    Savings
I've been thinking lately that laser eye surgery might be money well-spent. Regardless of what happens to the economy, and definitely in case of a zombie apocalypse, perfect eyesight will serve me well*. I could save and save and still not beat the poor economy when it comes to house-buying and retirement.

*It's going to be hard enough to find and carry gasoline and bullets, I don't want to worry about breaking my crappy glasses once contact lens maintenance becomes inconvenient.

    Horoscope
    From Freewillastrology.com:

Pisces: Please don't get sidetracked by the pursuit of minor dreams that would give you trivial satisfaction. And please talk yourself out of going after ephemeral rewards that would at best provide you with a false sense of accomplishment. Here's why this advice is even more important than usual: You have an intense but limited amount of driving ambition available to you at the moment, so you've got to make sure you use it on a project or projects that will still be meaningful to you a year from now.

I forgot who all I told about this, and I still can't explain why I find it so hilarious.

Has anyone else -not- been receiving comment/reply notifications by email the last couple of days?

It's hard to reply when you don't know the conversation's going on, and it's hard to remember where to check back. Apologies to anyone I appear to be ignoring.

UPDATE- Friday 10/26 I seem to be getting notifications again, but I still don't know what happened to everything earlier in the week. Hm.

    Free computer stuff
    "Congratulations, you made a toaster."

[info]paxindustria helped me transfer files and wipe my old desktop computer last night. I now have an HP Pavilion 4440 to give away, free to a home that isn't mine. I'll put it on Craigslist, but if any of you want it, leave a comment. I also have an HP Pavilion monitor (M50? M-something with a 5, I think), free if you can come pick it up.

Not only am I giving away wonders of a previous technological age, but I'm looking for some in return--in particular, a vacuum cleaner. I'll browse Craigslist while I'm there posting the computer, but if you have a free or cheap vacuum to unload, please let me know.

    Peruvian delicacies
Ok, so who put the caiman from Savenor's in my freezer? Annabelle says it wasn't her, Mishak doesn't think it was him....

Thank you, mysterious benefactor. I am quite excited to eat it.

This week just keeps rocking. I expect my 3 hrs' sleep to catch up with me any minute, but I still feel great. Peru did marvelous things for my stamina, and Feather_brain70 and I were on a wavelength with DJ Chris at Crypt last night. I'll be out tomorrow night, too.

    Notes
What god did I offend to have Michael Bolton's "Said I Loved You But I Lied" stuck in my head for four days running?

I got home from the airport around 2pm on Wednesday, and they had changed the locks while I was gone. I called Annabelle before flipping out just to confirm, then found that I was able to get in the back door because the neighbors hadn't thrown the deadbolt. We do now have keys for the deadbolt, but they were upstairs in my apartment, along with the new key for the front door.

All of our hotels in Peru had hot water, but now my apartment does not.

The medication I've been taking for malaria has done more damage to my system than anything I got in Peru, except for maybe the hangover that I combined with it. Canongrrl suspects she got salmonella from the eggs in Saturday night's Pisco Sours, but I blame the rum in the Cuba Libres for me. I'm pretty sure I had more Sours than everybody else, but perhaps from a different batch.

I didn't understand what they meant about high altitudes until I walked a block or climbed a couple of stairs in Cuzco. I drank all the coca tea I could get my hands on, and while I liked it better than regular green tea, I didn't notice any appreciable effects. Perhaps the altitude would have felt worse without it, but it certainly didn't keep me up nights with brilliant insights or a newfound love of life. I was too chicken to bring a box back to give out teabags as novelty souvenirs, but I was thinking of you.

I ate alpaca and guinea pig (cuy) in Peru. We met a Frenchman on a hillside who had a monkey in his jacket.

I peed in the Peruvian rain forest! I was lucky not to see any tarantulas, though I did threaten promise to overturn our 6-person canoe by leaping screaming from it if someone didn't take care of the 2" spider sitting next to me.

Alpacas were so cute and fluffy, I wanted to put my face on them. My armpits were also pretty fluffy after not shaving for 12 days, though I was much cleaner and less matted than the alpacas.

In Peru, for $40USD, you can get a guy to run off a cliff with you.

    Paragliding over Miraflores was awesome.

The view from the 9th floor in Harvard Sq. is impressive. I love a good storm, but I'm less excited to walk home in it. Good luck to you bikers.

    Borrowing a hat
Does anyone have a safari/fisherman/floppy hat I could borrow for my trip to Peru? I'm leaving this Saturday, so I'd need to collect it this week, and I could get it back to you after June 1st. Must be easy to pack.

    Yahoo errors, slow computers
First, Yahoo was giving me an "error on page" message, and the reply, forward, etc. buttons weren't working; I couldn't add email addresses by shortcuts and actually had to remember the whole address or go look it up in the address book first.

Now, incoming email bodies appear blank and only sometimes show up if I hit refresh. Today, they're not.

Does anyone have any ideas why Yahoo would suddenly have issues on my laptop at home? It works fine on other computers (ie at work).

My other issue is with my work computer, which suddenly as of a couple of weeks ago started running like a snail. Applications take a long time to open and then move slowly. One of my coworkers is having the same problem. Is it possible we got hit with a bunch of ad crap that doesn't show up but that slows our systems?

    Shoulder update
I finally saw a doctor last Thursday for my 10/22/06 shoulder injury. I saw the orthopedist this morning and scheduled an MRI for this Thursday evening and follow-up orthopedic appointment for next Monday. My surgery will be scheduled before mid-March so that I'll be healed enough to go to Peru end of May.

    PSA: Not with the emailing
I'm at home today, having switched my flex day so that I can write my take-home final paper that's due tonight in class. Yahoo isn't working properly on my laptop. I can't reply to messages and it's not filling in addresses when I try to start a new email, so it's more trouble than it's worth to go look up anything I don't have memorized (which, like cell phone numbers now that phones store them, is most of them) since I should be working on my paper anyway. I hope to get back to you tomorrow if you've emailed me since yesterday afternoon. If it's important, call.
