On politics and discussions thereof
With the impending presidential election, I feel compelled to give this little bit of background of myself before ranting a bit.

Back in the early 1990s, I was stridently Republican - and after about a year of arguing points with those otherwise opposed to such principles, I concluded that the only thing it did for me was make me stressed out and emotionally exhausted, and the other person invariably didn't change their mind - contributing to the former problem. I think it was a moment that somebody I knew declared that you couldn't possibly be Christian if you didn't vote for a certain candidate that finally did me in insofar as that goes.

So as such, I don't talk about politics a whole lot. Ditto with religion. I'd go so far as to say that, at times, such discussion kind of annoys me.

In context with the impending election in November, there's the usual mudslinging, naturally. Barack Obama is a former Moslem where McCain went to war; McCain is just another Dubya and an old fart, where Obama is a different candidate and is young blood for the White House. People, let's face it - for our major candidates, we're dealing with two people who have their principles, their idiosyncrasies, and whatever baggage, imperfections, and whatever else comes with them. Include the minor party candidates, and it's just more of the same.

And note I said people. They, too, are human, and they make mistakes. As a result of them running for office, their dirty laundry is going to come up. They're going to shine light on their own bright points, and their campaign will shine lights on the not-so-bright. Fine. If you were running for office on one of the major political party tickets, you could - and, in fact, should - expect the same treatment. Somebody will go through and, if you're one of those people who can't keep their bank balance from going below zero by the end of the month, they'll point out how you can't balance your checkbook - how the hell do you think you can run a country if you can't even balance your own checkbook? Point being here is that I think it's a bit hypocritical of us to point out the faults of our presidential candidates, as if they were expected to be saints, when we as the common collective rabble make the same mistakes they do on a daily basis.

Now look at the grand scheme - THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA HAS NO REAL POWER. To misquote one of Mel Brooks' characters in Spaceballs, "I'm the president! I can't make decisions!" The president doesn't make laws, he merely signs them after they've gone through the sewage pipes known as congress. He doesn't write his own speeches - he has people do that for him. He doesn't make decisions on military tactic, national security, economy, agriculture - that's what the appointed cabinet is for. He can't even declare war - only congress can. The president's staff and congress have all of the power - the president just takes the crap when it hits the fan. It's why we elect representatives based on whatever hollow promises they make, and then we hope that, when it comes down to cabinet appointments, that the president does not grant favors to good friends that know jack about the subject matter at hand.

As for any religious issues about the candidates, past or present, I have two words: "SCREW THAT". There is a clause in the first amendment of the US constitution that effectively guarantees full freedom to follow whatever religion you want, in that "Congress shall make no law" with respect to any particular religion - which pretty much means that you can worship whomever or whatever you want, and there is almost nothing they can do about it. The same clause that allows people to worship Jesus Christ also allowed the late George Carlin to pay similar respect to Joe Pesci and the sun, and likewise allows those who so choose to not believe in any supernatural deity at all. Obama may be at a disadvantage owing to his Moslem heritage and the modern day connotations revolving around that, but I don't see him letting that get in his way. Sure, some of our founders were Christian - but that doesn't make the United States a Christian nation, it just means that some of our founders were Christian. I have doubts that such freedoms would exist if this were a theocracy, which I declare would be the case if this were truly a Christian nation.

In the end, it's up to you, the reader, who to vote for come November. I'm not going to tell you who to vote for, or why you should vote for a given candidate. That's your decision - and it's part of what makes this country function. Even if that function is rather haphazard at times.

A regretful bit of disappointment. But, in the immortal words of Linus Van Pelt, "Just wait until next year!"

This is copied and pasted from an email I received from the renfaire staff out here.

Dearest Friends, Family and Supporters,

It is with our deepest regret that we must announce that the
Washington Renaissance Fantasy Faire, planned to be held August 2, 3, 9,
10, 16, 17, 2008, in Belfair Washington has been cancelled.

Due to challenges with the permitting process and after a
meeting with the Department of Natural Resources yesterday and a meeting
this morning with the Mason County Commissioners, we have not and will
not be granted our permits to run the Faire this season. We have done
everything that we could have done and have exhausted all avenues to
make this event happen on the new site this year.

