Terry Gilliam movies!
So it seems there is not one but two new Terry Gilliam films coming out. Both of which I had no idea about until I started seeing commercials for The Brothers Grimm, which I'm sure at least some of you have seen if you watch any TV at all. The other film is called Tideland, which is finished but as of yet has no release date.

This is odd that I didn't know about this because, you see, I was formerly very obsessed with Terry Gilliam. The first time I saw Brazil, I knew I wanted to make films. Every movie of his that I subsequently hunted down just cemented the idea into my head.

As I get older though (and after I saw his horrible "ultimate directors cut" of Brazil) I grow somewhat tired of his excess. He really has no discipline, either in production or especially in the editing room. The latter of which is what pains me most about his films now, being the self proclaimed "miz-aster edit-izaster" that I am. Somewhere along the line I became obsessed with efficiency in film making, and Mr. Gilliam just kept on doing his thing, totally obsessed with inefficiency.

That said, I can't say I am not totally fucking excited at the prospect of two new Gilliam films. Yessss!

Brothers Grimm caught me off guard, too... especially being a fan of both.

...but I'm excited all the same ;)

Indeed, I think I very well may have to break my "never go on opening day" rule for this one.

Brazil is just about my favorite movie. I appreciate efficient editing, but I also like that it's possible for a film like Brazil to exist. Gilliam makes projects so big that they completely fall apart and don't get made somewhat often, and that makes it even more special when one actually makes it through production. It's exciting.

Too many chase scenes, though.

I can see your point there. It is pretty amazing that Brazil even exists. Don't get me wrong, it was easily my top all time favorite movie of all time for a good long while, until Eternal Sunshine took it's place. But I still do love it so very tenderly. One of the five different cuts of it at least.
