learning to leave a paper trail distro

paper trail distro turns five years old this month! to celebrate, i started making seasonal newsletters to accompany every order. the fall newsletter contains in-depth descriptions of the zines added to the catalogue over the summer, two interviews with zinesters, & some helpful hints & tricks on keeping prices down when making zines. you can give the newsletters to friends when they ask where you get the awesome zines you are reading, you can leave them in coffeeshops, or you can save them forever. i can also send a stack if you want a bunch for your infoshop, library, whatever.

september kept me busy, adding lots of new items to the catalogue, writing descriptions & scanning covers. here's what's new:

* basic paper airplane #2--stories about getting a car again, ghosts of snohomish county, learning about a great-great-grandfather, & more, text-heavy & introspective
* brainscan #23--"travel stories that never went as far as the travel written about," about polish waiters, angry wives of ex-boyfriends, & salt lake city, with a high-contrast cut & paste layout
* "dirty love" #1--very personal & text-heavy zine about learning to love your body, embracing fatness, queerness, & different-ness, with some great drawings & exercises in communication & self-acceptance
* "doctrinal expletives" #3--awesomely sarcastic & political zine addressing intersectionality in feminism & anarchism, critiquing facile sex-positivity, loving rob halford, & a lot more
* "jesus christ superzine" #1--about growing up a fundamentalist christian & eventually leaving the church, but maintaining compassion & respect (& humor) along the way
* "toothworm" #3--what causes an alcohol black-out? will the world end in 2012? does emmalee write erotic poetry? these questions & more are addressed in this zine, accompanied by some crazy drawings
* "truckface" #12--more incredibly funny & touching stories about teaching in the chicago public high schools, & also traveling in new york city & eastern europe; very text-heavy with LB's famous portraits & drawings
* "up the logic punks!" #2--another twenty-five logic puzzles about punks, anarchists, & zinesters, with a five-part whodunit & an answer key
* "your pretty face is going straight to hell" #3--getting ready to live with a long-term boyfriend, a photo essay on body image, trying to get excited about photography again, keeping house & being bored at work, with an exciting cut & paste layout
* "your pretty face is going straight to hell"#4--the "love" theme issue, all about crushes, make-out, loves, "loves," & all the dumb shit we do when we think we like someone

09:38 am - up the logic punks! #2

after a great response to the first issue, i sat down & wrote twenty-five brand-new logic puzzles about zines, punks, & anarchists, & put together "up the logic punks!" #2. for the uninitiated, this link should give you an idea of what the heck a logic puzzle is. the puzzles i wrote for the zine are of the grid variety.

the zine features an introduction for new puzzle enthusiasts, explaining how to solve a puzzle & offering some useful hints & tricks, complete with a sample puzzle & detailed explanation of the solution. there is also an answer key for all the puzzles, so you can check & see if you were right. puzzle topics include punks shoplifting from the liquor store, zine designs that bear a suspicious resemblence to one another, dietary restrictions wreaking havoc on a collective house dinner schedule, 24-hour zine parties, the habits of obnoxious jerks at protest marches, people charging way too much to wholesale their zines, & more! there is even a five-part mystery puzzle (solve the first four puzzles in order to have the necessary information to solve the final puzzle!).

click here to see a sample puzzle )

this zine is $2 anywhere in the world. you can paypal me at learningtoleaveapapertrail@hotmail.com or mail your order to me at:
12 lincoln ave. #3
somerville ma 02145 usa

send $3 & i'll also include a copy of "up the logic punks!" #1! you'll have enough logic puzzles to last for the next few years.

e-mail if you would rather do trade. i might be into that. also get in touch for distro rates & all that good stuff.

i also run learning to leave a paper trail zine distro. you can order this zine from the distro along with all the other awesome stuff i carry (over 130 zines to choose from!). & i will be tabling the distro at the boston zine fair this weekend, if you want to come by & pick up a copy in person!

paper trail distro news
i haven't posted one of these updates in a couple of months. so first, a little intro: paper trail distro has been around since october 2003 (almost five years!). i mostly carry personal zines with a political twist, but that is broadly interpreted. i carry around 150 different zines & have a really simple postage-paid shopping cart system (for u.s. orderers & international both), so ordering is really easy. you can check out the catlogue & everything else at http://www.papertraildistro.com. on to the news!

a few new items have come into stock in recent weeks: "life during wartime" #9 (the newest edition of erin yanke's amazing audio zine, this issue all about a perilous quest to sell a rare velvet underground acetate found at a yard sale), "otaku" #5 (a re-print of jeff miller's last zine before changing the name & launching the "ghost pine" series), "recognition" (a beautiful & intoxicating art zine by molly kalkstein), & "on the lower frequencies: a secret history of the city" (erick lyle's exhaustive history of fighting back against gentrification in san francisco, published by soft skull press). some great stuff should also be arriving shortly, including the newest "keep loving keep fighting," & "the worst," a compilation zine on death, loss, & grief. you can read more detailed descriptions for these & everything else at the website.