We offer our deepest and sincerest apologies to all that
this cancellation will affect. We understand that plans have been made,
tickets have been bought and travel plans have been arranged in order to
attend the Washington Renaissance Faire.

It is our sincerest hope to work with the Mason County
Commissioners, the Department of Natural Resources and the Planning
Commission for Mason County to resolve these challenges satisfactorily
in order to re-open the Washington Renaissance Faire in August of 2009
on our new site in Belfair, Washington.

Thank you all for the support and love that you have offered
us over the past 11 years and know that you have our deepest gratitude
for your support both now through these trying times and in the future
as we grow and prosper.

Sincerely,

Ron and Teresa Cleveland and all the

Washington Renaissance Faire Staff

It was a day. In the sun.
Yes, I spent the day outside for the most part. Well, except for a few hours interspersed throughout the day, combined.

After my class, [info]ksharra, Derrek, and I got together. After a quick trip to Noah's (as they hadn't had breakfast), we went and saw Get Smart. For this part, we stayed out of the sun - after all, it would be rather silly to see this film from a front projection screen in broad daylight.

A little note here - SEE THIS FILM. DO IT. NOW. Unless you have to do it tomorrow. Just see this film. Steve Carrell makes a damn good Maxwell Smart with some more emotion, and Anne Hathaway plays a fantastic Agent 99 - and even puts into her a tough-as-nails streak.

Shortly afterwards, after pausing to smoke, we made our way to Juanita Beach, and I got to actually swim for the first time in a couple of years in a decent lake. Waterfights ensued. Later, sunbathing ensued, amidst various and sundry references to Monty Python, Pinky & The Brain, and such like that.

After a while, we became hungry - after all, one does not live on bagels alone. Near Juanita Beach there's this place called Spud Fish & Chips - which, naturally, sells fish and chips. On finishing food, she mentions an ongoing desire to modify some trip pants with some black-light reactive fabric paint. I note there's a Michael's nearby, within walking distance - so off we go. We get there, buy a few things - I myself bought some matting for some of the artwork I've acquired (which I now learn requires frames....), a small cobalt glass bottle, and some sourballs, she buys fabric paint and a handful of other things. Hilarity and the two of them flirting ensued.

(Hey, they make a great couple.)

So we return to the beach park, and get a few photos as we walk through the grassy area near the street. We noticed a not running fountain surrounding some green, and Derrek suggested we get people out to just clear it out - it simply doesn't look right when it's not running. Meanwhile, I got a few shots off - some of the greenery, a nice shot of a rose (and one with the two of them kissing in the background), and even a couple of the three of us.

Afterwards, we parted ways. They took off for Uwajimaya and elsewhere, I came home with things to do.

Tomorrow offers other things - in preparation for the upcoming rennaisance faire (in hopes that it does, indeed, run - see a post on [info]renfaires today about that), I'm going to Everett tomorrow afternoon to get together with Tony and Crystal, to get the final bits for faire garb put together. More fabric is needed, and I need to get some patterns for this.

Chicken
Currently on Whidbey - we're exercising an annual tradition of beer can chicken on or around 4th of July, which Rick and I have been doing since 2003.

(Well, I lied. We skipped 2005, due to proximity - they had moved up here that year, and I was still in Orange County.)

This year I'm doing the ginger chicken, which I did with two other types of birds two years ago (and for the life of me, I don't remember which recipes I followed two years ago, aside from that one). Rick's doing something with lemon grass, which I'm looking forward to.

Last night, we had <ljl user=graycoyote>, Rainfox, and one or two others take off for the mainland; I think that sometime today, others will be showing up. As for me, I'm going to try to get back to the mainland tonight or early tomorrow, depending on things.

For those curious, this is something of a followup to my post from a couple of days ago.

The short version of this is that I'm feeling better.

In the weeks leading up to Derrek's arrival, she and I have spoken of his arrival and my worries. It's been interesting and difficult, but it's something that I've found was an unfounded fear.

Well, maybe not entirely unfounded.

But nevertheless, I see someone who also places a high value on friends, and isn't going to let a romantic relationship get in the way of this. In Derrek, I see someone who matches this as well - and I look forward to getting to know him better.

More than this, I'm looking forward to getting to know them, as a unit.

