Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia / Mesaplex
I was just upset to learn that the fantastic Meanwhile, Back In Communist Russia had decided to call it a day, before I ever got to see them live. However, my upset has been mollified slightly by the fact that half of the original band have teamed up with an old friend to form Mesaplex. Judging by the three demo tracks available from their site, Mesaplex retain the complex, haunting, sweeping rhythms of MBICR, mixing classical structures with tribal beats and electronica. I'm not entirely convinced by the male vocals, but I'm certainly impressed enough to wait to see what a full album, and hence more polished production, will do for them.
They're gigging next Friday at the Wheatsheaf. Anybody interested? (for the London-dwellers, they're also playing the Notting Hill Arts Café next Saturday)
