a new activity the local Republicans have taken up.

They have set up these flea market-esque tents in the major intersections around town to sell McCain yard signs and t-shirts.

They have hot pink ones for Palin.

Anyway, what I found most humorous were the locations where they chose to set up shop.

One is in the parking lot of former (they moved down the block) and thus empty bail bonds office.

The other is in an abandoned gas station.

I know there's a metaphor there somewhere.

Way to sell your message, guys.

A poll: where to put SF in my library?

September 30th, 2008 (10:21 am)

We're trying to move some things around in the library.  We have limited space, so we have issues with finding space for everything.  Right now, we have a small shelf on the edge of YA, next to the Audio, for Science Fiction and Fantasy.  I find most patrons go straight to Fiction to look for their favorite SF authors, only to come to me asking where the books are.  Personally, I'd like to move all the SF in with the Fiction and claim that extra shelf for YA, which doesn't really have it's own space, because I want to give the teens a space of their own.

So I put it to you, my dear SF loving friends.  What do you think?
