Ameriphone repair? Hi, folks. I bought an Ameriphone system several years ago and I'm having problems with my 'remote' unit. I usually hit the single bar to turn my desk lamp on and off (and do the opposite for flashing). Lately, I have to really squeeze the bar in to get the light to turn on or off.
Does anybody know where I can either get this fixed in person (i.e., a deaf store) or send to the company for repair?
Thanks in advance. (6 signs | Sign to me) |

Signing commercial? Has anyone seen a commercial on Disney Channel or Nickelodeon for a Super Mario Brothers Wii game with some signing in it? I saw it twice on Saturday at a family reunion (I don't have cable), but I couldn't tell if it was ASL or not. Anybody?

Grad students? I'm curious...is anyone else here a (d/Deaf) grad student? I start my first year on Tuesday, as the only Deaf member of the department. I"m not even sure how many d/Deaf grad students the university has, actually. Everyone in the department is very nice, understanding, willing to work with interpreters, etc. My advisor has mentioned learning sign, and one of the other first years has actually learned some sign already, once he learned he'd have a Deaf classmate (me). I greatly appreciate that, I really do...but at the same time, it's not the same as having other deaf people around or knowing other deaf grad students. The first years have been having lots of mixers and parties to get to know each other, and it's been rather lonely, as I'm sure many of you can imagine. Current Mood: curious (7 signs | Sign to me) |

ADA Help? I'm sure someone here would know much better than I would... If a deaf child needs to be hospitalized (Inpatient Psychiatric/SHORT Term Stay), would an interpreter be provided full-time for the child? Thanks in advance. Current Mood: drained (9 signs | Sign to me) |

Text books I think college classes are starting soon so I've put some of my old sign text books: here and here. From what I recall about college text books I wish I had saved some $ by using ebay instead of the local stores. :( I also have the "Bird of a Different Feather / For a Decent Living" and "Signing Naturally 2" to put up but I didn't see any of those on ebay yet so I wasn't sure if they'd sell. If you're interested, let me know. I also need to get out my stack of interpreting books and figure out if they're wanted/needed anywhere. (3 signs | Sign to me) |

What is a good cell phone for someone who is both visually and hearing impaired? Ideally I would like large readable numbers and large text on the screen, and the ability to read text messages. I do not need internet access or email or anything else, really. I would use a Jitterbug if it had text capability, but apparently they don't.
I am thinking I might like to use a Voice-Over-Relay phone, but the problem is that I don't know if any come with screens that are suitable for visually impaired people. I'm not really looking for a Sidekick or Blackberry answer here since I know about them already. (4 signs | Sign to me) |

Newbie hello!! :) Hi everyone! My name is Pat, I am 26, and I am hearing, but joined the community because I have always loved and been fascinated and enthralled with Deaf culture and ASL since I was in kindergarten and made my first deaf friend. And I think ASL is a beautiful language. I have wanted to be an interpreter for the Deaf for a long time, but I only know basic signs and financially unable to attend ASL classes. But anyway, that out the window, all of my deaf friends now are online friends (text message with them, too. Plus I HATE speaking on the phone.) and all but one of them lives in Canada. In my experience Deaf people are very fun and crazy and up for anything like I am (and like some of my hearing friends are afraid to be) and I always have a lot of fun them. I have other "physical challenges" too, so there's also having something in common and a mutual understanding. I am shy at first so I have a close-knit group of friends here. I was hoping to find a local deaf friend in Tampa, FL to just hang out with, have a blast with, etc. If you're interested, please feel free to comment here or you can e-mail me at lilyth {at} gmail {dot} com. (Sorry to type it like that, but I don't want to feel the spambots. :D ) Thanks! ~Pat Current Mood: hopeful (Sign to me) |

Due to some unforeseen circumstances, I'm not going to be able to be near a hearing aid center for a while. Are there any places online where you can get ear molds? I don't know, they send you something and you can make it yourself? I know I'm reaching here, but I'm desperate. :( (7 signs | Sign to me) |

I ramble Hi, my name is Caitlin and I JUST joined this community. I am not deaf and i have no deaf people in my family. My only interaction with someone who is deaf is a guy I work with, Lemar. He is one of the sweetest people I have ever met and I love to talk to him via his sidekick or slow finger spelling(he really puts up with a lot to talk to me!). Anyway, I love sign language..I did it for my church (praising hands) and honestly I could talk to Lemar but, I am nervous i will mess up or say something wrong.(pretty childish, huh?)
Basically I was wondering what kind of careers there are for signing?..Other than education and court hearings? I will be going to school in the Spring for ASL and I am very excited. It's crazy to think that one person opened my eyes to something so wonderful..but, he did.
I am sorry I went on and on I would just love to get to know the culture better and start really getting into signing. (12 signs | Sign to me) |

Olympics? I have a question that prob. displays my ignorance of Deaf culture (been mainstreamed my whole life). I'm watching the olympics, especially gymnastics since I was once a level 10 gymnast (if there had been a closer gym i could have tried to go on to the elite level) and hopefully will be returning to compete this year. Are there are Deaf athletes in the olympics? Have there ever been??
I know there's the Deaflympics but i was wondering about the actual olympics. i'm profoundly Deaf (95 dB) and sign dependant and i know playing soccer as a little kid i had problems with communication. but not being able to hear never prevented me from suceeding in gymnastics. If anything the discipline and perserverance I learn helped me go from ASL to learning written and reading English, giving me the skills to succeed in a mainstream enviroment socially and academically.
(if you can't tell i just LOVE gymnastics!)
Thanks!!! (13 signs | Sign to me) |

wireless devices During my search for more information regarding Danger stopping its production of older model sidekicks (and focusing on the most recent and new models), I came across a Danger forum post. Apparently, Microsoft bought the Danger company. I am very curious to know what MS's view is on certain devices like the Sidekick. I am really hoping MS won't pimp up the Sidekick so much more; I just want a communication device, not a portable mini-computer. Makes me miss my old Ogo even more. On the other hand, I hope MS won't completely drop Sidekick in favor of PDA-style devices. But T-Mobile has the exclusive right to the Sidekick concept, so knows whether MS will honor this contract or expand it to include other service providers. Hopefully, other providers will be allowed to service the SK. However, I wonder what kind of plans the other providers would offer for the SK... (Sign to me) |

ASL Presentations Can anyone give me some good links to archives of video lectures, presentations, or sermons given in ASL? Subtitles, captions, or a transcript would be a nice bonus, but not absolutely necessary. Thanks!
