6/13/08 12:09 am - The Help that Hurts the Poor.

True charity is wise and discriminating, and shows itself quite as often in withholding as in giving. It rarely happens that any one falls blamelessly into extreme destitution. The steps that lead downwards to indigence, want and suffering, are usually along the ways of idleness, thriftlessness, vice or crime, and and the only means whereby recovery from these conditions is possible, lies in a voluntary or enforce return to an industrious, sober and orderly life. Help for the idle and vicious poor- the doling out of food and clothing to those who would rather beg than work- is a kind of charity that does more harm than good. If hunger cannot be appeased through beggary, it will gain by work that needed sustenance; or- and it many seem a hard saying, but we will say it notwithstanding- if a man would rather starve than work, he had better be left to starve. The world is nothing more to him, nor he to the world, and the time has come for them to part company.

In any view of the case, the poorest service which we can render to the lazy, the thriftless and the vicious, is to encourage them in their idleness. So long as a man is, from choice, an idle and useless member of society- we care not how high or how low his condition- he is incapable of moral or spiritual improvement. He cannot, in any true sense, become a better man, and is in great danger of becoming worse. If we would truly help him, we must get him to work at something that will be useful to others. This is a state of true order- the order of the human body, in which each part serves the whole, and in turn is sustained by the whole- and whether it be voluntary or enforced, he who comes into it comes into a state of possible improvement. The meal which we give to a lazy beggar does him no real good, but rather harm, for it comes in to bar him from the only way of improvement and moral elevation- the way of work.

6/12/08 11:48 pm - Drunkards in France Cannot Vote or Hold Office.

We hear it constantly declared that, in France, wine-drinking prevents drunkenness. And yet, to so great a magnitude has this evil grown in that country, that Government has passed a law, That every one condemned twice by the police for the crime of open drunkenness, shall be deprived of the right to vote, of elective eligibility, and of being named for the jury or any public office. A similar law in this country would exclude a vast army of incompetent voters from the polls, and give us better men in thousands of responsible positions.

1/4/08 05:58 pm - update

So.

I got a stomach virus last week and was sick enough to lose almost 10 lbs. in 2 days.

Then, on Sunday morning my mom woke me up with a phone call telling me that a boy I grew up with (my mom's best friends' son-- I've known him since he was 2 days old--we were 1 yr apart) had blown his head off with a dear rifle.

Dealt with that all week, funeral was yesterday.

This morning my mom called to tell me that my Aunt (her brothers wife) had passed away over night from a massive heart attack. I think she about 45.

So.

If you are waiting on something from me, please bear with me, I promise it will be on it's way shortly.

That stupid woman sold my treadle when I didn't contact her for 1 day. :(

The 201 is locked up but otherwise pristine I will get picks soon. I am going to have it serviced and then she should be fine. If I knew what to do to unlock the gears I would do it myself because my sewing machine repair shop is gone! Just moved away like my Joann's and Hobby Lobby. I'm sure my Hancock Fabrics will be the next to go.

The people closer who do sewing machine repair are freakin' rude, and I don't want to to have to take it to down town Atlanta.

I taught Emily how to knit last night!!! She is the cutest thing ever!

11/26/07 12:59 pm - Sewing Machine for Sale

I have decided to give up my beloved Singer CG-590 C. The CG is for Commercial Grade.

I purchased this machine New 2 years ago for $299. I have had it serviced twice in the past 2 years ($70 each time), and I have replaced the bobbin case once ($15). I have around $450 in this machine. I believe I have all of the receipts for the machine. If you would like to have those I would be willing to dig around to find them.

The machine runs great, but it will need servicing again soon. How soon will be determined by how much you sew. (I would have it serviced again in a few months-- I sew about 10 hours a day).

I have cleaned and oiled it.

I am asking $230 + shipping. I prefer to ship within the US. Shipping weight is around 18 lbs. and will ship from 31029.

Features of this machine:

• 18 built-in stitch patterns
• 4-step buttonhole
• Motor is 60% stronger than standard machine
• Faster speed - up to 1,100 stitches per minute
• Free Arm
• Stainless steel bed plate
• Suction cup machine base
• Drop Feed
• Automatic Needle Threader (the hook that grabs thread is bent, but this can be replaced easily)
•Exclusive Electronic Foot Control - Guarantees a consistent speed with no jump starts. Includes a regulating dial that allows for slower speeds, regardless of the pressure applied.
•Snap-On Pressure Feet
•Automatic Reverse Button
•Built-in-Carrying Handle
•Automatic Pressure System
•Cabinet Mountable
•Balance Adjustment Lever for Perfect Buttonholes and Stretch Stitches

Includes:
•Zig-zag presser foot
•Zipper foot
•Spool pin holder (large)
•Spool pin holder (small)
•Finger Guard
•Manual
•Foot Pedal & Power Cord combination
•Original box