ZINE READING WITH ERICK LYLE & CINDY CRABB
tuesday, june 17 7:30pm
lucy parsons center (549 columbus ave., boston)

Erick Lyle of "SCAM" magazine reads from his new book, "On The Lower Frequencies: A Secret History of The City", out now on Soft Skull Press. Lyle looks back at highlights and tactics of the past ten years of activism in a gentrified San Francisco -- including tales of squatted community centers, punk shows in the streets, and protesters shutting down San Francisco when the war started. Cindy Crabb discusses the intersection of anarchism and personal history with stories from her inspiring zine "Doris".

http://www.onthelowerfrequencies.com
http://www.dorisdorisdoris.com

Erick Lyle has been the editor of "SCAM" magazine since 1991 and has been playing in bands and organizing DIY punk shows and protests for just as long. His work has appeared in "Raritan" and the San Francisco Bay "Guardian" and on NPR's "This American Life". Lyle is a former street outreach worker with the Coalition On Homelessness San Francisco and squatter and he lives in downtown San Francisco.

Cindy Crabb has been writing and publishing the autobiographical, political zine "Doris" since 1994. It is a zine about secrets and truth, anarchism and feminism, and the small things that keep us alive. She is the editor of "Support" zine, and is an abuse survivor advocate.

05:09 pm
okay, i lied. one more post. so here's the story: i went to the management company & signed all the paperwork for my amazing new apartment. once everything was taken care of & i was putting my coat back on to leave, the agent told me that i'll have to pay the remainder of my balance (first & last months' rent, key deposit) before i can have the keys (ie, before march 1) & that it has to be paid with a bank check instead of a personal check. oh noes! if i could pay with a personal check, i would have no problems, because my march social security check would be deposited into my account & be ready to access before the personal check to the management company would clear. but i can't get a bank check unless they can verify that i have that much money in my account at the time that they cut the check, you see? this means i need to make some fast moves to get my mitts on some money. the sooner i can come up with the scratch for the bank check, the sooner i can take possession of the apartment.

the bare minimum that i need to raise is $284.40.

here's how you can help: i know this is a complete & total long shot, but just in case i have some big admirer reading this who happens to have some money burning a hole in their pocket...

i left it blank so you can donate $1 or you can donate like $500. whatever. i am not holding my breath for anyone to actually do this, but...just in case you really wanna.

i also need all the distro orders i can possibly get. to actually cover all my basic expenses for the month of february & take possession of this apartment on march 1, i actually need to scrounge up a bare minimum of $1223.40. that is a pretty enormous chunk of change. i mean, i need this much ON TOP of my february check. crazy, huh? i am going to do everything i can to get it: sell plasma, sell my accordion, sell my loft bed, whatever. but distro orders help too, because some of this money is needed to pay zinesters. distro subscriptions would help even more, since postage on them is deferred until april when my finances will be considerably better.

oh. also? if you really decide you want to be a good samaritan & actually donate money to me for no reason, i will totally pay you back somehow. it can be a loan, or i'll paint you a painting, or give you a lifetime subscription to every zine i ever make, or mail you a batch of fresh-baked cookies, or SOMETHING. we'll work it out. & if you have ideas for other ways i can make some bread, let me know.

whoa, the distro is way in the hole this month because i have had to pay about a million zinesters to re-stock zines. (not a million...but literally like thirty people.) if you have been contemplating the possibility of placing an order, this would be a really good time to do it. paper trail distro

don't forget that the winter 2008 paper trail distro subscription closes on december 31! that leaves a little more than a week for any last-minute subscribers. the costs is $30 within the u.s. & $35 elsewhere, & you can go over to the catalogue to subscribe. i still don't want to give away what is in each package (aside from a whole pile of zines, of course), but i will say that i have been sewing like a madwoman, compiling interviews, getting to know my new button maker pretty well, silkscreening, & writing a lot in preparation. each package will contain two brand-new zines that are not otherwise available through the distro (In addition to a bunch of others). these zines will actually never be available through the distro in the form they are taking for the subscribers (if ever). i know everyone is saving their money for holiday travel & gifts, but just in case...