Thoughts on friendship and insecurity
I'm at a weird point tonight. I have several posts on my fingertips wanting to get out, some of which have even been saved.

But this... this is something I need to get out into the open. If I'm ever going to get over issues I have with insecurity in friendship...well, this just seems like a good place to start.

To give you some back story, [info]ksharra and I, over the past months, have become close friends. I don't know how this happened. What I do know is that, of this woman who I have been talking to off and on since August and, since February, working with and playing pool with, for the first time in my life, I have a close platonic female friend. She's almost like the sister I never had.

And in this comes the insecurity.

See, overall, I place a high value on my friends - I guess it comes from not really having really had many friends while growing up. So it's a shame, to say the least, when I see friends disappear.

One thing I've seen happen muchly is friends disappearing into romantic relationships. They get attached/hitched/married/whatever, and then I don't see them again after that - except maybe at the supermarket.

She has a boyfriend now, and he just arrived on Greyhound. A guy named Derrek, someone she's known since she was a child. He lived up here for a few months six years ago, had to move back to Mississippi, and life pinned him down for a while. Now he's back. Met him, and in fact spent Sunday retrieving and entertaining him while K'sharra was at work.

(And yes, this was during Pride Parade, a marathon that went across the 520 drawspan, and some sort of kids event. Amazingly, the traffic wasn't that bad.)

This I guess is where the insecurity comes in. See, intellectually, I know this isn't the case - she and I have spoken about this - but there's a small part of me that's afraid of losing this newfound friend. Something in that subconscious of mine is trying to tell me that we're gonna drift apart - and yet I see me, determined to not let this happen, and she seems likewise determined - or perhaps more correctly, she doesn't strike me as the sort of person who is going to say something like, "OMG BOYFRIEND! OK, big kitty, I love you, byebye!".

I guess there's only one way I could deal with this.

Well, OK, I suppose I could be a stalker to her, but that's not only unethical, immoral, illegal (harrassment), and creepy as hell, that's one thing that's sure to drive her away as a friend and probably land me with some legal problems - not to mention a good clobbering from Derrek. Clearly, the wrong approach.

The other way, however, is what I'm going to do - live life as usual. Be me, have fun, stomp around Seattle with a camera, drink here, smoke there, do my thing, and when we get together, drink and smoke with her, play pool with her, and just be friends.

I couldn't ask for anything more than that.

Well, OK, winning lottery numbers. But that's another story.

This is a news shot from Pittsburgh station KDKA, and the press is actually positive - the reporter seemed to be actually enjoying herself. Naturally, the "rumors of sex" thing came up, but she and Uncle Kage actually downplayed it quite well, I think.

George Carlin is dead.

Enjoying his work, there is just no other way to put it - I don't think he would have appreciated it if I said he "passed on", though I think he would have smiled a bit if John Cleese gave him the Parrot Sketch send-off, as what Mr. Cleese did when fellow Pythoner Graham Chapman died about 20 years ago.

So in tribute, out of courtesy for those so sensitive, I shall now put behind a cut my own tribute to Mr. Carlin.

Foul language under cut )

Writer's Block: How I got on LJ
Ganked from fellow road geek [info]cahwyguy

Who introduced you to LiveJournal? Why did you first open an account or get involved?

View other answers

I got on back in early 2003, back when LJ was still doing the invite codes. Can't remember who did the invite - was another furry.

Anyway, I got the account because, well, everyone else was talking about this Livejournal thing and I saw it as another way to stay involved with the fandom. It kind of went downhill from there. =^_^=

As for the unasked question - "why do you hang around?" - there are several answers that boil down to one thing: I really don't give a flying #$@%! about the drama, the politicking, the policies, or the foul rumors about Livejournal. It is, to me, a place to dump thoughts onto, talk about what's going on with my life, and a networking facility. It provides entertainment - and granted, it's in the form of communities such as [info]mock_the_stupid, which occasionally satiates my desire for schadenfreude. It's a way to share in the joy and sorrows of my friends, physically distant though some of them be.

It's kept me about as weird as I am.

(I refuse to say "eccentric". I have insufficient money to go by that term, unless I win the lottery or something.)

