Happy Friday the 13th - re post w/update

Friday occurring on the 13th day of any month is considered to be a day of bad luck in many superstitions around the globe. Similar superstitions exist in some other traditions. In Greece and Spain, for example, Tuesday the 13th takes the same role. "The fear of Friday the 13th is called paraskavedekatriaphobia, paraskevidekatriaphobia or friggatriskaidekaphobia, a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a phobia (fear) of the number thirteen."

The modern basis for the aura that surrounds Friday the 13th stems from Friday October the 13th, 1307. On this date, the Pope of the church in Rome in Conjunction with the King of France, carried out a secret death warrant against "the Knights Templar". The Templars were The Templars were terminated , deemed heretics, never again to hold the power that they had held for so long. Their Grand Master, Jacques DeMolay, was arrested and before he was killed, was tortured and crucified.

There are many theories surrounding the number 13. At the "Last Supper" there were 13 guests in attendance. Most christians believe Jesus to be the 13th at feast, occurring just before he was Crucified. Most paintings depict the disciples and Jesus at a table, but evidence suggests that the last supper was not conducted at a table. Rather the participants were seated on the ground where it was cooler. If one started with Judas, Jesus became the 13th guest. Conversely, if the count began at Jesus, it was indeed Judas who was 13. Both options would contribute to the mystique surrounding 13: Jesus, for he was killed soon after the feast, Judas for he was the betrayer of Jesus.

Though not proven some have claimed to be a 13th tribe of Israel. The bible proclaims only 12, and a very high percentage of Christians and Jews deny that a 13th tribe even exist. However, a few recognize that a group had, falsely, identified themselves as a 13th tribe. The members of the "13th tribe" were labeled as "witches" and "sorcerers," a evil group who determine to destroy followers of God. Which further illustrates the false propaganda Christian organizations are willing to put forth in order to label witchcraft as evil.

Friday the 13th comes into play when it is observed that Jesus was Crucified on a Friday. Obviously, should one chose to accept this theory, the day associated with the death of their Savior would lend to the supposed bad luck which occupies this particular date. It is also said that it was a Friday when Adam and Eve ate the fruit. Friday used to be the 6th day of the week, it was not until more recent times that it became the 5th day. 6, being the number biblically associated with man, relates to the Devil. 3 is the number of the Holy Trinity, therefore with 6 being the number of man, 666 was denoted as the number of the Beast. (A Trinity of Six, signifying the God of Man, Satan.)

Also, any month with a Friday the 13th must begin with a Sunday the 1st. Curiosity leads one to ask if a significance lies in the observation that only months that begin with the day God decided to rest (Sunday), after "creating the world," yield a day of such supposed demonic evil and misfortune.

To the Norse Friday was the luckiest day of the week, being named after Freya, one of their Deities. Also named after Venus, in Rome and France. To continue on, perhaps extending a bit further in the past than Christian influence, a mythological occurrence presents: At the banquet in Valhalla, of which there were 12 guests, Loki, God of Deceit, intruded, becoming the uninvited 13th guest.

In Norse mythology, Balder was the god of light and beauty. The most beloved of the gods, he was the son of Odin and Frigg and the husband of Nanna, goddess of the Moon. Balder was killed by Loki’s treachery during the proceedings. Through Loki’s interference, the return of Balder, from the possession of Hel, was an impossible task. To return Balder, Hel demanded that all living things beg for the god’s return. All respond except a giantess, Thokk (Loki in disguise), whose refusal to weep forces Balder to remain in Hel's domain.

There are 13 members which make up a coven. 13 was sacred because it represented the amount of lunar months in year (Thirteen Full Moons).

13 being a sacred number to most Pagan traditions was therefore deemed evil by early Christians. For a superstition to spread so far it must be distributed through a largely influential source, such as Christianity. 13 is still considered good luck in Italy, (home of the Roman Catholic church), which separated from the rest of Christianity due to conflicting political and theological disagreements. Moreover, Friday was considered sacred by both Norse traditions and Muslims, both which are considered enemies to Christianity. Instituting Friday the 13th as a day of evil worked to prevent losing followers to either path, utilizing fear as a binding weapon.

A recent article shows that a new superstition has been "invented"' involving the number 13. Now some serial killers has been bunched under the 13 letter group, and it goes something like this:

Jack the Ripper- 13 letters
John Wayne Gacy- 13 letters
Charles Manson- 13 letters
Jeffrey Dahmer- 13 letters
Theodore ( Ted ) Bundy- 13 letters

*If you're an Artist of any type PLEASE READ THIS!*
Repost from: [info]tina_imel

Please repost!

I just got a very unsettling e-mail from my friend Madeline (www.madelinevonfoerster.com) concerning copy right law.  I encourage you to read what she's said here but to put it succinctly if this bill goes through we are all fucked.

 "Hello everyone,

Under current copyright law, in effect for the last 30 years, your
visual art is copy protected whether or not it is registered or carries
the copyright symbol.

