So, the scariest thing for me about House isn't the way it's eaten my brain. It's the way it's eaten my brain and only spits out genfic. Still, it's scary in the fun way.

Today's genfic:

Last Rites (65k), also available at the House Fanfiction Archive. Big thanks to [info]iuliamentis and [info]brooklinegirl for betaing.

Set a couple months past the events of "Cursed": House has some bad news for Chase, and a surprise for Cameron.

And I don't know if I remembered to mention this before, but it's gen. I figure I've got about two months until this is jossed (shored?) into total oblivion, so read it while it's vaguely plausible!

Gen, het, drabble, novel, hell, I'll take anything if it is House and this well written. Slash would be nice but not neccessary. Even the lack of Wilson and Cuddy can't spoil this in any way.

Wonderful stuff, made me care about Cameron and Chase more than I thought possible. Since I suck at feedback I'll just quote yourself back at you.

This was what came of respecting people's wishes. He'd have liked to tell Wilson that, but he suspected Wilson would miss his point.
Yes, that's totally House.

Chase went and leaned by the exam table, automatically ceding the doctor's space to House
Perfect. An action so unconsious you arent' even aware of it.

Chase, break, room, House costing more ... so House, absolutely perfect voice here.

Cameron had mostly trained herself out of thinking He's out of his mind, not because it wasn't true, but because it wasn't helpful.
Made me laugh out loud.

And I bet they all have a little House voice in the back of their heads by now.

Neighbours, hee

Absolutely agree re Chase chosing the speciality furthest from his father's. I thought of it in terms of actual difference in way of practising but I like your idea - focuses things even more in terms of difference and works with the religious aspects too. Nice call, that is going to become part of my interpretation of Chase unless the show specifically contradicts it.

Back to House stories I am at least slightly insane to be so pleased by that.

I am working on some slash stories (and, as you can maybe tell because it's got its own page, I do expect to be writing more of something in this fandom) but I'm glad you liked this one!

And, of course, I had to fit in a Neighbours reference. ;)

Oh, this was utterly wonderful. You totally *nailed* it from start to finish. House's voice was perfect, and the rest is a beautiful study of both Cameron and Chase and their relationship.

Please tell your brain it can spit out as much gen fic as it likes. In the meantime, I'm going to go read this one again.

Just caught up with this now, it was really lovely. I've only seen three episodes of House and so there were a few pieces I had to work out, but I thought everyone seemed really in character, and I could see it all happening in my head. You've got Chase's voice down particularly well, and I loved Cameron bandaging his hands - and the scene on the plane ride home was very sweet.

Thank you! This story was written immediately after episode 13, "Cursed," and subsequent episodes have played merry hell with the characters and jossed this story fairly badly, but I'm glad you enjoyed it! Chase and Cameron's friendship was an aspect of the first half of the season that I really liked.

Thanks so much! This was written before either Chase or Cameron hit their late-season-one peaks of frustrating behavior, but I'm glad it worked for you! I'm so happy to see them both coming around (um, sort of) in season two.

As someone said above, re: Chase and Cameron's friendship ... just yes. I haven't yet seen more than a few shows of Season 2, so it's nice to hear that they (might?) be coming out of their character dips. OTOH, what I like about the show is that everyone is rather screwed up (with the possible exception of Foreman, who's just an arrogant SOB (g)). I like them for that, but by the end of season one, Chase was really getting on my nerves. They seemed to have removed his redeeming characteristics, so it was nice to read this.

(This was recced, btw, on [info]the_rec_room, just so you know how I found it.)

Thanks for commenting (and for the pointer)! I'm glad you liked this one--and yes, I find that as season two goes on, I'm able to regain my Chase love more and more, and even Cameron isn't quite so... Cameron. :)

I actually don't mind Cameron, or rather, I get where she's coming from (I'm also a professional female in a largely male-dominated field, and also prefer to 'make nice' rather than stir up trouble). :-)

In any case, do you know any other stories featuring Chase (and/or Cameron and/or Foreman and/or House)? I prefer gen, but don't mind some romance. For some reason, I don't find myself very interested in slash for this show, even the House/Wilson stuff, although I have no issues with slash in general, and have written it in other fandoms. Go figure.

Actually, though I love the show passionately, I haven't read much fic myself (not even House/Wilson, though they're my OTP for the fandom), and very little that I've seen has been Chase-centric. Sorry I can't be more help!

i got linked to this from some lj community and read this just yesterday, and i have to say that the coincidence between this story and the entire thing about last rites in tonight's episode with the dead baby is uncanny. it's really cool how your fic somehow incorporated future canon.

Thanks so much for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the story!

I was indeed flailing all over the place with love for Chase when he prayed over the baby - but in my (possibly slightly biased) mind it wasn't surprising at all, except in the YAY CONTINUITY! sense, since we already knew last season that he was Catholic and an ex-seminary student, and his religious issues had just been stirred up a few episodes back with the faith healer.

I really liked this. Especially the little moments in it - that Chase's mum drank Bombay Sapphire Gin and his grandma and Cameron ordering whiskey sours.

That moment right at the end, with chase throwing the bottles was just. Guh. I really liked it.

[info]indiana_j recced it yesterday so people are definately still reading it. :) We've only just gotten the end of season two last week in Australia (I'm told there's a third season?) and it's taken them so long to show it all that I've really forgotten most of what happened, so as far as I'm concerned it hasn't been eclipsed by anything.

Yes, we're four episodes into the third season here, though it's now on a bit of a hiatus as the network is airing baseball championships. Thanks for the pointer--I'm delighted to see it recced and of course very happy it's still being read! (And, being from the US, especially glad to hear from Australians on this particular story. *g*) Thank you!