Yet another reason why I have no intention of having children
Canadian child goes to court over being grounded )

One reason that my marriage to Karmin yielded no offspring is because she was, frankly, incapable of reproducing. Which is fine - to be honest, I really want no children. My cats are enough, TYVM.

Don't get me wrong, I don't mind kids. To a small extent, they remind me of my cats. The knowledge that they generally grow up into responsible adults keeps me insane. But then you get things like this. This girl behaved irresponsibly, and then in response to the punishment, behaved frivolously. Here's someone who is just asking for trouble.

Granted, the kid is from a broken home, and I have no way to gauge the circumstances around it.

Ah, well.

Memeage!
Ganked this one from [info]ksharra.

You know how sometimes people on your Friends list post about stuff going on in their life, and all of a sudden you think "Wait a minute? Since when are they working THERE? Since when are they dating HIM/HER? since when???" And then you wonder how you could have missed all that seemingly pretty standard information, but somehow you feel too ashamed to ask for clarification because it seems like info you *should* already know? It happens to all of us sometimes.

1.First Name:
Dennis

2. Age:
33

3. Location:
Kirkland, WA

4. Occupation:
Tier 3 Tech Support for cell phones

5. Partner:
Well, nobody - divorcing (note the gerund here), but open to someone new and wanting to take it slow this time.

6. Kids:
Um... no.

7. Brothers/Sisters:
Jason (32)
Kevin (29)
Peter (20?)

8. Pets:
Two cats, Lina and Zelgadis

9. List the 3-5 biggest things going on in your life:

* My first (and, hopefully, last) divorce.

* Rebuilding and remodeling my life, as it were - up here I've been able to start to rebuild my credit and finances (a long process any way you look at it), finding new friends and trying to reconnect with old friends, finding myself, and just enjoying being by myself and otherwise unattached again.

* Getting out of the con staffing circuit and generally retiring from it. I'm tired. I've become weary of being "voluntold", and I think ten years of con staffing is enough - I'd rather go to a con armed with a digital camera and just have fun shooting it up. =^_^=

* A developed habit of making my own mead. This will hopefully become an ongoing thing. Soon to expand to other fermentables, such as beer and perhaps some blackberry wine. =^_^=

10. Where and for what did you go to school for?:

Fullerton College. Major undeclared (though originally for computer science, but...), and only got two semesters of ballet, a semester of Japanese 101, and a course called "Computer Information Systems 111" which I dropped. It was hard to justify taking a course whose curriculum started with the display of a particular computer peripheral, and the declaration that "this is a mouse".

11. Parents?:

Allen and Vickie. And then Allen and Diana, and (way more more recently) Hiram and Vickie.

12. Who are some of your closest friends?:
K'sharra, Dave, Aloha, Steel, Gray Coyote

You are in a mall when the zombies attack. You have:
1. one weapon.

2. one song blasting on the speakers.

3. one famous person to fight alongside you.

For me, it would have to be...

1) Baseball bat

2) "Beat On The Brat" by The Ramones

3) Shaun, with his cricket bat. See, he got out of there alive.

(EDIT - corrected song title. Thanks, [info]maikujaku and [info]ottermama, for the correction.)

Memorial Day
This weekend, for those not keeping up, was Memorial Day - a weekend where we remember those who went to war for truth, justice, and the American Way (and didn't come back) by getting together with friends and/or family, eating food, and buying stuff.

Regretfully, I had no money. So no buying stuff. As for family, most of my family is in the greater Los Angeles area. But, I did have food, and got together with friends.

Saturday involved some household chores - laundry, cleaning stuff like that. That evening, went to Everett in preparation for Sunday.

On Sunday, I went with Tony and Crystal to a spot about half way between Belfair and Dewatto over on the peninsula, where the local rennaisance faire is to be held. Barbecue, prepping the newly purchased site, and a logistics meeting ensued. It was my first foray to the other side of the sound - and I regret not bringing my camera, but I did squeeze off a few shots on my phone, which doesn't have the best camera, but it does the job.

Monday involved not working - I had taken the day off as vacation time. I spent much of the day with [info]ksharra - after starting a buffalo roast and doing a small amount of shopping, we caught a bus into Seattle and went to Pike Place Market, which despite having been in the area plenty of times and having been up here in the Seattle area for over two years, I've not spent much time at. I suppose it was because I never really had anyone to go through the market with - but holy jeez, what a find. =^_^= Food vendors to die for (aside from just the fish market), three honey vendors, more food, more stuff, more food, and more stuff. It is a place to stomp around and find new things every time you go - and methinks we shall have to go there more often.