08:37 pm - paper trail distro news
there is only one month left to sign up for the first paper trail distro subscription package! it will contain a selection of fifteen zines (mainly new items that have been added to the catalogue lately, but also one or two made specifically for subscribers), & a bunch of other zine-themed hand-crafted surprises--sewn things, silkscreened things, collaged things, & more!

more details are under the cut )

i also offer postage-paid collections through the distro--$15 for ten zines (postage-paid--even overseas). the collections available are newest additions, hot sellers, & my own personal choices. you can also get more than one collection at a time for an additional discount.

& of course, i generally just have a whole lot of awesome zines available through the distro--well over one hundred to choose from, & all of them are great. i focus on personal zines, often with some kind of radical/d.i.y. component. there's a huge variety: zines on parenting, recipes, crafting, reproductive health, trans issues, bicycles, urban sustainability, sex work, mental health, travel, & more. visit the catalogue at papertraildistro.com & find info on the collections & the subscription program on the main page.

08:40 pm - paper trail distro zine collections
newsflash!
i just dropped the prices on the zine collections i offer. they are now $15 a piece, postage-paid to anywhere in the world. i offer three different collections--

1) newest items into the distro. these are the ten newest zines added to the catalogue. i think all of them have been added within the last month. i have been picking up a LOT of new stuff lately. this is a great collection for people that have been reading zines for a long time & want to read some new stuff.

2) bestsellers. these are the zines that have been flying out of my storage milk crates. this collection is a nice to choice for someone who may be relatively new to zines & not know quite where to begin. obviously these zines are popular reads!

3) my personal choices. this is a collection of zines i happen to like a fair amount & think people should read. some of these may be generally overlooked when people are perusing the catalogue, but they're good stuff!

you can get a combination of two collections for $28 or all three for only $40! thirty zines for $40 is a criminally good deal. see all the details (including exactly what is in each collection at the moment--they are always changing as new items come in or other items go out of stock) over here. (no substitutions!)

05:00 pm - subscribe to paper trail distro!
paper trail distro subscriber program
i have been contemplating the possibility of doing something special for the folks that order zines through the distro for a long time, & finally i came up with the idea of a subscriber program. every three months (in january, april, july, & october), i'll put together a big envelope full of zines & other crafty handmade suprises (pins, patches, posters, postcards, artwork, & other stuff--some designed by myself, & some designed by the zinesters i carry) & send it off to subscribers. there will be about fifteen zines in each package, with an emphasis on new items in the catalogue & zines written by featured interview subjects (a different selection for each season). each package will also include a couple of zines that aren't otherwise available through the distro! i'll hand-pick all the zines that go into each package to tailor it for the individual subscriber, so i'll make sure i'm not mailing you something that you have previously ordered. this means that you can feel free to place regular orders through the distro whenever you want, & the subscription package will be a complete surprise! subscriptions placed between now & december 31 will be mailed in the first week of january 2008. $30 (including postage) within the u.s. & $35 (including postage) elsewhere.

i'm also offering a distro rewards program! for every three orders an individual places for eight zines or more, they will receive a free subscription. i will e-mail orderers to let them know that they have a subscription coming their way whenever they become eligible. if you are wondering where you stand in this process, just drop me a line & i'll check my records & get back to you right away. this means that, for every zine you order, you're closer to free zines & crafty surprises!

i have almost 150 different items to choose from in the paper trail catalogue. simply make your selections (using the geographically-correct shopping cart button) & for every $10 that you spend, i'll choose another zine from the catalogue & include it with your order! spend $10 & get one extra zine. spend $30 & get three! this is a sale for orderers both in the u.s. & internationally, & it will be going on for the entire month of october. i'll do my best to ensure i send you zines you've never ordered from me before. feel free to suggest zines you'd like to receive.

questions or comments? let me know!

11:52 pm - PAPER TRAIL DISTRO HAS A SHOPPING CART!
i just spent six straight hours re-coding my distro site to add a SHOPPING CART! & not just that, but now all prices are postage-paid! ordering from learning to leave a paper trail distro just got about a thousand times easier!

now each item in the catalogue (& there are dozens & dozens to choose from) is followed by two shopping cart icons. the pink & red one is for orders shipping within the united states, & the blue & purple on is for orders shipping internationally (including canada & mexico). simply click the geography-specific icon for the item you wish to procure, & when you're done browsing, go to check-out to pay via paypal. no more adding up weights & figuring out postage costs & trying to remember the paypal fee! everything is already factored in!

