Not 24 hours back from vacation, and I get sick. Geez.

Also, why the hell is it 50 degrees in the middle of May?

Nintendo has become the McDonald's of the gaming world. They don't sell video games anymore, they sell the Nintendo brand. Or Nintendo nostalgia. That's the only reason I can understand the obsession with Super Smash Brothers Brawl, since it's a ten-year-old fighting game, just with every Nintendo character ever made in it.

It tastes like burning! [Feb. 15th, 2008|07:00 pm]
So apparently Hampton Roads has turned into Southern California, as there have been a bunch of brush fires in the area over the past week or so. The wind has shifted so that all of the smoke from it has managed to settle in Virginia Beach, so the city has been in a haze today. And it smells like smoke outside.

Super Tuesday is more fun when it's not just one candidate winning all the states. And the maps have lots of pretty colors.

I'm getting tired of this "there's been a Bush or Clinton on the ballot in every election in the past 30 years" meme. If you think about it, there's been a Bush on the ballot in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections. On the other hand, there's been a Clinton on the ballot in 2 of the last 7 elections. So it's really the Bushes who are stinking up the presidential ballot.

Democratic Primary, Part Five [Jan. 26th, 2008|10:43 pm]
Obama: Change change change change change*.

Hillary: Vote for me because you like my husband.

Edwards: Hey, guys, I'm still here! No, wait, don't leave, I can tell you about the two Americas again...

*Change may not be honored.

On the one hand, it's obvious that the "economic stimulus package" is a bone being tossed to the American people. Especially with the inclusion of large tax breaks for (surprise surprise) businesses. And the tax refund is really just coming out of our own pockets, since it's deficit spending and is just an advance on next year's taxes.

On the other hand, I could use $600.

Before you die, you will see the ring. [Oct. 14th, 2007|10:02 am]
Our Xbox 360 got the ring of death yesterday. It's only 6 months old.

Of course, this during the time of year when all the good games are coming out: Mass Effect, Assassin's Creed, Beautiful Katamari...

At least Microsoft is sending us a prepaid box to ship it to be repaired. And no, I still don't want a Wii. Or a PS3.

Moving sucks. A lot. Thankfully, my coworker and her husband helped us move last weekend. Unfortunately, that still left a room's worth of stuff that had to be moved out, plus the entire place had to be cleaned. Subsequently, I feel like this weekend has been the first time off I've had in two weeks.

On the upside, the new apartment, while being more expensive, is much, much nicer than the old one. It's not any bigger, but it's laid out a lot more intelligently, so it seems bigger -- we can put in a dining room table, once we can afford to buy one. Also, the appliances are at least a decade newer than the old ones, if not more. And even though my cooking abilities are limited to boiling pasta, I can tell that the gas range is better to cook with than the electric one was. The only bad part is the incredibly weak shower head.

It's also much quieter here; not just with the lack of constant, thumping rap music, but with a private entrance rather than a hallway attached to the front door, we don't have to hear the comings and goings of everyone in the building (added bonus is we can actually park in front of our door, rather than in a parking lot). And it's off on a more secluded street, so there's less traffic. Even the Sound of Freedom (NAS Oceana jets) seems to be less noisy -- perhaps because they flew more or less directly over the old place.

Plus, the guy downstairs drives a Prius. That's cool in itself.

This is basically what's happened over the past week or so. Except there's been an encore presentation of graffiti today.

Suffice it to say, we're moving to another building/unit in the same apartment complex on Saturday. And I take back anything nice I said about the neighbors.

I get good advice from the advertising world [Jul. 1st, 2007|04:44 pm]
I'm a simple man when it comes to soda. Coke, Pepsi, Dr. Pepper... That's about it for me. I don't normally pay much heed to the various and sundry varietals of soda that they've decided to blast the market with in the past few years. But I did like the occasional Coke With Lime. Except they've apparently removed it from store shelves, because I couldn't find it when we went to the store on Friday. Diet Coke With Lime, sure. Regular? Nope. So, in order to satisfy my palate's demand for a fruit-tinged soda, yesterday I bought a bottle of Pepsi Summer Mix.

