My policy on f-locked posts...

ETA: I'm moving this to the top of my journal since all my fic is locked now. Those of you who have seen it before may ignore this post.

I've seen people post stuff about their friending policies, but I don't really have one. I do, however, have a policy about posts that are flocked.

So this is how I decide what to lock... )

Con report - Con.txt - while it is fresh in my mind

I suck at names, so if I have forgotten yours, please accept my abject apologies.

That said - Con.txt ROCKED! It was well organized, interesting, fun, lively, stimulating [in many many ways ;-)], and just the best time I've had in over a year.

I suppose you'll want specifics, won't you?

First of all, I had planned to put several things in the art show, but my life imploded the week before the con, and everything was left unfinished. I brought all my stuff with me - paper, glue, needles, thread, davey board, etc. And planned to put the books together at the con. This sort of worked.

:-)

Okay - Thursday, arrived very late, worked on book binding, slept.

Friday - Got up early, went to BWI and picked up my good friend Willing Prey - whom I hadn't seen since BAScon three years ago.

We had breakfast with Seperis and SVmadelyn, which was fun, AND funny! :-) and then went and registered. I went to some panels, hung out in the consweet, talked to folks, and I bound more books.

LOL
You can pretty much rinse and repeat that for Saturday.

Of course Friday night was the party - great dancing, wonderful slide shows of gorgeous guys, and excellent company - not to mention a cash bar.

:-)

When a break was needed from the party noise - panel rooms were open for people to just sit around and chat (and drink)! It was a great night.

Saturday night was the vid show - loads of fun, great vids, and a wonderful audience. Needed more booze ;-> but it was great. The show went for two hours, someone said, and I didn't notice - it felt like five minutes - the vids were that good.

I hope that next time we get a chance to purchase the vid CDs.

The art show was small, but had lots of fun stuff. I especially liked all the 3-D art - of which I did manage to squeeze in some of my books. In fact - I put in a couple of the journals on Saturday late afternoon! LOL but anyway - Tree was very gracious about putting in my stuff late, and it worked out for the best because of the four pieces I put in, TWO went to auction! I actually made enough on the art show to cover my food and parking for the weekend!!!

Whee!

This is why next year you need to try and get stuff in the art show, guys - it can REALLY pay off!

One reason I was able to cover the food so cheaply was because Con.txt REALLY knows how to feed people. Breakfasts lasted me the whole day, and there were always snacks the whole time! It was absolutely the best con to go to on a limited budget.

There were not a lot of dealers there, but the ones who came brought quality stuff, and the swap table and orphan zine table were to DIE for!

I was especially excited to meet up with authors JM Snyder, and Vincent Diamond - authors who came and manned tables with their books for the entire con. They were fun to talk to, had great advice, and brought really hot smutty books for me to buy - Does it get any better? As someone who is trying to get back into fiction writing while burning myself out on non-fiction, I found I got a lot of energy by talking to people who are already building up successes in this area.

Plus - I got autographed erotica! Whee!

This was a fantastic con - and I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL 2010!!!!!

Thanks for the Ethics!

Just a quick note to say that Con.txt was the most awesome fun EVER! And I have to give a big "THANKS" my flist for comments in the previous post on Ethics in SGA.

The panel went really well and we got to talk about a lot of different aspects of ethical questions the show raises.

I'll be posting more about that tonight with my con report, but but for now, all I can say SQUEEEEE! It was the BEST!

Ethics in Pegasus

I will be co-modding with Molly-O at context on a panel about ethics in SGA. So I'm curious - what were the situations/episodes that made you go, Hmmmmmmm. Or perhaps, "WTF?!"

For me, it's all the Michael episodes. There is just so much there to choose from - Carson? What happened to the DOCTOR? And John... Way to treat an ally.

So comment please, and discuss among yourselves - What were your favorite ethical conundrums brought up by the 'Lanteans meeting the top of the Pegasus food chain?

Happy New Year! Hope you had a good Christmas!

Well, the year has turned, and overall, I'm not sad to see it go. I've had some wrenching times this year, but good times, too. I hope that I can skip the crap and keep the good stuff going in '08.

To the good - my Secret Santa sent me a great present! I don't know who it was - but I got one book that I've been wanting a long time Forbidden Friendships: Homesexuality and Male Culture in Renaissance Florence, and another great book I didn't realize I wanted, Marsillo Ficino all about the ideas of magic, philosophy, and religion in Renaissance Italy.

YAY!

So, thank you Santa!