(To explain, K'sharra does indeed have a vehicle - but I have a strong belief in not allowing friends to drive into downtown Seattle. Fortunately, we have a killer transit system.)

Afterwards involved a movie (Merchant of Venice), said roast, and then migrating out to [info]jurann's for a bit. I didn't get home until around midnight.

Overall, a wonderful day.

Observations about the economy
Seems then that the state has recently started to take some advertisement revenue, or at least that I've noticed. At least here on the Kittitas, the advertiser is Lufthansa Airlines. Which all things considered seems reasonable, really. Transit does it, you see billboards all overr busses, bus stops, et cetera, so why not a frequently used means of gettting people across the channel? Brings money in, so they can at least put fuel into the boats.

Yesterday at 11:30 PM PDT marks the second anniversary of my arrival at King Street Station in Seattle, in an attempt to make for a better life than I could have hoped for while living in Orange County. I can't say that I expected some of what happened in those two years to actually happen, but since then I can certainly say that life has actually picked up.

(What can I say? We were lucky. While that particular train - named the Coast Starlight - is normally scheduled to arrive at 8:30 PM, we arrived at 11:30 PM. That may not sound so great, all things considered, but consider that this particular train normally gets in at around 2:30 AM. There's a reason they call it the "Coast Starlate" sometimes.)

OK, so there's this new thing in spam that's apparently for sale - lists of contact information for doctors.

Why? I mean, my insurance provides me with a list of doctors available for Group Health, and every insurance provider does. I'm not going to sell something to a doctor. If I really need to find a doctor someplace, that's what Google is for. So why in the hell do I need this?

Rephrase - why does a spammer think anyone needs this for?

It seems I have an anonymous stalker, or something.

See, it's funny. This screwball, whoever they are, decided to flame me for being a furry fan over on [info]debian. OK, no big deal, comes with the territory. I can dig it. Delete the comments, get on with life.

Then this yutz tells me not to delete comments. Apparently, as a furry, I don't have the right. Well, according to the privileges set on the post, it seems that I am allowed to delete comments. So I delete it, and screen anonymous.

Then he tells me not to screen anonymous posts in the previous post I made. This brainiac went and spent time searching the [info]debian archive so that he could flame me unfettered. So, naturally, being as obedient as I am, I do it.

And ya know what? I think it's hilarious. I think it's funny this screwball, whoever they are, took time out of their day so they could tell me how much they love me. I'm truly flattered, just little ol' me here in the Seattle area someplace, and somebody is going to take time out of their busy day to tell me I'm forbidden from doing something! They noticed me!

That is just so fscking cool! =^_^=

But thinking back, maybe, just maybe, deleting the comments was not the right thing. I mean, I suppose that just justifies it in his mind. So from here on out, I'm going to let this person make a fool of themselves.

Besides, how else should one treat a troll?

OK, so on May First, there's apparently some sort of march going on in downtown Seattle, and I know this from alerts posted on various local busses, as they are warning that this will affect many downtown busses. My commute doesn't go that way (and besides, the one that I take uses the transit tunnel anyway), but would somebody care to enlighten me as to what's up?

A corrolary to my last post
To those who don't follow or haven't been on the 'net very long, the tagline alludes to the so-called "Chuck Norris facts, which is an old internet gag showing just how tough Mr. Norris is.

But, I don't adhere to the current theories behind intelligent design. They are something I'd rather allow to let develop - and at the rate such theories develop, they are not something I'd expect to see come anywhere closer to a conclusion I agree with before I myself join the Choir Invisible.

(For point of reference, I am 33 years old. Assuming old age, I'll probably see Comet Halley come around again before I die.)

Chuck Norris Allows Evolution
Well, more or less. Read all about it, in Chuck's own words.

My non convention report
As you are no doubt aware, I did not go to All Fur Fun this past weekend. The weekend, however, was not a total loss.

