11:59 pm - Forwarded Entry
This journal is mostly friends only.

This post is so people can leave info for me, ask questions and get in touch rather than commenting on other unrelated posts.

"You're so wonderful Alexander!", "It's your child Alexander!", "The police are coming! Get out of the house Alexander!" etc

9:30 am - Ugh.
The overland trains are out, the DLR is out, and there's a mile long queue for the buses.

What are the chances?

Urgh.

I have lurgy. I suspect it's mostly to do with the pollen count being through the roof.

2:58 pm - How I didn't spend Saturday
So Bob Crow was right, Boris Johnson brought in a ban that proved to be absolutely spot on because a 1000 inebriated protesters decided to cause drunken chaos on the underground in the name of "civil liberties" and "free rights".

Pretty much how I expected it to go - Gandhi is spinning in his grave, civil rights protesters and activists of London have come out looking like scum, Bob Crow and Boris Johnson have come out looking awesome, hell has generally frozen over.

Good job gang. Something to be proud of!

My Mum: "Seeing as you couldn't find a date for the ball you'll be looking after Michael Buerk. Your brother is equally useless so he's getting Annie Lennox. I don't know, between the pair of you, you couldn't find a single girl to go out with? You're both rubbish."

I should not invite anyone more often.

Epic Nose Man faces court for calling Scientology "a cult"

What was amusing was the BBC saying he was unavailable for comment due to doing his GCSEs.

Even more amusing is the Anonymous group trying to find links between the City of London Police and the Church of Scientology.

8:29 pm - iPod Touch
I think it's finally time to retire my classic Rio Karma now that the iPod Touch has been out with a 32Gb version for a while now and I was quite impressed after playing with [info]flavius_m's for hours on end over WGW.

I've never had an iPod before, anything I should know? Worthwhile accessories?

Suggestions for an engraving?

Alternatives?

1:18 am - Whitby (Epilogue)
Oddly enough the best music I heard all Whitby was from History Of Guns (who didn't actually play). [info]maxrael gave me a sampler of the new album Acedia and they seem to have hit my musical tastes on the head again - it has elements of goth, punk, industrial and metal, and it's not done in a cheesy or bad way either. So I figured it was about time I went and bought their entire back catalogue. Something I haven't done since I first heard Attrition many years ago.

In other news I missed Maffball (an "extreme sport" which I believe first made it's appearance last WGW and you can be sure it's only a matter of time before the police turn up at a future WGW beach party) but [info]dan_lane recorded it. I'm kind of glad I'm at a safe distance. Go watch the videos, all the kids will be doing it in a park near you soon.

4:32 pm - Lazyweb Diagnostics
My computer died about a week ago and I'm trying to fix it.

Essentially the motherboard was registering power (because the led lit up) but it wouldn't power up as such.

I made the assumption that it must have been something wrong with the motherboard so got a replacement, stripped the old motherboard down. Same result, motherboard lights up, won't start though - the diagnostic on the new motherboard displays CPU INIT.

So I assumed it must have been the processor and bought a replacement CPU and the CPU still gets stuck on CPU INIT.

No combination of motherboards or processors results in the damn thing powering up.

I am at a loss. The only thing I can think of is that it's actually the power cable going to the CPU power point. This seems a little bit of a long shot given that there's power to the motherboard in general.

Any other suggestions before I go out and buy a new PSU?

More questions from me!

Essentially I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a decent 24 port Layer 2 Gigabit Switch. D-Link? Netgear? Cisco? Whatever.

Don't really think I can justify a Layer 3 switch at this point.

What's good value for money these days?

2:26 pm - LazyWebHosting
Dear LazyWeb,

1 x Domain Name (i.e. www.domain.co.uk)
3 x Web Servers (i.e. www1.domain.co.uk [100.100.100.1] / www2.domain.co.uk [100.100.100.2] / www3.domain.co.uk [100.100.100.3] )

What's the best way to load balance web sites these days? So that anyone looking at www.domain.co.uk gets a round robin or whatever to one of the physical web servers...? Does it require a network config or can it all be done via DNS?
