Art or porn? [Jul. 25th, 2008|09:48 am]

Link to an overseas article talking about Australia's recent Bill Henson fiasco. Interesting seeing an overseas perspective. Article may be NSFW since it contains a picture featuring artistic child nudity.

I know my thoughts (rant coming soon), what are yours?

I, Davros review [Jul. 23rd, 2008|10:08 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | satisfied]

While I've been sorting in the library the last four nights, I've also been listening to I, Davros by Big Finish Productions. It's one of the bonus audio plays included on the Complete Davros Collection.

It's long, each of the four parts running an hour or more, but overall quite good. Review continues and contains minor spoilers... )

New transport. [Jul. 22nd, 2008|01:04 pm]
[mood | cheerful]

On the weekend Sharon and I tried out two trikes from Fuse Recumbents. I came away from a 4km ride with no issues, and the 8-month preggo chick's only issue going up a hill was that her belly was getting in the way enough to stop her.

So shortly I shall possess a secondhand, 1993 Greenspeed trike, with trailer so I can take parcels down to the post office. Very happy about this. It'll save us some petrol money, and it's a form of exercise that is fairly low impact. Combined with my swimming lessons, I'll hopefully be doing good, exercise-wise.

[info]arcadiagt5, a long-time trike supoorter/pusher, is over the moon.

Recent watchings 03 - Hammer Horror Films Part 1 [Jul. 22nd, 2008|02:27 am]

[mood | enthralled]

Been sitting up late at night watching Hammer Horror films with mum. I was going to wait until I'd gone through the run, but tonight's was so good, I had to post up what I had so far. So here are thoughts on the first four Hammer Frankenstein and Dracula flicks... )

Four down, twelve to go, and so far it's been well worth the ride.

Lies [Jul. 21st, 2008|04:01 pm]

[mood | devious]

During my recent post on the baby, Grant got me started on the topic of terrible lies to tell children. My favourite came from [info]rendragon and was -

When the ice cream van is playing the music, it means all the ice cream is gone.

My favourite of my own was -

Carpet tastes like fairy floss

So, who's got more?

Fangs of the Living Dead [Jul. 18th, 2008|08:57 pm]

[mood | geeky]

If you ever get the chance to watch this 1969 Italian vampire film, don't. They had a real, and very nice, castle, and somehow managed in some shots to make it look like a bad model.

Not so bad it's good, just bad. Even the Wasp Woman (1960) had more amusement value.

[mood | sick]

I have a cold. It's to be expected. I'm mixing with a lot of people with swimming and such, not to mention going from a heated pool to the Canberra cold. It's slowing down my progress on getting through things, but I'm not fussed.

I was actually feeling crap enough that I spent several hours lying in bed yesteday. At one point, as I was lying there, I thought "Ahhhh.... this is a luxury I won't have shortly." Once my Manitou demon-spawn comes bursting out Sharon's back (how many people get that reference?) being able to actually rest while sick will become a thing of the past. thought on uncoming parenty stuff below cut. )

Grand Sale on DVDs! [Jul. 17th, 2008|11:03 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | cheerful]

Roadshow is having reduced prices on most of its older Doctor Who stock! It's very, very rare that they do this, so make the most of it!

I can do any of the titles below the cut for $22.50 each, plus postage. Anyone ordering four titles or more will get free postage. My order will have to be in at the end of this month, as that's when the sale ends.

I have many of these up on eBay at the moment at higher prices because I bought them while more expensive. DVDs below cut... )

Also for sale, for those that are interested, I have 3 Chameleon Arch Fob-watches from the new series. The watch is plastic, the chain is metal, the sound/speech is loud. My mum now owns one of these.

I should be able to get more in, but at the moment I only have three for sale at $32.50 each. First come first served on the watches, so probably best to comment if you want one.

Comments here or email me on - dannydoz @ netspace dot net dot au - to make any orders

It's all me, baby! [Jul. 16th, 2008|11:21 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | hopeful]

Swimming exhausts me for the entire next day, so you can imagine how buggered I am tonight after a lesson. I'm at the tired level where all my filters start to shut down one by one, so anything that's in my head starts to just come out. Fortunately typing filters things a little bit. But not much. I only just avoided replying to someone by saying, "Just send money... or naked pictures..." Given I don't know them that well, I rethought that one... just...

Anyway, my point here is my general silliness. After ten years of marriage, Sharon has just discovered that the silly stuff I do around her, mum, and other people, I also do when I'm on my own.

I thought she knew!

I was really surprised. I mean, I wasn't hiding it. Hell, I can't pass a mirror without gurning, or checking out how my body looks in different poses, and trying to decide which pose is funniest/stupidest/most likely to get a laugh. I talk to myself in silly voices. I mean I couldn't be as constant with my silliness if I wasn't this way when she wasn't around. The facade would slip. Oh I have my serious, quiet times. Lots of them. But the random acts of stupidity are always lurking in the background. And just because no-one else is present, so what?!