Big mistake. Pepsi Summer Mix tastes like someone dropped fruit-flavored Tums into a bottle of Pepsi and let them dissolve. Also, the design of the bottle makes it look like it should have corn in it.

In other news, the sign for the (single) handicapped parking spot in our apartment lot is gone. Like, I went over and looked, and there's a hole in the ground where the signpost used to be. There were people moving out this weekend, and they constantly had their Saturn Vue parked in the handicapped spot (it had handicapped tags). I have a strong suspicion that they took the sign with them, which leads me to wonder -- are they just assholes, or did they have to put it in there because the apartment complex doesn't put in any handicapped parking spots?

Well, the guy who lives next door came over and apologized for the situation a couple weeks ago. And they've at least managed to quiet down most of the time. So I guess they're not that bad.

oh my God, we bought a car. [Jun. 17th, 2007|10:25 am]
We bought a new car yesterday. A 2007 Nissan Versa 1.8S, to be precise. We got a great deal on it, too -- $200 over invoice price. (We went to the guy who sold my company four Nissan Sentras last year.) We're just waiting on it to be delivered, since their only automatic 1.8S hatchbacks were white, and neither of us like white cars.

Pictures are sure to follow.

I hate our neighbors. [Jun. 10th, 2007|05:36 pm]
[music |thump thumpthump thump thump]

Our apartment complex is exceedingly crappy, so people tend to get out of here as soon as possible. None of the other three original tenants that have lived in this building are still here, with the last holdout having moved a couple months ago.

So, a few months ago, some people moved in across the hall from us (we're on the second floor). This was shortly followed by daily periods of loud rap music coming from their apartment, seemingly right up against the wall that connects to ours. It started out as just an annoying THUMP THUMP THUMPTHUMP, but in the past couple weeks, they've decided to make it even louder, so that I can clearly make out the words, in some cases repeatedly involving "motherfucker" and the n-word. (Also, I swear it's the same few songs every time -- I think they only actually own one CD. And I'm not just making a "rap all sounds the same" generalization, I can hear it that clearly and recognize certain parts of the songs.) I tried banging on their door the other day while it was playing, and again today, but they apparently did not hear me. So I finally broke down and called in a noise complaint to the city.

About 15 minutes later, a cop comes up to the apartment, knocks on their door twice (first, they respond by turning down the music, and on the second knock then they actually answer it). I can hear them talk for about ten seconds in the hall (the cop just said to keep it down because there were complaints, nothing at all threatening), and the cop leaves. The couple that live there leave a few minutes later, and I can hear *them* talking as well, speculating on who called the cops. The male says "it was probably the white people", which pissed me off so much that I opened the door and identified myself as the person who did it. Thus followed an idiotic conversation in which I shouldn't have called the cops because the male neighbor "has a history with the police" and that apparently my complaint is irrelevant because nobody else has complained (setting aside the fact that the apartment below them was vacant up to about a week ago, and the guy under us is in the Navy, so he's not home half the time). I tell him that the cops wouldn't be involved if he would just be considerate of the other people in the building. I try to get him to understand that just because the apartment complex says that he can have his music loud until 9 doesn't mean he can have it so loud it disturbs us. I'm trying to be as polite as possible, but I was pretty irritated at this point.

And now they're back and it's actually at the lowest level it's ever been. Wonder how long that will last.

Maybe I'm being an asshole, but I hate it when people are this inconsiderate.

Note to YouTube users: [May. 30th, 2007|06:39 pm]
Nobody cares about your crappy acoustic guitar cover song videos. They want the actual thing.

Also, if you post something you and your friends made described as "funny" or "hilarious", it isn't.

it's still here [Mar. 31st, 2007|05:40 pm]
work. eat. sleep. work. eat. sleep.

I think I'm not going back to school, due to my demanding job which is going to become more demanding soon, but it also involves more money and a company car.

this morning began with me trying to get the oil changed in my car (failure) and ended with us buying an Xbox 360 (success). hooray for untenable financial decisions.