(for orders within the u.s.)
(for international orders)

folks who prefer to pay through the mail with cash, checks, or money orders can use the shopping cart as well to tally up their purchases. then you can just print out or re-copy the shopping cart form & throw it in an envelope with your payment. so simple!

in addition, to well over a hundred different zines to choose from, i've also been conducting interviews with zinesters for the past couple of years & about a dozen are up on the site for people to read. go here for a direct link to the three most recent interview, plus links to the rest.

& don't forget that i moved recently. all distro orders & other correspondence (including orders for my zines "love letters to monsters," "up the logic punks!," & "you live for the fight when that's all that you've got") should be sent to: ciara xyerra, 160 hyde park ave. #3, jamaica plain ma 02130.

lastly, i am always accepting new zines for distro consideration. send them to the above address or see here for submission details.

all right, dudes, i moved. new address:

160 hyde park ave. #3
jamaica plain ma 02130

send all mail to this address, because i am completely moved out of my old house & it feels like going over there to pick up mail would be a little uncomfortable. if you have already sent me some kind of mail to the old address, let me know so we can figure out if it will be forwarded or whatever.

jessika rae, your zines still haven't arrived. i'm not sure how to proceed there.

i'm completely moved out of my old house. my new house is on the third & forth floors of a triplex. my new room is really small, but gets tons of light & i am completely unpacked already. i'm painting it pink later today. the kitchen is huge & amazing & i see myself doing lots of cooking there. there's a big deck for smoking or sitting & reading. the fourth floor is almost exclusively a huge living room with a bar & a pool table. the fourth-floor bathroom is huge--literally bigger than my bedroom, with tons of shelves & exposed beams. & my rent is WAY cheaper than at my old house & none of the bills are in my name.

jared was a huge help with the moving process, as were bart & david. we won't have internet at the house until september 10 (i'm at a coffeeshop right now with my laptop), but life just got about 500 times better! no time to reply to prior comments at the moment, but i'll try to get to it tomorrow. all systems are go with zine/distro orders. i'm changing my address on the distro site right now.

07:57 pm - STUFF FOR SALE!
i am selling my ACCORDION. it is in perfect condition, & will come in its case with velvet lining & with two how-to-play-accordion music books simple enough for children or music-impaired adults. it's a red mini hohner piano accordion with 24 bass notes (no minor bass keys). i am selling it because i never play it & i think it's time to find a home for it with someone who will show it more love.

PRICE: $300 (includes postage)
this is an awesome deal. this is less than a new version of the same accordion would cost, & for all intents & purposes, this is a new accordion--with music books for free! there is absolutely nothing wrong with this accordion at all. this is a steal if you have been considering buying an accordion for yourself or a loved one. spread the word!

i am also selling two of those big layered puffy ruffly squaredancing-style cyndi lauper-inspired new wave skirts, if you know what i am talking about.

SKIRT #1 is hot pink & the top layer is made out of a sort of rough-feeling netting material. each ruffle is trimmed in hot pink satin. the under-layer is softer & more comfortable close to the skin. it has a wide satin elastic waistband & would comfortably fit sizes 16 or 18--maybe even bigger. or you can alter it to make it smaller if you want. it's in great condition & i'm just selling it because it's too big for me.

PRICE: $10 (includes postage)
this is also a bargain. it's hard to find skirts like this, & when you do come across one, it's usually in a fancy specialty thrift store & they cost like $25.

SKIRT #2 is white & is made out a slick, durable fabric that is sort of like rayon, maybe, but not. the ruffles are really big & eyelet-style. it is puffier than the pink skirt, & i altered it to make it smaller, so it will fit sizes 10 or 12 pretty well. or you can let it out again & make it bigger, or take it in again & make it smaller. because of the way i altered it, it sort of has a bustle thing happening in the back, which is kind of cool. old ladies have told me that i "look like an angel" when i wear it. it's in really great condition & i'm only getting rid of it because i almost never wear it.

PRICE: $8 (includes postage)
this is also a steal. i made it cheaper than the pink skirt because of the altering, in case you like your used vintage clothes unaltered, you know.

please comment or e-mail to secure your item before sending payment. i accept cash, checks (made out to ciara xyerra) or paypal (learningtoleaveapapertrail@hotmail.com). please buy this stuff! give it a loving home. help me eat this month. tell your friends!
