filelight - show where your diskspace is being used
Allows you to exactly understand exactly your disk usage by graphically representating your filesystem as a set of concentric segmented-rings.

This package was suggested Clement R.:
filelight is a great tool for [to] see where your precious disk space is wasted. It's really nice look and good usabilty makes it necessary.

Some pretty cool screenshots here and here.

More information on this package can be found on the Debian web site.

Wow! It's uglier, requires proprietary Java, and is proprietary itself!

tkdu (http://unpythonic.net/jeff/tkdu/)

+
open source (GPL)
cross platform (python)
small single file/script
can use output of du as input (du -a | tkdu)
acceptable to gnome fanatics ;-)

-
large run-time (python)
static (delete a file? rerun tkdu)
bug with viewing root directory (/) or root of drive (C:\)
uses ugly tk (but hardly notice as user interface almost nonexistant)

best part for me: run "du -a /" as a nightly cronjob on a headless server, and graphically view its disk usage on a desktop whenever

I think filelight rocks! du is all well and good, and has its uses, but for me, on a laptop with limited HD space, this is really helpful.

thanks!

I like treemaps, and recently found kdirstat to be a good start: http://packages.debian.org/kdirstat