I've outlined about seventeen scenes to add to my urban fantasy that is based on "Alexander and the Mirror." I doubt I will have much time to work on the novel until Summer - the next four months look like they are going to kick my ass - but oh well! Taht is what we live for, right?

Hope you all have had a great holiday!

*hugs*

SQUEE: SGA 4.5, Travellers

I have not been much for fannishness lately - the poor people who have friended me for fic and seen NOTHING new lately know this. Sigh.

BUT.

Last night I took the time and watched SGA - and BWEEEEE!

Here be love for the show, John, and Joe Flannigan's characterization )

Con report to date: Con.TXT

OMG.

So. Much. Fun.

Seriously - best party since the last New York Slumber party. There was dancing in front of two large screens that projected a series of pictures and art from all different fandoms. It was like dancing with my favorite fan crushes! Squeee!

The hotel is very nice. The food is delicious and HEALTHY. The con-space is compact, self-contained, and convenient. The panels so far are well run and really fun and interesting.

So far I've been to panels on "Don't ask, Don't tell" in the military; Dr. Who; Crack!fic; representations of fannishness in TV shows; and Stargate Atlantis: WHY?

The DADT and the military was the most informative panel thus far and gave some good resources for researching the issue in case of doing a fic on it. Stargate Atlantis: WHY? has so far had the most fun discussion, Crack!fic was fun and proved the 25 fans in a room will each give you a different definition of Crack!fic - but we all enjoy it! and the Dr. who panel was fun but I had to put my fingers in my ears for half of it since I haven't seen any of the tenth Doctor series.

Tomorrow I'll be doing my SGA panel - so more then!

The Laptop, she is HERE!

I came home to day to find my laptop waiting for me, having arrived a day early!

How much do I love Federal Express?

Thiiiiiiiis MUCH!

It is shiney and fast, and the icam works and there are lots of new nifty tricks with OS 10.4, and some new software as well.

I am very happy.

In other news, I continue to contemplate the enigma that is John Sheppard. As I talk to friends and read comments and fic, I find that I wonder if we tend to emphasize the broken aspect of John too much? In our search for angst, do we tend to present him without the strength of character and will to survive that is apparent in many canon episodes? Hmm, I shall have to go contemplate further...

Okay, panel schedule for Con.TXT seems to be set - and it looks like we are going to have a mighty fun con!

Whee!

Contacting my co-mods is on my to do list for tomorrow.

Summer vacation is set as well - a week in Florida in August - it's sure to be steaming, but the resort is gorgeous and Baby Girl couldn't be happier - Florida is her idea of Eden. Now we just have to pray for no hurricanes. *crosses fingers and toes*

We also had our first day of summer schedule: TV off at 10:AM and not on again until dinner time (tonight that was 6:30 pm). It was raining so baby Girl couldn't really go out to play, but she read, did some science work on Plants, listened to Harry Potter CDs, and we went swimming once I had finished work. So all in all a good day.

And the laptop update is...
My new baby arrived in Alaska and has left again, winging its way across the continent.

One computer and one convention...

I got the notice today that my new MacBook has left China and is winging its way towards me as we speak! Yay! Fly little laptop, fly! expected delvery is Wednesday afternoon - the day before i go to Con.TXT - and, Yay again!!! that means I'll be online since the new laptop does - of course - have wireless!

It looks like i will indeed be co-moderating two panels - the one on learning to write through fanfic, and another one on SGA, focused on John Sheppard...

Yum.

So, how do we see John, oh F-list?

I generally see him as someone who tries to avoid deep attachments, because he's lost people too often. I don't think he's succeeded in avoiding deep attachments on Atlantis, but I think he manaages to lie to himself about this most of the time. I think he's a great hero and a pretty crap commanding officer - but a good commanding officer would make for a boring show. ;-)

Feel free to discuss in comments, and I'm still looking for recs of your favorite books on writing!

Summer, Summer, Summer - Yay!

Yesterday was the last day of school! wheeeheee! No more school job will hopefully mean a lot more time to be fannish. I was really running on empty by the end. I actually slept NINE HOURS last night.

Whoa.

I now have a few days to finish getting my stuff ready for the art show at Con.TXT. I'm also hoping to do a panel there, and in preparation of that, I have some questions for any writers who feel inclined to contribute to the discussion:

Do you agree or disagree with the idea that there are elements of the writing craft that can't be learned in in writing fanfic?

Do you think that there are elements that are more difficult to learn through fanfic writing rather than other types of writing?

Please discuss in comments!

On a writerly theme, here is a useful list on the SFWA website of the top twenty dishonest literary agents

Also, just for fun, please recommend your favorite book on writing. Mine is, without a doubt, "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg.