Shaz - 'I didn't realise you still do this stuff when you have no audience!'
Me - 'There's always an audience. Just because I can't see them doesn't mean they aren't there.'

[info]harveystoat, [info]gutter_monkey? I figure you're the two who would most be likely to do the same.

Life's too short not to be enjoying it every instant you can. Back me up, someone!

Special people [Jul. 16th, 2008|09:26 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[mood | cheerful]

Last day or two I've been going through one of those periods I regularly go through, where I feel quite deeply the influence people have had on my life, and my appreciation of them. Some of them are folks that I don't see or talk to very often at all, but just knowing they are out there does wonders for me. They brighten my day just by existing. Cut for rambly explanations the like of which you've read before, so why bother? I mean really? )

So why not do it yourself. Send someone (not me) a brief message telling them... something! It can be appreciation for who they are, or things that they've done for you or other people. But do it! You don't have to wait for a reason, the fact that they are your friend and great should be reason enough.

Of ya go, ya buggers. Get writing!

Original Twilight Zone - Season 1 [Jul. 15th, 2008|05:09 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]
[mood | impressed]

Finally finished the original Twilight Zone's first season. In short, pretty damned good.

It says a hell of a lot for the quality of the writing that the majority of the episodes still hold up so very well. I hadn't seen the lion's share of the stories, making it even more enjoyable. There are Twilight Zone tales that most people have either seen or at least know by reputation, but there are also some episodes scattered throughout the season that are pure gold and deserve at least as much attention.

If you're a fan of good television and good writing, and don't own it, you're missing out.

Reviews of all the first season episodes under the cut. Minimal spoilers only, mostly to act as memory joggers for those that have seen them... No final twists given away, honest! )

Doctor Who Original Series - The Aztecs (1.27 - 1.30) [Jul. 13th, 2008|01:16 am]
[Tags|]
[mood | awake]

The Aztecs - Contains spoilers... )

The Aztecs 8/10

Another story where the sum of the parts outweighs the strengths and weaknesses of individual episodes. After the first episode it basically becomes mainly about trying to thwart the multiple schemes of Tlotoxl, and it suffers a little because of that. However where it lacks in variety from a plot perspective, its strengths as a character piece are solid.

Doctor Who Original Series - The Keys of Marinus (1.21 - 1.26) [Jul. 10th, 2008|10:29 pm]
[Tags|]
[mood | accomplished]

Been a while since my last episode-by-episode reviews. Most of first season was already written up, I just haven't gotten around to posting it. But now we continue with Keys of Marinus - Mild spoilers follow in episode descriptions )

The Keys of Marinus 5.8/10

While not a bad story, Marinus is just not as engaging as its predecessors. In fact, it feels more like old 1940s serials, with a series of set-pieces to make up for a real plot. There's nothing wrong with that concept, a series of challenges in different locations, but it relies on the various settings and challenges to be interesting and engaging, and the first half of the story doesn't quite manage it.

I think the key difference is that in the first few episodes the travellers are just carried along by events, where as from part 4 onwards they are involved a little more. More spoilers... )

That said, a good job is done by the production team with each of the worlds, attempting to make them interesting and different.

Recent watchings 02 - Universal Horror Films [Jun. 30th, 2008|10:00 pm]

[mood | cheerful]

As mentioned in a previous post, been very busy lately, which also tends to leave me knackered, so I've been watching some movies late evening before I head to bed. A chunk of the original Universal Monster movies, to be precise. All this was written, except for the last film, well over a week ago. Story of my life these days.

Here are some random thoughts... May contain spoilers for some of these films, you have been warned... )

Ow! Bastard! Owowowow!

Well, that's likely to disrupt my plans for the day!

Worst thing? In amongst the nausea, pain, and leg weakness, my hormones are bubbling! Why?! I mean seriously, even if I had the opportunity, my skin hurts to the touch! Where would be the fun?! Stupid body!

Tell me of your good day, or weekend! Danny demands it!

Just a warning... [Jun. 29th, 2008|09:30 pm]
[Tags|, ]
[mood | thoughtful]

Stay away from all Doctor Who related news until after you've seen episode 13 of the new series. There are some cool surprises in episode 12 and it will be so very easy to have them spoiled.

Given that some over you will be watching the series as the ABC airs it, that means avoiding spoilers for the next 3 months. Love or hate what they are doing in the show, it's worth it to come to it fresh.

That was a golden hour... [Jun. 23rd, 2008|08:57 pm]

[mood | amused]

Tonight's Top Gear was better than sex. They had to drive three second-hand across Africa, and it was the funniest thing I have seen in ages. Sharon laughed so hard she nearly coughed up a lung.

That is all.
