Economical Grommet Setter.

I caved in and bought this at Lacis the other day. It cost me $55 and came with a size 00 die - I got charged $10 for a size 0 die and have since realized I got rooked for that but, what the heck...

I've used it a lot in the past 3 days - I've got eight corsets in my pipeline - and I'm quite happy with it. The grommets don't come out quite as prettily as they might with a $160 table-mounted press, but they're set firmly and don't split which is better than my average of splitting one out of every eight when I hammer them in. I've also got an iffy back and lousy upper-body strength, so this purchase was also made for the sake of my aching muscles. :)

In general, Johanna-Bob gives it the thumbs up. It's moderately priced and I'm confident that it will tide me over until I decide to take the plunge and get something a little more heavy-duty.

Puts on Maintainer Hat: Don't forget to add something to the memories if you can!

Thankyer. It's working out really well, actually. As I said, the grommets aren't *quite* as pretty as the ones I"ve seen churned out by a serious table-mounted press, but they don't split, and they squish as they should. Definitely a valid purchase, imho. :)

i'm really confused. the setter on Lacis comes with a 00 die. but i can't find any other of these grommet setters online that come with the 00 die. for instance, would this one on ebay have the correct setting:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8104465906&category=28137&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

i'm completely confused and will probably just buy the one on Lacis because it says 00 and i don't want to buy something that isn't right.

how is it working out? can the grommets take a bit of tightlacing?

The machine is working out great and, yes, as long as you adjust it when setting the grommets (always test on some scrap layers of your corset fabric, first) then I believe it could certainly take the strain of tightlacing.

I *think* that the 00 die is the default that comes with the tool...

that's what i'm thinking too... and $35 is a really good deal for both the kit and the setter. i emailed the seller but she hasn't emailed me back yet. thanks for your help! i really appreciate it. :)

I think Fedora has this kind of tool at a default install, right. I only used Fedora for half a day so I do not really remember.

Hi, i found this post via (?) the memories and i think i need the desktop eyelets setter. Does it set one-piece eyelets or eyelets that consist(?) out of 2 pieces?

Grommets - they consist of two pieces, an eyelet and a washer.

Oh, it *can* set those dinky little eyelets, I suppose, but the die can set two-piece grommets, and that's what I've been using for the past 18 months or so. :)

ah okay. but do you buy the eyelets at the company that also sold you the tool or do you get different ones?

ah okay. but i use 5mm eyelets, do you think they will fit in the tool?

I don't know.

The tool comes with a certain size die as a standard (I can't remember as I sit here at work if that's a 0 or 00 die). It will only work with those sized grommets/eyelets.

You might want to contact the manufacturer again (it sounds like you've already been in touch) and ask if what you're planning to use (sounds like regular eyelets from the fabric store, right?) will fit in the default die that comes with the tool.

Personally, my opinion is that if you're going to make a corset, use two-piece eyelets (0 or 00, that's an aesthetic decision) as they look nicer and are stronger than regular one-piece eyelets. But if eyelets are all you've got, then I guess you've gotta make 'em work. :)

I usually pick up a gross or so (rebagged) at a local costuming event, so I couldn't tell you the name of the manufacturer if my life depended on it... Sorry!

Just thought I would reference this as I found it helpful in buying grommets from different sources. Found that the 00 die is 4.5mm or 5/32" when set. The 0 size die is 6mm or 1/16" when set. Hope that this helps. Here is my source: http://www.farthingales.on.ca/grommets.php

How many different grommet sources have provided you with pieces that fit the setter? If ours match up (like corsetmaking.com) I think I might buy the setter.

I'll have to go rummaging for the URL, but there's a place online that sells a kit for about $20, that's *all* the dies for the HomePro - eyelet/grommet setting, snaps, etc.

When I bought the setter, it included the 0 die free, and Lacis had the dies for 00 and "miniature" (teeeeeeeny weeny ornamental eyelets) for sale on site.

I'm sorry, I meant the suppliers of grommets that fit the setter. I would like that link, though, if you find it.

Oh! My bad!

In small quanties, I get 'em from a place here in the Bay Area (Lacis for the fancy sort, Ace Hardware if I want bog-standard yellow metal) and for big bags, I wait for Costume Con (or go online) and get 'em from Alter Years.

Sizes are standardized, so if you've got a size 0 die and order size 0 grommets (or 00 and 00, you get the idea), you'll be fine.

I finally bought this grommet setter and am finding that this is not true. The 00 grommets I get from corsetmaking.com don't fit the 00 die for the homepro

Eyelets vs Grommets description

Hopefully this link will work:
http://www.siska.com/tip6.htm

Siska makes both eyelets and grommets and they are the only place I have seen willing to state what the difference is.

Are they correct? Dunno but it makes sense

UK Grommet setters

Does anyone know where these can be obtained in the UK?

I have looked online for a UK based supplier, with no luck. I resent paying nearly as much to ship it as the tool actually costs.
