If you're a reader of Scatterplot, please consider answering this poll - I'll be using the results to decide which of the formats I'll use to lay out the Scatterplot books, and indeed to decide whether to go through with this project at all.
Poll #650695 Gauging interest for Scatterplot books
Open to: All, detailed results viewable to: AllFirst off, a general question. Would you consider buying a Scatterplot book? Would you buy a book of early Scatterplot strips (think vertical format) in monochrome? This would be around 120 pages, and cost around $7-$8. Which of these options would you consider purchasing for the full-page-format strips?
Thank you for your time. I really want to see Scatterplot published, and this data will go a long way towards determining how it's going to happen. Which of the following would increase your likelihood to buy one or more of the books? |

Oops, I thought that the monochrome thing was for the black and white strips. Speaking of those, where will those be compiled?
Ah, I wasn't clear in that. The full-page monochrome strips would be colored to go into the full-color book. There are only 59 full-page monochrome strips - coloring them wouldn't be that big a deal, I don't think.
That's great!!!
What about the earlier strips, though? The four paneled vertical strips?
Doh, hahaha! I didn't even remember that I had already answered that poll question XDDDD
I'd love to buy books of all my favourite webcomics, but I'm currently limited by the fact that I have no income and am living off savings until I get either new research funding or a job. When that happens, I can decide if I have enough to get the things I want (books, electronics) or just the things I need (food, shelter).
Yeah, I know how that goes. And that's among the reasons why I'm selling the books at cost - I'm far more interested in getting Scatterplot books into the hands of as many people as possible than making money off my readers. I have the luxury of a day job, after all.
I wish there were a cheaper way to get full-color books...I suspect some of my answers would be different if I didn't know my funding runs out in June. :Þ

+We know you're going to buy it, anyway. Which of the following types of fanservice would you drool over? Now, if only you knew of an online bookstore where you could sell it...
Actually, Lulu lets me sell through Amazon. However, I'm not sure that's workable with my current model, which is selling the books at cost. Oh, well.
(Hm. Should I have added a "fanservice" option on the poll?)
XD The answer to that question is "yes"!

YES! HOT NEKKID PICTURES OF MR. SEXY!!!
do monochromatic except for the strips that rely on color
That's not really feasible, unfortunately. If I'm going to include both color and b/w pages in a book, it'll be as expensive as having the entire thing in color, because of the restrictions on the print-on-demand format.
Were I doing a "real" print run, I'd definitely look into that option, though.
Nah, don't be sorry, it's a good idea, and I wish I could pull it off.
Come to think of it, I'm going to make extra sure I can't, cause if I can I'd like to do that.
...Yeah, from Lulu's FAQ:
"IMPORTANT: The cost of color books (available only for books purchased through Lulu) is significantly more than black & white books. When you select color printing (the Full Color option on the Publish Book page), you are charged $.15 for every page in the book, not just pages with color. The printing costs for a 100-page book would be $19.53 ($15.00 printing + $4.53 setup)." | |
