Dude.

Man, I'm bored. What should we do today?

Oh, I've got an awesome idea!

Bowfire!

I saw this last night. Its central conceit? The novel idea of having ten violinists all playing at once.

Iron Man

Iron Man is superb. Go see it.

You might want to stay through the credits, too, if you want to see a brief cameo.

Two things though:

1) The lead designer of a company which develops supercomputers and advanced weaponry would not use a Dell monitor.

2) If you watch closely, whenever Tony Stark is on the phone his phone/computer transcribes the conversation. You'll probably notice that the computer is transcribing ahead of what Tony Stark is saying. Advanced predictive AI?

And what's up with not casting Eric Bana for the new Hulk movie? Bet it had something to do with Ed Norton writing the screenplay...

Attack ads

The Republican Party in North Carolina has created Obama attack ads which feature (you guessed it) Rev. Wright, saying "God Bless America? No, God *beep* America."

They're using him not only to discredit Obama, but also the two Democratic nominees for governor, who support Obama.

You can see the ad here. As if Purdue and Moore's vitriolic attack ads weren't bad enough.

Words of Power

You know, I went for well over 15 years without thinking of, mentioning in conversation, remembering, or otherwise acknowledging the existence of the Goonies.

Then, a few days ago I found myself discussing it, since Sean Astin was on Law & Order (a rerun) and was also here in North Carolina campaigning for Hillary (at the same time, TNT was running a Lord of the Rings Marathon).

Then, lo and behold, what's on TV today but the Goonies. Granted, it's probably on a lot during off hours, but I'd never seen it. Could it be coincidence, or is Ted Turner trolling through my IMDB hits looking for program ideas?

Now if only I could use this power for good instead of boring.

Looking Through the Glass

This is a piece I wrote for a choreographer friend. It was intended to match with the Philip Glass works on the program.

Enjoy.

Class news

I just received the class news in the mail. Williams has such extensive class news that they decided to separate it from the typical alumni magazine, so it's a freestanding publication on its own.

But I never noticed how the book begins - I usually just glanced at the earliest class year out of curiousity and skipped to the end of the book (classes are listed chronologically, starting with the class of 1932, though alumni from as early as 1929 are apparently still around). Each of these early classes have pretty much the same news:

"The good news is that seven of us are still up and running. Keep running!"

"my first job is to apologize to Herb Gutterson. He noticed his name was missing from my last list of those who are still with us..."

"Sadly, my notes this issue all concern obituaries."
I mean, yeah, that's what you expect to see from class notes at age 98... but it is a bit morbid.

work work work

I've been buried under work for the past two weeks or so. A collaboration project with a choreographer was performed this week, involving lots of last minute alterations and long tech rehearsals, though it was a great success (in my humble opinion). And I played the Nielsen Concerto today in Rep class, which is a milestone in any clarinetist's career.

I'll have some sound samples, etc. up here at some point.

In other news, isn't there something particularly Orwellian about this picture?
NY Times. Something about the size proportions I find very disturbing...

CNN showing some Facebook <3.

This quote really solidifies it:
Chris Neal, 20, a sophomore at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, said listing relationships online solidifies the commitment.

When it's listed on Facebook "it's public knowledge," he said. "Guys won't try to come get with a girl in a relationship and girls won't come to get with a guy. It's like marking your territory."
Like marking your territory, folks.

Obama

I had a rather surreal experience of listening to NPR cover political news while I drove past the Coliseum today where Obama was, at that very moment, giving a speech. I couldn't get tickets because, well, I didn't even know that he was coming.

It's funny, with all this media coverage, you start to forget that this is an actual person we're talking about.

Gas

I can accurately forecast the future of oil prices. It goes something like this:

My gas tank is full => oil prices suddenly go down.
My gas tank is empty => oil prices suddenly go up.

You could make a fortune day trading in oil with this information.

Movies

More brief movie reviews:

The Bank Job is a nice little caper, a little darker than you might expect. It also manages to capture the late 70s with surprising authenticity.

I actually caught Casanova on TV the other day. When it came out, I assumed it was a ridiculous-anachronistic-boneheaded-romantic comedy (a vastly overrepresented genre), but actually the movie is quite good. It's a farce in the grand tradition of Italian opera, sans the singing. It's unfortunate that Heath Ledger took such an early exit - his career was just getting started. Who knows how Terry Gilliam's latest would have turned out? (though the rewrite might in fact turn out better than the original)

I'm now halfway through my fourth semester, which means I've earned my DN degree. Almost made it...

Obama supporters

A reporter tries to railroad an Obama supporter in this interesting video.

You think you know how it's going to go, but you're wrong.

This kind of thing gives me hope for the universe, only offset by Facebook group comment areas.
