10:43 am - two great pleasures
|
there are two great pleasures in life*. one is driving on a beautiful day with your windows down listening to music. the other is sitting back on a comfortable couch and putting your feet up.
unfortunately, i have only experienced one of those lately due to STILL NOT HAVING ANY GODDAMN FURNITURE. all i want is a couch/loveseat that are comfy and nice to look at. why is that so much to ask??
*not the only two great pleasures in life, but the only two i am talking about right now.

1:32 am - i broke my finger.
|
my left middle finger, to be precise.
i was wheeling a bunch of bags of clothes (heavy) on top of my shoe rack on top of a dolly (wheeled platform thing). the tips of my left and right middle fingers were curled around the edges of the rack to push the whole contraption.
you can see where this is going.
the rack collapsed on my fingers, bruising the right one and trapping the left one for what was likely only 2 seconds of the worst pain i have ever felt in my life. then i pulled it free.
don't know whether it was the impact or the pulling free, but my nail broke clean in half across the finger and i started bleeding copiously. i dripped bright red blood on the garage floor for a bit before going inside to wash off and wait for my dad to take me to the emergency room.
x-rays were positive, showing a fracture of the tip of my finger. they numbed the finger and pulled off the broken-off part of my nail. they also put in three stitches to close up the cut in my nail bed and i think one or two on the side of my finger/cuticle where some skin had been ripped back. i could not bring myself to watch most of this.
side note: getting the shots to numb my finger was the second most painful thing that happened to me today.
i get to take antibiotics and ultram (non-narcotic) rather than percocet because when i took oxywhatever it made me nauseous.
wear the dressing on my finger for 24-48 hrs then just a band aid. try to keep it clean dry and elevated. RICE. Rest Ice Compression Elevation. follow-up with hand guy in three days to check the fracture, and then again to get the stitches taken out in 7-10 days. wear splint for ~4 weeks. (one positive: now it will be extra emphatic when i flip people off.)
~5 hours later, i left the hospital. i feel dumb.

9:47 am - i confess...
|
i want to confess this in a somewhat public forum so that you all can laugh at me if you want. i have been harboring this secret for well over a year now.
i have a mug at work that i use every day for water. it's very cute; it has little piggies on it that are all white except for one black pig. cute piggies.
i leave this mug at my desk every day so that no one takes it from me in the morning before i get in the next day. i wash out the mug each morning even if there is still water in it from the day before. why? because i worry about germs/dust? no.
because i am worried that someone could have slipped poison into it overnight.

12:01 am - baby got back
|
|
.... into Maryland, that is. I'm back. Yay! I had a great time, loved hanging out with Sarah and the various other people I saw (kagepony, kilroi, amittai, feralchimp, eggfoam, asarwate, iridium.... my goodness!) and Xanax helped me sleep most of the way back. Now, of course, my body again has no idea what time it is, but hey. Small price to pay.

5:44 pm - omgwtfjeans
|
i found three pairs jeans! well, two really but i bought a second pair of one of them, cause of all the hassle i've gone through. there was a sale at lucky jeans, half off. which brought them into the reasonable price range, and in fact, most likely less than i would pay at the gap or express.
success!!
tomorrow is my last full day in CA, there's perhaps a farmers market, perhaps the deyoung, lunch, then hopefully head on over to oakland, where i'm staying my last night in the city before leaving at 10:52 monday morning.

8:23 am - good jeans
|
Seriously, where do I find jeans? I am unwilling to pay the prices for the high end brands like 7 for all mankind or true religion, and even if I were willing, I doubt they make jeans that would fit my body type anyway. I am basically of the opinion that $50-$60 is on the high end of what I'm willing to pay, though I can resign myself to it if I really like the jeans. The problem is, I have these things, they're called hips. My shape goes in at the waist, out at the hips, and then in below them. However, all the "curvy" shaped jeans that I can find (that are marketed as such, anyway), seem to have a huge waist, which seems odd to me. By "curvy" I don't think they should mean "huge waist", but I guess they do, because the jeans I've tried on have fit fine in the hips and below, but the waistband is way too big.
So, where do I find jeans? I tried express, no luck (though I am in LA, perhaps back east there are more choices than Stella and Eva and one other one I can't recall). Gap, also no luck, particularly with their "curvy" fit. Banana Republic, poor jeans selection. I've been recommended Old Navy and the Levi's store, but haven't tried them yet.
Any other suggestions? Help!
EDIT: Went shopping along the 3rd street promendade this morning. No luck! Found one pair of Old Navy jeans that fit alright (not great) but I didn't like something about the way the wash looked... So, no luck at:
Gap Express Banana Republic Old Navy J Crew Lucky Brand Levis Guess French Connection UK Diesel American Eagle
What's next??? Is there another store??

Santa Monica, to be precise. Apparently I left just in time, as now it's mid-high 90's and humid in DC. Anyone in LA?

11:54 pm - Sulu!!
|
Tonight I volunteered at the Equality Maryland Night Out, which is their annual gala at which they fundraise and present awards. It was held at the hotel one block from where I live. I decided not to pay $125 a ticket, but I did volunteer to help out. One of the awards was being given to George Takei, also known as Mr. Sulu of Star Trek fame. He talked for a while, and then I got his autograph! Also, it seems that when I am excited about something, I am reasonably photogenic. To wit:

I am quite happy. :)

5:13 pm - Remember what the dormouse said
|
|
What is the correct latin translation of "Remember what the dormouse said"? I've come to the frightening realization that even with the help of Google, I've forgotten most of my 7 years of Latin, and the best I can come up with is "Memento quod dixerit mus ianuae". Should it be dixit, or is the subjunctive dixerit correct? Am I totally off base? Please help!

10:18 pm - Yeah so I haven't posted in a long time.
|
I've lurked, I admit it.
I am only breaking radio silence to say I just read a super cool article in which was quoted one of the panelists that served on the NDSEG evaluation panel this past Saturday. I administer NDSEG. I find it amusing that I was reading this article and was like "Hey, Gerald Fraser from NIST!"
Here's the article. It's super cool and makes me think about going back into science. Black is getting blacker.

9:12 pm - On Faith
|
There is this section in the Washington Post called On Faith. They have people write short pieces, and then lots and lots of comments from readers follow.
In this particular "On Faith", Richard Dawkins wrote a piece about how religious beliefs can give a rationale for deeds that can be called evil.
Lots of comments on the post, but my favorite is this one, where the second sentence made me crack up:
FATHER O'MARLOWE: Dawkins doesn't understand. He's too busy thinking.
As Canyon Shearer [a previous religious poster] demonstrates, thinking is an impediment to belief in our Lord.
Reason is the enemy. Faith must be blind to it or suffer the consequences of godlessness.
Good Christians know how to connect with Him. The road to our Lord is through the heart. The brain is the great misleader. Bliss come when we learn to turn it off, and open up our hearts to God.
Sincerely,F.O.
I am not bashing my friends who are religious (because I know they would never say that reason is the enemy). But man, how can you say it better than "thinking is an impediment to belief in our Lord"?