Thursday - trip to the dentist. Cleaning done, dealt with, and that was that. Started doing some housekeeping, cleaning up the last of these boxes and prepping the last of Karmin's stuff to be shipped to her (which will hopefully be done soon). That afternoon, caught a bus to Seattle as to meet [info]ksharra and [info]xodiac at the train station. Xodiac departed for the con, and I returned to the east side with K'sharra as carpool dummy and navigator. After that it was various activities involving sushi, pool, alcohol, [info]jurann, and his 2,000" TV.

(She had introduced me to Sushiland. Wonderful place, I walked out about $25 lighter for the both of us.)

Friday was work. Not much to speak of.

Saturday was my dance class as usual, then a trip (after a shower, natch) out to Federal Way with K'sharra to a little place called Billiards 911, where there was a sale this past weekend. Got me a new cue stick, case, and a few other accoutrements, walked out about $125 lighter for the whole ordeal. I can now put my Sportcraft branded cue from Walmart into the fireplace - where it belongs. Spent the rest of the day with Jurann and K'sharra, without so much alcohol.

Sunday involved much cleaning. I'm down to about one or two boxes that I gotta go through to separate Karmin's stuff from mine, and after that it's a case of cleaning out the other boxes. I'm making progress there, and now have that part of my bedroom back. =O.o= That was broken briefly however by racking my mead to secondary, running out to the Crossroads meet, coming back, and making dinner.

Today was a day off. I had originally thought it was Free Ice Cream Day at our local Ben and Jerry's, however I was sadly mistaken - it's next Tuesday that this day falls on. Didn't do much, just some housework, ran around and dealt with stuff, hung out at Juanita Beach.

And tomorrow, work.

And that's been my weekend.

Yiedl to nothing
OK, before you click on this link, it helps to understand why I'm posting this. You need to look at this post in [info]mock_the_stupid in order to understand the joke, and have been exposed to a particular song about a clay dreidel.

And now, boys and girls, let's sing! )

Current Mood: silly
Current Music: The YIEDL song, of course!

Free Ice Cream Day
I can thank [info]hollyannvix for this reminder - today is Free Ice Cream Day at Ben and Jerry's.

And they have a store in downtown Kirkland.

This, as the cat says, is relevant to my interests.

Snow, again
On the eighteenth of April, in the year of Our Lord, 2008, a flakey white substance came down from above.

No, it was not me having a flareup of dandruff, it was snow.

In April.

In Spring.

In Seattle.

That is all.

Vacation scuttled, latest suit done
Bad news: I had to scuttle my trip to All Fur Fun.

It boils down to that [info]jurann, my ride, was unable to go to con for a reason that I will elect not to discuss on my journal - and the only other last minute ride I have is either Amtrak (which puts me down in Spokane after midnight and has me renting another room night, thusly costing me more than I really want to spend on going there) or another fan down off of Fort Lewis - who himself won't be departing until Friday afternoon and accordingly getting in late Friday.

In better news, if you've been reading a while, you know I've pondered remaking a certain costume I had commissioned. Well, I did it - and said costume is done. In fact, it's totally different and looks utterly fantastic - and I haven't even gotten the unitard back yet. =^_^= Go here to see details. I hope to be pulling this out in the near future - but some of you guys on the east side of the state will just have to come out west sometime.

Monday before con
OK, I leave for con on Friday. This means that I'll be walking into the petri dish known as a con hotel, rife with I don't know how many furry fans.

Which means that it would be wise of me to start loading up on antioxidants.

Or maybe just Airborne.

And by the looks of things, I'm gonna have to get more of the stuff. Off to the store....

Got a little bit of news about Fred Phelps, hsi family, and the Westboro Baptist Church.

In three words: they're in trouble.

For those allergic to the link: seems they were sued not long ago, lost, and owe somebody about $5M for picketing and protesting a funeral. Now, if an appeals court upholds the decision for the monetary award, the court might be able to obtain all the real property (i.e., land and buildings) held by Westboro Baptist in order to contribute to any monetary payoffs.

"Boy, Mr. Tax Man, am I glad to hear from you!"
Seems that in the mail today I got my approval letter from the Income Reduction Service, approving me for the installment agreement I applied for when I sent in my returns.

Ergo, my first payment goes out in two weeks, and my second payment one day after. Or thereabouts.