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to introduce
the Orphan Works Act of 2008. If you care about protecting your work,
you're against it. It will have the effect of wiping out any copyright
on visual art now in existence, throwing your work into the public
domain. If you wish to protect your work (each and every separate piece)
you will have to digitize it and register it with private sector
registries as yet uncreated, for a fee as yet unestablished. I say
registries because this bill places no limit on how many separate
registries there could be.

It gets worse.  Anyone can submit images, including your images. They
would then be excused from any liability for infringement (also known as
THEFT) unless the legitimate rights owner (you) responds within a
certain period of time to grant or deny permission to use your work.

That means you will also have to look through every image in every
registry all the time to make sure someone is not stealing and
registering your art. You could actually end up illegally using your own
artwork or photo if someone else registers it.

Please read more in this excerpt from illustratorspartnership.org;  I
know it's long, but it's worth reading.  Also, note that while their
site is geared to illustrators, everything they say applies as well to
photographers, musicians, filmmakers, painters, writers, etc:

Since the last bill died in committee in 2006, the advocates of this
legislation have promoted the creation of private commercial registries.
On January 29, 2007, a lead attorney for the Copyright Office warned us
that under their plan any work not registered with a private sector
registry would be a potential orphan from the moment it was created.

This means you would not only have to register your published work, but
also:

— Every sketch or note on every page of every sketchbook;
— Every sketch you send to every client;
— Every photograph you take anywhere, anytime, including family photos,
home videos, etc.;
— Every letter, e-mail, etc., professional, personal or private.

This Would End Passive Copyright Protection: Under existing law the
total creative output of any “creator” receives passive copyright
protection from the moment you create it. This covers everything from
the published work of professional artists to the unpublished diaries,
letters and family photos of the average citizen.

But under the Orphan Works proposal, none of this material would be
covered unless the creator took active steps to register and maintain
coverage with a commercial registry. Failure to do so would “signal” to
infringes that you have no interest in protecting the work.

The Registration Paradox:
By conceding that their proposals would make potential orphans of any
unregistered works, the Copyright Office proposals would lead to a
registration paradox: In order to “protect” work from exposure to
infringement, creators would have to expose it on a publicly searchable
registry. This would:

— Expose creative work to plagiarists and derivative abusers;
— Expose trade secrets and unused sketches to competitors;
— Expose unpublished and private correspondence to the public on the
Orwellian premise that you must expose it to “protect” it.

Yet registries will not be able to monitor infringements nor enforce
copyright compliance. Even after you've shelled out “protection money”
to a commercial registry to register hundreds of thousands of works, you
still won't be protected. A registry would do nothing more than give you
a piece of paper. You would still have to monitor infringements - which
can occur anytime anywhere in the world; then embark on an uncertain
quest to find the infringe, file a case in Federal court, then prove
that the infringer has removed your name or other identifying
information from your work. Meanwhile all the infringer will have to do
is say there was no such information on the work when he found it and
assert an orphan works defense.

Coerced registration violates the spirit and letter of international
copyright law and copyright-related treaties. And because this bill
would effectively eliminate the passive copyright protection afforded
personal correspondence, family photos, etc. it would tear one more
slender thread of privacy protection from the fabric of fundamental
rights we currently take for granted.

We urge Congress to carefully reconsider the unintended consequences of
this radical copyright proposal.

— Brad Holland and Cynthia Turner, for the Board of the Illustrators’
Partnership

So, what to do about this?  More from the Illustrators Parnership
website:

March 19, 2008

We expect a bill to be released after the Easter recess. Sources say it
will be introduced in the House and Senate simultaneously, and
fast-tracked for a vote in the House by mid-May. Advocates hope for
swift passage before the summer recess.

The decision to introduce such a radical bill so late in the session is
ominous. Because of fall elections, this will be a short Congressional
year. Any bill not passed by the end of Congress will have to
re-introduced in the next Congress. That means the bill’s sponsors must
know they have their ducks lined up.

So, I urge everyone to:

GET ON ORPHAN WORKS E-MAIL LIST

To be notified of the latest information on the Orphan Works bill and
when to contact your legislators, send an email to
illustratorspartnership@cnymail.com and ask to be added to the Orphan
Works list.  You can also visit the IPA Orphan Works Resource Page for
Artists for more information, because I didn't even detail all the
disgusting facets of this shocking legislation:http://www.illustratorspartnership.org/01_topics/article.php?searchterm=00185

Both House and Senate versions of the Orphan Works Act of 2008 can be
downloaded from the IPA homepage: http://illustratorspartnership.org/

Jared Gold’s Czarina - Spring 2008 Runway Event
Cross posted to [info]gothmagazinewww

Designer Jared Gold's spectacular collection transformed modern day muses into ladies reminiscent of a postmodern Belle Époque. His designs showcased fun, flirty, fashionable pieces which would appeal to any modern day fashionista.

From the moment the models emerged in their Marie Antoinette stylized hairpieces, it was clear this was a show not to be missed. As a known fashion renegade, Gold's "Czarina" was a celebration of the La Belle Époque period juxtaposed with a modern cutting edge.
